I just recently started a subscription and a few questions

I have been playing for free since around the beginning of Jan, 2012 and the other day I decided I love STO so much that I wanted to sub to it. Now I am a gold member and I am wondering about a few things...

1) I keep hearing about how subscribers get something called retrofits, when do I get these and how does that work? I see ships listed for sale that say they are retrofits do I need to buy those ships?

2) How come on my launcher it does not say anything to show that I am now a subscriber to the game? I think there should be some indication that my subscription has started and maybe even a little thank you gift (nothing game breaking, perhaps a follower pet) that I get in the mail in game for entering into a subscription.

3) I seem to have gained one character slot with my subscription as I can now have 2 federation characters and one Klingon, if I purchase the new Romulan addition do I get another character slot with it?

    1: Subs don't get Retrofits. If you Subscribe for 600 days you get a T5 ship Vet Reward token that allows you to pick a single T5 RA Galaxy R, Intrepid R, or Defiant R per Fed character. Beyond that Subscribers, just like free players, must buy special ships from the C-Store.

    2: The Launcher does not care if you are a Silver or Gold. The benefits come from what the characters gain, not from what the Launcher states. :)

    3: First, the Rom Expansion is free. There's nothing to purchase. The Legacy and Starter Packs are just C-Store bundles you can buy at a pre-order discount. You do not need them to play a Romulan next month. As far as character slots, Cryptic hasn't released any information as to whether or not a free Character Slot will be given for Roms. That information will be in an upcoming blog.
    STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

    Quick word of advice:

    Either sub for one month ONLY to get the bonuses or buy an LTS. All other options are probably going to cost you more money for the same benefits in the end, plus LTS gets extra stuff. :P

    ( I was gold over 600 days and regret not buying LTS and there is no recoup for that cash )

    Yes, thank you I already figured this out though I am not sure at this point I want to spend the cash for an LTS so probably just cancel before the month is up. One other question...

    Does my sub come with a free month like most MMO's or is that just part of the free to play option already there? Do I need to cancel before the first month is up or is first month free then my payment starts?

    I know nothing of a free month, since this is a F2P model, the whole game is essentially free. Just cancel before the month is up.

    You should get an extra character slot when the Legacy of Romulus is released in May. I believe Branflakes or Gecko confirmed this. Might have been somewhere in a 4 hour long podcast.

    You will also get a free retrait token per character as they are messing around with the trait system. It will only be given to characters already created when LoR comes, not new ones created after that. It will only change your traits not your skills or anything else.
