Personaly I would be happy to wait untill level 50 and unlock fed and kdf ships through a reputation system with them instead...
Oh god in heaven no!
With that said, I would like to see more interaction with the two factions. The choice is rather clear-cut for me, but I can see how it isn't for a new player.
Perhaps squeezing in another couple of missions introducing both factions between lvs 1 and 10 would give newbies some info they need to make an educated descision.
*can't be arsed to spend five minutes in photochop to slap a crappy image signature together*
personally, I think that the decision making point is rather sudden. There is no story behind it. D'Tan is talking about how everyone needs to work together and the forming of an alliance between the republic and both factions, then suddenly, he says something to the effect of "now's the time to choose a side, go talk to so-and-so and choose your allegiance." I don't mind choosing at that point in the story, but give me a reason to make that choice.
Yeah felt like i should do more for the republic, my people before joining the feds or the KDF , would of been nice to choose at a later level, oh well.
What does it matter if you choose it at 10, nothing changes really except for a few dialogue, and who your Fed/Kdf contacts are....besides that it's pretty much the Romulan republic fighting the Tal Shiar and their evil plans.
So in short: the "sales pitches" of each faction should probably be fleshed out a little more, and perhaps the rationale for having each captain ally with one or the other rather than working with both as needed should be spelled out (for what it's worth, I think the short answer to that is that you're pulling double-duty as an ambassador to that faction).
I've just had to make my choice in ally too and I have to agree with this statement above regarding fleshing out the reasons why a bit more. I really like the idea that we are to do double duty as an ambassador to the faction we choose here because that explains why we need free access to their home city and why we would be traveling beyond our own New Rom to another faction's territory at all. It explains why we would need to accept "clearance" from one faction or the other which would mean we can't be equal partners with both factions.
As it stands, I feel like I am going from a peace conference where I am working to unite with Feds and Klingons, to a dire warning that whichever side I choose to accept help from, the other will become my mortal enemy, only to return to New Rom at 50 on any character where Kling and Fed are encouraged to work together again.
At least if it was more like, "If you choose to ally with this faction you will be expected to act as Ambassador to the faction and thus will gain security clearance, free passage to protected territory, and access to technology secrets of the faction. For the protection of your new partner, you will no longer be permitted to associate directly with the other faction." it would not be so jarring being suddenly faced with the choice to me personally.
On the whole, I think the devs have done a really beautiful job with this expansion and I am enjoying the experience!
The whole part leading up to the choice was a bit rushed, IMO. You are off and an enthusiastic member of the RR before you can blink, comparatively speaking, blowing up mogai's and D'Deridex's. There doesn't seem to be much lead-up to a lot of the events that happen, they all seem to just kinda happen.
This is the way that the Romulan Republic has been designed from the start and we will do not expect to to move the level at which Romulans must choose an ally.
I appreciate that not everyone is happy with this, but it is the story we're telling and some will like it and some will not.
It was not an arbitrary decision and the way the Romulans faction is implemented on TRIBBLE is how it will be on May 21.
I'm guessing i've seen maybe like 2/5 of the romulan content so far but its all great content and as much as I love the KDF I most likely won't use the KDF stuff unless its the +1 consoles are available. Along with much better missions coming may the Romulan Republic expansion is basically the best things of the fed side and kdf rolled into one faction.
Although only disappointment is I don't see any implementation yet of tactics made available to make the T'varo I believe and the b'rel on par to use projectiles to be easily countered by brace for impact and shield tanking. That is going to be a big problem especially with the ionized gas console is on the verge of no purpose or no value in it when those enhanced battle cloak ships don't do much for a player other than make someone want to spray a can of raid at us lol.
As far as when you choose... It fits within the story line I've seen so far.

My thoughts exactly, there seems to be little to no in-game explanation.
You go from farmer on a little backwater colony to fully trained starship Captain and seemingly key member of the Romulan Republic in the blink of an eye.
As for the choice of ally, that to me feels like it was set up to nudge people in the direction of choosing KDF. Up to the point where you are asked to make a choice you have almost zero interaction with the Federation.
You at least have more involvement with the KDF in that mission and given that both my character and the Klingons seem to have an intense hatred of the Tal Shiar, whereas the Federation sit there as an unknown entity, it felt more natural that my character would probably have chosen to ally with the KDF.
