In the last few days since its launch (its not Beta, no character wipes plus full-blown cash shop) I have been playing Neverwinter. You can tell that STO was Neverwinter's prototype in terms of game play, UI, and other systems. However, if you have played other PWE titles, you will see that Neverwinter is the melding of what we know from Cryptic's games and PWE's micro-managing model.
You are bombarded with little zen and Astral Diamonds (Neverwinter's Dilithium) buttons to the point, you are asking yourself, why is there a gold, silver, and copper currency? Its even in the professions (DOFF) missions. AD is much more of presence than dilithium is to the point its the currency of the Auction House. Does mean you can get more? Yes, but it also means prices are much more expensive.
It is at the point, that there are tutorial missions that send you to the auction house and how to use zen. If you think the price of zen is high here, it was at 499 yesterday afternoon, granted it may drop down, but I don't see it going below 430.
I am worried that the new expansion will monetized STO even more to bring it inline with other PWE titles. There is no subscription or life time member option so the players are f2pers despite the fact you can drop 200 bucks for a bunch of mostly cosmetic items, at least with the legacy pack, you get c-store level ships. That's one of the best things about STO, I love, you can pretty much play the game without even knowing about zen or the cstore, yet I believe the majority of STO's players do put a little down for keys or a ship or something, some may boast of never spending a penny, but they are in the minority.
I, for one, hope STO gets better with the new expansion or at least keep Neverwinter's model away from us. There are some things I love about Neverwinter like the sparkling path to help out new players and the ability to change costumes in the character screen and the best is the new leveling help list feature.
STO is a dual system model, f2p and subs, for the ystem of NW to work they need to remove subs entirely which is unlikely. It was designed with a cash shop in the first place, so going this way was not too much of a leap.
However NW is designed to be the way it is from the ground up, to try and bring that system here would cause more problems than it would solve. In much the same way Diablo III was designed with real world currency usage from the beginning whereas WoW wasn't and there was some worry about that system coming into WoW and some even wanted it there too though it never happened as they knew the trouble it would cause.

STO started at 500 and has gone as low as around 80. No one would have predicted that.
dont try and predict what will happen after a couple of days.
You said it yourself, it has a significantly different financial model. NO subs. NO lifetimers. STILL free. STILL possible to get zen from ingame currency.
I don't think we'll see too many changes to STO, although I feel some could work well. For example, paying dilithium to have doff missions end quicker would be a nice option to have.
p.s. I do find it funny that NW doesn't have STO's switch character without logout UI option. LOL
From having tested on Tribble.. I think the only possible point to stand on for your concern might the variety of ships for Romulans and having to pay to be able enjoy a specific playstyle.
There is only a single level 40 freebie ship Romulans (currently) have access to, the Ha'apax. It's a very flexible ship that can do a little bit of everything, but it's still a big, cumbersome beast that cannot specialize in some roles. If you like a specific style of ship, you're going to have to get a retrofit through the C-store.
Additionally, you may have access to your ally's ships, but you do not (currently) get a free ship token for them. If you want a RSV or a Vo'quv carrier, it's going to cost you 120k dilithium.. or a mirror version.
Other than that, everything has pretty much been status quo. Singularity powers don't require Dilithium to use (yet) or anything silly like that.

You think it hasn't already happened?
Try to calculate the cost of the single-claim Ferengi Shuttle.
For those who can't do the math: Assume the minimum (average) of 4 Lobi crystals per lockbox. That means you need at most 200 lockboxes to get enough for the single-claim Lobi ships. Each lockbox costs one key, at 125 zen each. 200 keys equals 25,000 zen if you buy singles, or 22,500 zen if you buy the 10-packs.
I know you can get keys by buying them off the exchange for EC or grinding dilithium to get zen, but keep this in mind: someone has to buy the zen to put them up on the dilithium exchange. Apart from the miniscule stipends and the massively bugged "Free Zen" offers, there is no other source for them than with someone's money.
Conclusion: Every Lobi ship you see flying around is worth $225 to $250.
The price could be easily explained by people with Founder's Packs converting their Astral Diamonds bonus to Zen. Having 2 million AD and 600,000 AD at the start can make them do crazy things like sell astral diamonds for 400 AD per zen.

It's probably going to stay pretty high over there, regardless. With a 24k refining cap and the elite AD vendor gear priced into the millions, it's pretty clear that they never want to see an astral diamond gain anywhere near the Zen purchase power of STO dilithium.
