As a returning STO'er I used to have heaps of fun doing the Academy event. However, when I tried to do them today I was baffled with the outcome: out of the 25 particles I scanned, 24 collapsed and only one gave a combat situation.
I have no idea whether or not this is happening due to a bug or bad RNG on my behalf. But I tried it on a second toon and got similar results (here I scanned 30 particle locations, 28 collapsed, 1 combat and 1 where the particle was successfully collected).
Anyone else having this bad RNG luck on this minigame or am I just the only one? (:

Are they collapsing on the initial scan, or when you have to "stabilize" them?

Keep calm, and continue firing photon torpedoes.
well the initial scan and collapse is random set by the game
but yea it seems the rate of initial collapse has gotten higher past year or so
my record... if i remember right, is about 35 collapses in a row

Keep calm, and continue firing photon torpedoes.
a) it collapses
b) it spawns an NPC to fight
c) it generates a particle that you have to collect.
I'm referring to part (a)
