I am not keen on simply scraping shield balancing. It could be a good thing, but I fear an awfull lot more rebalancing work would have to be done to compensate for this change then would be necessary if we went with the 'more shield balancing' rather then less approach.
Hear is my concern. AI is stupid. Currently cryptic compensate for that by allowing them to cheat. Elite content is balanced with the assumption that we will all be balancing our shields, so rather then intelligently focusing its attacks on certain facings the AI is simply given high enough dps to brake through all 4 of our facings.
If we could not balance our shields the AI would have to have its DPS cut accordingly, but much as it may surprise you (As some one reading the forums) people aren't that stupid. We could manage our trajectories to gain an advantage. Of course cryptic could then up the AI's dps some more to find a sweet spot, but its going to take time and work to get there.
Also once we are there where are we? is it somewhere that we want to be? Dedicating our ships to do damage in a single weapon arc will be a lot more dangerous then it is now, escorts might be in the same place that science ships and cruisers are now. Lets not swing the pendulum to far.
