I like seeing aliens using a variety of outfit pieces. Tal, Ask'kaar, Selopanaes Palam rey (sp?) (player made races) All have been unique in their own way.
Creating really unique aliens is one of my favorite things to do in the foundry, you could even give them tails.

Oh, while the import/export costume feature is currently disabled, the plan is to re-enable it once the bugs with that system can be hammered out.
As always, please be patient. Things move slowly but they do move.
I hope he is right and I hope more costume options get unlocked while they are at it. In the meantime lets hope they don't pull mission publishing since that has a game breaking bug too.

I'm not feeling too optimistic about this but if all they have to do is remove the few costumes that crash the foundry when imported then it shouldn't be too too long.

Well, I've pretty much managed to import the costumes I will need for my next mission or two. Hopefully that will be enough to tide me through until the feature is back in again.
Considering how busy I have been lately, it probably will.
Then again, considering the speed things are added to the Foundry, it probably won't.

I've done the same thing before the update. I agree, let's hope it will last until the feature is reinstated... if it is ever done at all.

Is it possible to duplicate missions in the foundry? If so I could use that to reuse recurring characters. Just duplicate a mission andd change the maps and dialog etc.

You can, but the problem is I am always at the 50 costume limit. As a result, I have to choose which characters to include for each mission. If a character isn't used then I'll most likely delete that costume and replace with another. The only trouble is when I make a new mission, the mix of characters probably won't be exactly the same. So, there are at least a couple of characters I still have to import, and manually matching the sliders to screenshots which is just a pain compared to the easy costume import function. But, I've done it many times in the past, so I can probably do it again.
I had never known about this tool at all nor used it, but now that you explain what it can do, I vehemently oppose its permanent removal! I am writing a planned 40 episode series as (at this time) an unofficial season 2 to a friend and colleague's 40 episode series called: Starfleet Odyssey! As such, I must rely upon this tool to import his characters into my story (I have not published the first episode yet)! Otherwise, he must take the time to see the slider settings on each and every one of his characters and tell me the settings so I may use them! Very, VERY time-consuming and tedious process that I do NOT want to ask him to do! This is sampa4, and I approve of this petition!
I can't remember exactly what the button is called without being able to access the Foundry. But down in the lower left corner there is a button that says something like importable projects, or something along those lines. When you click it, you then can select an already existing mission and then it will import it into a new mission. However, it has some bugs, like not all costumes copy over (or they didn't used to anyway), every 5th or so costume gets lost.
that's very bad news if they wil disable this feature...please, please, please cryptic, let the costume import stay in the foundry!!!
as i used this often, a removing will destroy all of my foundry projects, and unfortunately i won't be able to develop the sequels of my already released missions.
really, buggy or not, let this feature stay in the foundry!
a tool with bugs is always better then no tool. while using it myself, i had never get a bug with it, so i can't believe it's so bad that it must be removed. and otherwise, there are 1000 bugs in game where you don't care about to fix them, but at this single and unimportant you care, cryptic???

Oh... well, that sucks.
Before Season 8, I had all of my costumes copied over to a blank mission, to be re-imported in case a sequel is made. This way, I get to keep all of the character costumes used in the series.
I guess I can only hope and pray that the bug doesn't affect me. :P

Well, that bug was from a long time ago, so it's possible it has been fixed. However, based on past experience I'd put the odds at no better than 50/50.
I believe the short version is that the feature had a nasty bug in it that needed to be fixed. search around for more information. They will eventually bring it back when they have fixed the bug.
It was something that authors could easily (in most circumstances) work around, however, and I fear that the return of this completely invaluable feature will remain on the back burner indefinitely.
I hope they do bring it back. It was really useful when making fleet missions or any mission the same characters in it. The only time the bug surfaced was you tried to upload any file with z-store purchases or ship that were not in the foundry. I think that a lot of people were able to work around that. I have about 25 screenshots of fleet members just waiting to be uploaded into a fleet welcome mission. It looks like it will a awhile until I get them in there if I have to render them by eye. Oh well.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Check out "Welcome to the 77th" in the foundry!!!!
I think honestly it was because it was crashing the game left and right. They don't want to keep things in that crash the game if they can help it.
i rather prefer if they fix bugs that are much more disturbing. this tool maybe caused some crashes, but it was no problem not to do things with it that crashes the foundry. and if they think it's so necessary to fix it, the should fix it without removing it...
it's always interesting...some bugs they are very motivated to fix - bugs that aren't disturbing much. and other bugs they ignore completely - bugs that are disturbing much.
loosing this tool is not as bad as the new rating system and the limited numbers of missions at the list ingame, but it truly was one of my favourite tools at the foundry. at the current state of the foundry i'm already thinking about giving up on creating new missions, really horrible what cryptic has done here...
It's not a matter of what they WANT to fix, but what is quick and easy to fix....
if that is the matter, the costume import would alrealdy be back. that tool has nothing comlicated to do, it's not much more than reading a few variables from a file and copy them into a costume at the foundry...
i remember some posts at a spotlight mission at the news site, where one user wrote something like "i hope the don't break it like the last mission" . after that, branflakes wrote that they have testet this mission twice BEFORE spotlighting and never ran into issues players reported.
so what does this say to me? it says that they not even care enough about bugs that they know where these bugs are...otherwise they would know these mentioned bugs are mainly happening AFTER spotlighting a mission.
Truthfully... we don't know the specific reason why they felt the need to remove the costume importer. thus we can't even make a reliable guess as to how long it will take to fix the issue.

i don't think like you. it's like i've said before, what that tool has to do is very simple. read variables from a file and copy them into a costume at the foundry. if you want to see it, open a costume file with a hex editor, then you will see these variables. it's really no big thing to program something to read a variable at a specific adress of a file...i've done something like that just two or three months after i learned programming the first time
and i have to say it took only a few hours to programm that for a few variables...maybe it take a bit longer when more variables are needed, but it's truly no thing that needs much time to realize.
so my guess is more that cryptic don't want us to use this tool than they want fix bugs.

Why did you take away the feature in the foundry to upload costumes?
It was a great feature to have in that it would cut down on time creating toon for my missions.
What is it going to take to get that back in there?
Bring it back!!!!!!!!
