I'm kind of aiming this at a dev. I've heard a while back that you guys were planing a revamp of the crafting system. Is Neverwinter's system a general idea of what you have in mind?
Many moons ago there was rumour of crafting specialisations however they never made it, if they were true that is.
I crafter all gear while levelling, now I only do it for kits as they are decent and no need for dilithium, the only thing using dilithium that I did craft was the aegis set but that was many moons ago. That to me is one of the problems of crafting now, with all the other dilithium sinks in the game crafting just doesn't cut it anymore especially for what it makes compared to what you can get elsewhere. Why waste it on the aegis set or consoles when you can get better elsewhere in the game either for free or part of the rep systems.
Unfortunately it does seem to be the forgotten thing in the game.
i asume it will be completely integrated into the DOFF system...which would make sense to me.
Looking at how it is done in neverwinter, i wouldn't be surprised if we see something like that in STO too.
Interviews said they were getting pressured to fix crafting, you can bet you'll have a rep style crafting xp system, and you'll not be grandfathered if you have crafting xp now.
I'm sure in S9 that is what is coming. Pretty sure we'll be crafting dilithium beam arrays, dilithium armour..
My biggest concern is that they'll turn it into the sorta-TRIBBLE that the reputation system is, a system that requires EACH char to grind it to benefit from it. Right now I have 1 crafter each in fed and Klink sides, born under the original crafting system. I have no desire to grind up any of my other chars, other than perhaps a Rommie, if they have unique blueprints.
It was bad enough that they adding common/uncommon non-replicator stuff which costs dilithium, it'd be worse if they decide to make it as 'fun' as the reputation system.
As it stands tho, there are many potentials for crafting, but will never be implemented because they like their dilithium-for-everything model.
My fear for the reputation like thing is triggered a bit more when you have Defera crafting quests (you know the ones that require the 3 types of crafting mats, and reward you with...more mats). I am wary of the idea that any char that wants to benefit from crafting will have to do it each char, which also means you can't really share pools of crafting mats anymore, since each char would need to collect for their own tasks, rather than having 1 crafting char doing all the building.
Personally, I just hope they'll do something to make crafting worth it. Off Defera with its specialised crafting recipes, I can think of only four things I've bothered crafting at Memory Alpha or Qo'nos.
My combat pet Horta, Large Hypos, Large Shield Charges and occasionally Nanoenergy Cells.
There's just no point to crafting anything, really, since you can get better equipment just from drops and mission awards by playing the game - and unless you're crafting like a fanatic and grinding dilithium for Unreplicatibles and nothing but, by the time you've got the Crafting Skill and materials to even craft the Aegis Space Set, you've already probably got the Jem'Hadar or Breen space sets...

^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...
Scarlet didn't say ridiculous. She said rediculous. Completely different word. I'm not even sure what it means since I can't find it in the dictionary.
I agree with the idea of a Crafting Revamp. But I don't think it needs major change (again). What I have noticed is that there are always Data Samples that are worthless. And its because each tier of gear requires the same type of data for all the different types of one weapon. I feel this should be changed so that each type of, say, Beam Arrays (just for example) should require different types of Data Samples. That way you aren't stuck not being able to make any Beam Arrays because you used up that type of Data Sample making Torpedo Launchers. You just have to make a different type of Beam Array then you might have wanted... (I hope I phrased that in a coherent way... Am just a bit tired)

Are you kidding, who DOES'NT love the Reputation System!? When devs said "The number of Elite STF runs needed to get a Mk XII gear set has been reduced by 60 percent" [from Season 6], how is that not better and more fun than randomly getting free gear? I mean you barely had to earn it before. Plus, those free MK XII vr weapons of your choice always had a [Borg] proc, meaning they were junk. Now I can just skip those and go straight to the fleet weapons! Which brings me to my next point, after refining up to 8k dilithium per day on a character, I often found myself saying "Gee, I wish I had something to use this for." and now I can! Even if a 1/2 day of STFs netted me a full set (more or less) of MK XII ship gear in S6, this is CLEARLY more fun and "easier", because it is "fair" now. I really enjoyed the weeks of leveling the Rep to earn the privledge to spend dilithium and 750marks per set piece to get EXACTLY the part I wanted, not a bunch of free random deflectors/weapons/shields when all I wanted was a specific engine. I mean it's not like we have a wide variety of ships to equip. [-_-]

Here's the best idea really. It would make it "easier" to get what you needed & would solve the problem of "random" data sample drops. Why not integrate it into the REP SYSTEM! It already has one in place of sort with the skill level. But this way you could donate those "craftinig points" to projects that unlock tiers which eventually lead you to a point where you could craft say, Aegis or Antiproton. Then they could just drop the unreplicatable materials (and give a conversion box of say 1 point per common, 100 per uncommon, or something) and just cut straight to the dilithium. It's rather embarassing that one can purchase them now and sell them. I mean the buyer can just craft stuff using ec and it's not even a reward! A requirement for say an Aegis shield could be something like 10,000 points/35,000 dilithium/500 contraband [since it's an outside company that developed them]/& 5 purple Fabrication Engineer DoFFs. (Only once you hit Tier 5 OFC) And naturally these should be bound to character. This would be a fun idea to make crafting better and fairer all!

So realistically, you only need to have the exact number of doffs that you need. ~leadme2kirk
They should just make it like Enchanting in other MMO's. Using materials to add an extra stat or a proc to weapons, armor and consoles.
That would be one thing I'd like to see added. To actually make crafting worthwhile though any crafting revamp should allow the player to custom build gear (i.e choose the rarity level, type, and mods of the item). One of the major flaws with the two previous systems is the generally horrible itemization of the items you can craft. One of the other major flaws is not being able to craft max level mark gear (currently Mk XII).
Any crafting revamp done will have some kind of additional monetization hook I'm sure.

I heard this second hand, so take it for what it is.
So NOT according to DStahl.
According to your source.

I'm going to take the bet against this because ... that's rediculous.

They "abandon" for the latest bestest thing.
Examples: Crafting, Exchange.

Who cares if anything works as long as I get a new Zen ship to buy ever month with an exciting new look and a fancy console!?
