It all depends on what you like. Some weekends, I spend more time on my KDF than my Fed. Then another weekend, its the Feds turn. It all depends on the mood I'm in or what I need to do on the game.
When the Romulan joins my line up. That will be even more different. Since I have 3 factions to play with.

Hahaha, the Federation is full of hypocrisy and self-interest. . .especially in STO. They spread throughout space like an insidious, passive-aggressive parasite. They become 'friends' with you, sap you of your strength and independence, and then absorb you. Just look at the Cardassians. Look at the Romulan petaQ'pu who follow D'tan. They all reek of Federation weakness, of Federation 'morality'.
When the Klingon Empire acted in response to the Undine threat, the Federation cowards backed down and refused to support their allies. They only want allies so that their weak behinds can be saved from rapacious invaders.
I think it's that "morality" word that you're allergic to. You're going out of your way to find everything, anything, that can punch holes in it, so you can stand triumphant over it and wring your hands.
I never quite got the logic of "this society has some problems with it and some corruption, so let's go totally the other way and stab each other back and forth!"
I had no idea how much some KDF players sound like Reddit hipsters. Ugh. "The Klingons are being honest with themselves" is code-language for "waaah these guys tell me what to do but they fell short of their standards this one time!" Besides, how often does the KDF fall short of its own claims of honor? Lots. You're just going for the easier path that won't "judge" you. Please.
Oh, this same problem is in Old Republic: tons of Sith Empire guys like to claim they are the "good guys" because "at least we're honest with ourselves hurr durr Republic did a bad thing over here".
Meh. For some its mechanical reasons, since the game practically bribes you to try and give the KDF some numbers. Of course for some there's just that urge to pick fights with people, be loud and belligerant, or just be that kind of 'rugged individualist' who loves to taunt the sheeple (and obsess about root beer as if they were insightful) just like all the other Hot Topic rebels.
Or people can just do what they like, and quietly steer clear of the rest.

The "rugged individualists" that are rampant in Internet culture these days wouldn't do very well in the Klingon Empire. There really isn't much room for a warrior who can't obey his superiors or the dictates of his house, and falling short of expectations is often a death sentence.
They can "go Galt" all they like but in the KDF they're bound for disappointment, if the Klingon Empire was a real thing.
Oh, and the "root beer" thing is borrowed from Quark. That's what these "individualists" do: they borrow heavily from other people, and indeed from society, and pretend no one helped them, ever.
Eh, some people like to play the villains...to each their own mate.
You may want to pay attention with the kind of stuff the "Heroic" Federation has you doing in those questlines.
I mean, Starfleet sends you to a Romulan base to kill a bunch of doctors and researchers who had nothing to do with any threat to the Federation (i.e. innocent). And even after discovering that the Starfleet Admiral that sent you there is an Undine, the Federation proceeds to send you to Romulus provoking the Romulans into combat. When the Romulan garrison tells you to leave (Fed & Romulans are not at war, remember), you insist on staying and force the Romulans to fight you.
And on top of all this, after it became blatantly clear that a high ranking Admiral in Starfleet was in fact an Undine infiltrator, the Federation does absolutely NOTHING in alarm. They are not shocked that infiltrators with changeling aspects have *again* gotten into the highest ranks of the military. They do... nothing.
At least the Klingons detected the Undine infiltration, and are the ONLY major power of the quadrant that has the balls to do something about it. Drastic, yes, but the Klingons are not ignoring the dire threat of external threats permeating the government and military, and most of all, not letting it "take over" others. The Federation did not like this of course, and dissolved the alliance. Maybe those Undine infiltrators that the Feds pretend not to exist that run the Federation had something to do with that... What better way to fragment the powerful Post-Dominion War alliance between the Federation and Klingon Empire by fragmenting them and actually making them go to war.

The KDF has a comparable level of corruption, incompetence, treachery, and hypocrisy regarding its "honor" codes in STO's story, and for that matter, in the Trek universe at large.
You're just upset that the Federation (in spite of its faults) at least TRIES to do something beyond the grimdark silliness you seem so preoccupied with.
I RP as a successful S31 agent. I say successful because I've got full Diplomatic commendations, a small flotilla of cloaking ships, more agents (characters) in foreign factions than Federation, and is welcome wherever I go in this galaxy. I don't wear the black uniform because I'm not an angst-ridden teenager with a point to disprove, unlike Drake. No one is gunning for my head. And most of all, I didn't get captured by some stupid Klingon.
I always tell people I'm Section 31 straight off the bat, and people laugh at it as though it were a joke.
Like I said, I'm successful.
Likewise, I'm extending my tendrils to both KDF and Fed, with an old Vulcan with Romulan origins Boff recreated as a Fedrom toon, and calling on Tal Shiar favors to infiltrate the KDF, bringing with her singularity powers combined with judicious application of contraband technologies.
So no, you're not weird. You can't get weirder than me.
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
Granted the Fed and KDF is nothing like their counterparts on shows and movies. The Feds would never act the way they do. And the Klingons as well on this game.
I read the story, but when it gets stupid. I do a quick skim past that part. Since there is a lot of things that is just stupid on how they really act. But its a game and I have fun playing it. However even the shows and movies has their "stupid" parts. So you just have to ignore it. Way I look at it.

Within the last month, I found myself playing a lot more on KDF over my Fed (which essentially become my alt) - and I am wondering why that's the case.
What I like about Fed:
-customization options on characters and ships
-More selection of ships should I choose to buy
-familiar ships
What I like about KDF:
-Better carrier play - I always been playing Pet Master / mobile nukes, be it STO, CO, or any other games that give me options for usign pets. Also allow me to have carrier for free.
-Better DoFF assignments, especially Marauding
-Better fleet - the Fed Fleet I joined seems to grow stale even though it suppose to be a division of a bigger fleet, not to mention not letting me use the fleet bank. The KDF fleet I join is growing, even if slowly, and let me use fleet banks.
So what I want to know is: am I abnormal, or is KDF actually better than Fed? I am trying to find a reason to make a Fed-Rom, but it seems KDF-Rom will be better...

Yes, but I think here the question should read "Is someone weird or abnormal because he prefers ketchup or mayo on gagh rather than on fries?"
No, I do not think it wierd at all.
