New Romulan Scientist

So I joined the masses and made a Romulan today. Decided to go with Scientist since I found Tactical too fragile with Fed, and it seemed different enough from my engineer.

I'm pretty knowledgeable on how to properly set a cruiser up, but I have no idea how to skill/equip a Science vessel... and as this is a new faction I don't even really know what ships I should be flying at certain tiers (though for most it seems theres no choice beyond C-Store/Not C-Store).

Any advice or if anyone can link guides to Science builds would be appreciated, as would advice on applying the knowledge to a Romulan ship.

For Rom Ships, sadly the ONLY science ship is a tier 5 and it moves like a Cruiser. The tier 4 is a Cruiser with Eng top...same goes with the C-Store tier 4. Tier 2/3 are both Tac Escorts.

So if you want a science ship until tier 5, you WONT be flying a Rom ship.

Suggestions on what I should fly then? I havn't decided between Fed or Klink yet, but leaning toward Klink. Suggestions on BOFF powers to use? I'm a complete Science noob.

Klingons sadly lack science ships unless you want to use BOP's or buy the Gorn ships. I often on KDF just make do with what I got to T5, probably the best to do the same with a Romulan. Use their ships as you level till T5 and then go all science with your T5 science ship.

It sucks but something KDF players still have to deal with as BOP's are a very poor substitute for a fully fledged science vessel.

Basically, pick whatever ship you want to fly. There's few Science-oriented ships for Romulan characters, but it's really not that big a deal until end-game anyway. Until you're at the point where you're training your Sci Boffs, the ones you get won't be terribly powerful anywyay.

There is not a few, there is only ONE Rom science ship. Hit tier 4 and it flops from Agile Tac/Escort to Slow Eng/Battlecruiser.

    Tier 2/3 Tac/Escort
    Tier 4 Eng/Battlecruiser
    Tier 5 Options

On your way up the Rom line you flop to 3 different set ups and play styles. Really was NOT thought through.

You also get access to some of the ships from your ally. So yes, there's more than one option.

If you're used to flying a cruiser then you should be ok in the Ha'Nom (Romulan Sci ship) as its a cruiser decked out like a Sci ship.

Basically when when playing a science captain you're focus is between supporting your allies through heals and rebuffing the enemy with drains/crowd control. Gravity well is a pretty awesome BOFF ability (nice damage and it pulls enemies into it), transfer shield strength and hazard emitters are your standard heals and there's a host of other good abilities. There are quite a few threads and guides about how to play a science captain so I'm pretty sure you'll find something just remember to search for something like "STO science space guide" and you'll come out on top.

    Hope this was helpful :)

Science can also tank...well some of the science ships, Nebula is incredible for that, Carrier not to the same extent as it lacks turning speed to direct damage to another shield facing. Some Science can DPS, Recon Science...BoPs

I think that's exactly the point - so you don't limit yourself to a single style of play and then go onto the forums to whine about how the game is boring and there's no variation.

Everyone knows that the details don't matter that much until you hit the endgame, so they're using forced ship progression to get you acclimated not only to different styles of ship but also to the idea that an Engineering/Tac/Sci captain can make any ship class effective. If I had a Master Key for everytime I've seen someone insist in forums or chat that just because he/she's a Tac they MUST be in an Escort, I'd have enough keys to buy a Lobi ship.

Of course there's the specter of the store, too. If you absolutely hate flying a slow ship for the week or so it'll take you to level out of the tier, you can probably buy a different one from the store.

Because of the alliance you don't need to force Roms to have a Cruiser/Sci/Escort choice at every tier. You have a warbird, and you have the rest.
