You do have a choice to not ally yourself with any other side simply by not progressing the story past the choice. the game will get very boring though very fast as you will have no DOFF's to mess with, and will be unable to partake of endgame STF's etc. No lockboxes will be openable either.
i'd like to see a choose of not having to choose allegiance to the feds/kdf
They need to fix it in a spot where it says Allegiance, but it's picking an Ally. Whether you choose to view yourself as the equal, lesser, or greater in that alliance is up to you...
The only problem I have with it is that it constantly refers to your character as a Starfleet officer or a Klingon warrior, depending on who you chose. I really with they would update the text to be applicable for a Romulan.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
No offense intended but this is only your opinion that the game will get boring. Personally I've been a casual player since the games closed beta and I have never gotten "bored". I've got 13 characters of various levels with more planned for LoR.
I don't use Doffs. Took one look at the system and decided I don't need it.
I don't do STF's, and I don't need the gear from them to enjoy the game.
When a character hits level 50 it gets retired because to me endgame is a mindless grind. I'm here for the journey.
I've never bothered with lockboxes either because I'm not interested in buying gamble boxes and my fleet has a surplus of lockbox ships in the fleet bank which I can snag on one of my 50's or buy the ship off the exchange and toss the reward pack into my account bank where any character the right level can use them.
So I'm looking forward to the challenge of making at least 1 non aligned Romulan. It'll take me back to when I was leveling up my Old School Klinks that unlocked at level 6 and had no content to play.
Considering you can't leave Tau Dewa until after you finish the "choose your side" EP, you're going to be very, very bored.

Sadly, Cryptic decided that's not allowed.

NO ONE wants to ally.
The longer you play, the more evident it becomes that the "alignment" serves no actual or pratical purpose.
About all it does is change which pop ups you get if you do the 40+ content.
It serves no actual purpose and is fairly pointless.
The few things it does do are mainly short cuts for the devs which they could fix in few weeks anyway.
As player there is no reason its necessary.
Its simply dev laziness.
