Game Crashing on Load

Hi all,
This is a problem that my brother is experiencing: once he gets past the loading splash, the music starts to play and the screen goes black; then the whole computer locks up and he has to hard boot it. All that he can see on the screen is the ST version number, the rest is just black?but the music still plays. Anyone know how to fix this? This wasn't a problem until LoR came out.

I should also note: he's using the STO UMV to run the game on his mac mini (2009). More often than not, though, fixes that work on the native client work for the client running under the UMV so I don't know if that matters.
