I've said this twice as a reply but I think this needs its own thread. I want to know who else thinks that there should be an option to play offline single player or with a friend at home.

Well an offline mode would make absolutely no sence in the fassion I run STO but I could certainly understand your desire during long maintenance times or yesterday when the server suddenly shuts down.

Problem here is just that your actions permanently interact with the world u play in and would have to be kept in sync globally to make any sense.

Or do you and your friend have any strategy to build a star base just the two of you? :o

That would be absolutely the coolest thing ever.

From a technical point of view, i can't imagine a offline/singleplayer STO game would need huge amounts of memory, since the game doesn't have a game world that needs to track events or spawn NPCs. It's more or less a collection of individual maps.

I'm beginning to think you're right. :) The huge memory requirements would, for the most part, be due to Multiple Players being Massively Online (wicked login server + memory needed), plus a great many map instances running concurrently. If you were to host an STO server at home, though, just for single-person use, you'd really only need 1 map active (and maybe a few adjacent ones in cache), with virtually no login overhead. Could work. :)

Who knows, if Cryptic ever pulls the plug, they'll make the server software available to all. :D

If that would become reality, they certainly could release a Foundry-like tool to edit the normal game maps, like ESD or any other aspect of the game.
People could create a massive amount of mods, i bet there would be some brilliant people who make awesome Mods for that gameworld. (and surely some who make crappy ones and nonsense as everywhere, but that's a normal thing)

Like in TES games (offline) you could choose what mod to install and change the gameworld significantly to your like. There could be mods that change the game into TOS, TNG, DS9 or appearance or continue Cryptics timeline, to start with.
New ship models and the possibility to change ships stats would be awesome also. The list is endless.

That would be an awesome game!

It might be theoretically interesting to know how many people would like this, but it is a bit pointless, since it will never happen. The entire game is build around a server/client structure.

It would be nice if we could download the episodes and play them offline then have our character be resynced when we log back in again.

But I suppose that a) that isn't doable for technological reasons and b) they wouldn't want to encourage people to play the game in a way that makes it look like less people are logged on and they can't track how much time people are playing in game.

Is there any MMO the developers made possible to play offline after they pulled the plug?
    Any examples?

theres not a lot more I can add then what I have said other then this.

I happened to log into tribble once when the main server was down and found I was the only player on the server at that time, I only logged in for something to do while the server was out.

there was no one to talk to, no one to play with, and nothing I could do there that would have any effect on my character on the main server, if I gained any points, dil, items, ec, xp or whatever nothing would be added to my actual character on the main server.

I thought about this for a second and promptly logged out.

I just cant see the sense in doing anything in sto offline that does not effect my actual character in some way or other, that's 90% enjoyment in online gaming the other 10% is the enjoyment of interacting with others.
take this away and theres 0% enjoyment for me, sto just does not work as an off line game it just felt dark and quiet and lonely and pointless being alone on tribble and a offline version would be the same.

if that's what you want in a game you can keep it.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

This is about when the plug of the online game has already pulled.
There would be no more online character to play with. No Star Trek online anymore, only the offline game. Even for MMO players that love the game, this would be better than nothing.

Not everyone on the planet is a die hard MMO player. Especially in STO i have noticed that many people play it only because it is a Star Trek game but don't care much about the Multiplayer aspect. I must say i am one of them.
I would be much more pleased with this game if it where a singleplayer offline game which would support mods.

Pretty impressive. This thread got more posts after it 'died' than it got the first time around.

But, you know what happens when you let zombies go. Let one zombie escape and pretty soon you've got more of them running around.
