I had not seen these before - though evidently they are not new. (Oh well)
What a great "Oh TRIBBLE!" moment for me as a player, RA or not - my cruiser is not particularly DPS-optimized, so the commander and captain ships and I were in a fight for our lives.
LOL, back in the day you could lvl a toon to cap via just doing Deep Space Encounters in about a day. Scimitars were always the bane of lvling, because they just don't die (that and every now and again you would get Mirror Fed DSE mission instead of the Romulan/Reman ones).

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
DSE, always had Leader/Boss groups that pop up after the DSE completes one round. The Scimitar pops for those in certain sectors. I don't see the "Kill so many groups" in DSE anymore, after that ends, near the spawn.
There use to also be achievements for killing the Flag ships so and so many times, I think like 10 or so.

Dunno what kicks them off, but I've splashed a couple - showed up as the 'boss' after destroying X of X squads. Scimitar, with two/three D'deridex, four/five Mogai... Don't seem to have seen as many since the DSE changes, but I haven't been doing as many DSEs so - YMMV

Besides leveling, there use to be accolades that gave you Damage bonuses to NPC species so I spend a lot of time in DSE with the leveling and then farming those.

They should make an all Scimitar DSE just for laughs. Make it like the Enterprise Incident, they don't appear until you reach a certain point, then they all decloak surrounding you.

No, you don't need to be in a team. Actually now that I think about it, there are 2 Scimitar groups per instance, one before the DSE objective starts and the Flagship group after. Same as hunting the carrier in SB24 (wonder how many know about that).

Which SB24 carrier? The one that trolls out behind the starbase during the event, or the named one that spawns after the event ends?
The first nameless one is easy enough to pop, but the named one is not only stronger, but you only have the limited amount of time until you are forced to warp out after the event's conclusion to fly out to it and take it out. Really tough.
As I said, 2 carriers. There is also a second Scimitar before the DSE starts that goes away once the DSE begins, but it doesn't count towards anything, unlike the Flagship (or named ship).

Could you give me some general idea on where on the map they are?

I remember there being a Flagship, but I don't remember it being a Jupiter Dreadnought. The DSE mission for Mirror was bugged, along with another species, so I didn't play that one to much.

One of my fondest memories playing this game was with my old KDF fleet. I was helping to train up two rookies and we went into a patrol instance (I think "Patrol the Kahless Expanse") and bam - there was a Scimitar next to a D'Deridex waiting for us. I was in my Vor'cha retrofit (this was before I bought my Bortasqu'.) The others were in a stock T4 Vor'cha and a Qin Raptor (the guy had just hit level 40.) The guy in the Qin types "Oh, God, we're gonna die!!"
Well, long story short we had a great epic battle with me soaking damage and holding agro and basically tanking like a tank is supposed to (and dishing out pain with my DBB/hargh'peng build) and the other two zipping in and out and wearing those monsters down. The Qin popped a couple of times early on but then he figured out when to back off to cloak and heal and I taught him how to avoid the TB. It was the first time either of them had ever seen a D'Deridex before, let alone a Scimitar.
We're all in different fleets now but we still hook up for PvP and STFs. But there's definitely something magical about that first time you face a monster you don't think you can beat, and you somehow manage to take it down.
...Oh, baby, you know, I've really got to leave you / Oh, I can hear it callin 'me / I said don't you hear it callin' me the way it used to do?...

What Cryptic should consider before releasing anything.
