Reply to pod cast, Cruiser Armor, Sci ships dual deflectors, and Escorts.

On the pod Cast http://www.podcastugc.com/archives/600 I has heard of the idea of Cruiser having Access to armor, a Wow Paladin like armor effect etc, Science ships access to dual deflectors, And such.

I Know this will create a bit of a Firestorm. But I had been thinking on how to approach it. with perhaps two Abilities Each Unique to that class of Ship For example. Cruisers Might get Access to use Heavy Armor consoles. The current ones would be standard armor, while heavy armor consoles would offer say.... 33-50% extra protection.

They would gain a Paladin like Aura with other ships, allowing those ships to say... get a higher defense when they are in like 5-7 kilometers.

This was just an idea on my part.

Science Ships would get the ability to make use of two deflectors with a flat bonus. If they have a two deflectors that give them say... 9 to particle generators, it gives them a total of 18 straight up with no deduction.

The secondary ability would be augmenting their passive ability, sensor analysis. Making it... max out faster in say half the time.

As for Escorts... They do need something special. I am not sure Equipment Wise... But, I was thinking... Improved Evasive Maneuvers, or Evasive Pattern Alpha. What it does once a minute when you are under evasive maneuvers Your escort will actually... Barrel Roll, Or perhaps as some people what... Loop de loop and end up behind the enemy ship... OR on the other Side of the enemy ships' shield you are facing say 5 kilometers away.

Perhaps their equipment might be a special console, one that allows you to copy up to 5 different commands in three ways. In Star Trek all captains had their own combat style. attack pattern Picard 1, Riker Alpha. Etc. The Attack pattern allows one to record up to say 30 seconds of auto flight time centered around a target, with present firing commands such as firing off attack patterns... weapon powers, evasive maneuvers, etc.

It was just an idea... I know this will draw flak from people, but Why not express your ideas for how you might do this? Please be kind and courteous in your responses.

    Escorts already have bonus to defence and speed, they also have insane turn rate that makes their evasive action much more efficient than one on cruiser. So one could say, they already have improved evassive action.

    I do not think, they need additional bonus.

    While I didn't originally like the idea of special armor for cruisers, I have changed my mind. Puting armor in special slot, would mean to free engineering slots for more turn gens / p2W stuff while maintaining same dmg reduction.

    Personaly I have always thought the the bonuses should be inversly proportional.

    I mean these are basically performance upgrades.

    Why would a ship with an already high performance system benifit more from an upgrade than a ship with a lower performance version? Thats like putting a 1000 hp engine in a fiat and getting the same % performance increas as putting the same engine in a ferarri.

    So an rcs upgrade should provide a larger performance increase on an already slow ship than on a fast one since the faster one probably already has a better version of the system.(this is currently in the works)



    Granted this wouldnt work for everything but the approach is sound, it just depends on what you would classify as a standard system and an "after market" upgrade.

    Cruisers need a "heavy beam array" and "dual heavy beam array" that is cruiser only to match the "dual cannons" and "dual heavy cannons" that are (were) escort only.

    This would be the giant phaser strips you see on ships like the Enterprise-D that are something like 10 Defiants long.

    Slower firing, harder hitting, and if you're really feeling bold, longer ranged.

    I like the ideas of secondary deflectors and armour slots as it will move things away from science slots only being for increasing shield cap/regen/universal and engineering being for only armour consoles or universal for 90% of ships.

    Though we would need to see the consoles like RCS, all power boosting, force fields....actually I'll just say all non tactical, non universal consoles need boosting as that pretty much is the case (a few exceptions maybe) to actually benefit from an addition of armour and deflectors.

    It is through repetition that we learn our weakness.

    Cruiser -> Heavy Armor

    Science -> Dual Deflector

    Escort -> Powered Engines



    Also, it would be nice to see the ability "Expel Warp Core" that could be used once per map and works like a tricobalt torpedo launcher, but more powerful.

    As for Escorts... They do need something special.

    Let them use Ramming Speed when under 75% instead of 50% :D

    Another idea could be special console slots. I know I feel somewhat 'cheated' in my Oddy using my 3 special consoles leaving me only 7 slots for other stuff. Make ships have 1, 2 or 3 special slots for this gear. It will 1.) give players more room for consoles and 2.) make cryptic more money since players will have a ship w/ a slot they can't fill w/o spending Zen!;)

    Why not just give Cruisers and Battle Cruisers more Engineering console slots and change the game mechanics to make diminishing returns less diminishing for C and BCs.
    Make the extra consoles slots just stack underneath the existing ones in the UI.

    I do not think escorts need any help at the this time.

    Science vessels with dual or a secondary deflector, simply make thier deflector basec abilities a % stronger.

    Heavy beam arrays will need to be balanced iether by a much smaller Firing Arc or have a slower firing rate to keep them balanced and avoid cruisers just spamming Bfaw with them recklessly.
