I mean this in the nicest possible way: quit.

Seriously, I'm not trying at all to sound like or BE a jerk here. Lets say I ask you what you are going to do this evening. I highly doubt your reply would be: "I am going to work Star Trek Online."

Replace that one word: "I am going to play Star Trek Online".

It is a game. It is meant to be a fun and a enjoyable hobby, not something you feel obligated to do or forced into.

If you feel this way, why are you doing it? That can not be enjoyable. I want to reiterate that I am not being a snob or mean-spirited in this regard. No one can/is forcing you to play. So my advice to you dear sir, is either put a halt to the activities that make this game a job to you, or just stop playing altogether. The point here is fun.

There is "to me" when I play an objective to do. Eather let it be getting better gear, more BNP's, more sexier ships and soon making a whole new character "Romulan". I honestly dont feel the game is a job, but there is alot to do, that does require significant amounts of time to complete. Im a gamer.. plain and simple. So my enjoyment is playing my game which is this game.

I would suggest if the game is becoming a job for you that maybe this isnt your game, but for me I love this game and Im supporting it 100%.

If you go hard with the rep grinds in this game, it will very easily turn into a "job." The game has so many different forms of currency as a cheap way to keep players back in "Level 1" in something.

    I know how you feel.

I did both reputations on 3 characters and it just wore me out. I had several weeks with plenty of marks and what not to insert but I just couldn't bring myself to move the sliders, all burned out.

Now I am sort of in the opposite role. I don't have anything in the game left to grind for and actually wish there were a costume, ship or whatever to work on.

I will probably play the tholian reputation, I will probably hate it and when it's done I will be missing something to do again.

In the end I am happy with my characters and nearly everything I earned I still like and do still enjoy the game.

How can I be making money for them if I don't put any money into it? :P

Maybe not directly, but you and I both know that if you've ever converted dilithium into Zen/C-points, or bought keys/lockbox ships/c-store items off the exchange, then you've aided in putting money in their pocket. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.

They don't thrive off of us paying them directly anymore.

I am visiting my parents and away from STO since 07.04. I am not sure what more I have missed except first contact event. My starbase might have slow grinding progress as I am among the top 3 in romulan and starfleet grinding.

But honestly, it feels kinda nice to have a break (and I'd say it is a forced break as my laptop cant run STO :D), reconnect your folks, see old mates etc etc etc.

So don't make it as another job. make a plan, login when there's an event (I usually login when there are fleet events to score more fleet marks) etc etc etc

and yes, your gilrfriend/boyfriend/hubby/wifey/etc. must be quite understanding towards your demand :D

perhaps you should try for accolades hunting aka completing all accolades from fleet events :D

To me, that's not my money, because someone else took their hard-earned money and converted it to Zen to buy Dilithium.

Or my 500 Zen stripened I get, that's money out of their pocket.

People farm Dilithium and put it up for sale on the Dil Exchange for Zen. Players wouldnt be able to buy Dil if we didnt farm it, hence if you do sell Dil for Zen then you effectively ARE working for Cryptic on a very, very low wage.

If anyone thinks STO feels like a job, go play Eve Online for a year or more. If you do that, I dare you to say this game really feels like work without feeling extreme humiliation that comes with realising how ridiculously wrong you are.

And here's why: In STO, you can stop playing and walk away for days, weeks, months, or years and everything you built up will be as it was when you get back. Try doing that in Eve Online when you're a member of an ingame Alliance.

    Just wondering.

In some aspects it is work. I think like in other mmo's they overestimated how much resources and currency that people actually get and can use for projects outside of getting their gear together.

Severely limited is what i'd call their rewards compared to other games especially in the resource department right now. (the EC stuff you get that's worthless but gives you a pretty penny for example) is very lacking and 8k dil a day is behind even their own design when comparing it to what they'll be doing in their NWO game.

So far to me it isn't. I don't have to log on at a certain time to hit a STF or group run. Then I don't have to meet a quota on stuff for a fleet on getting projects done. Or rushed trying to get geared up to join the others for STFs.

I can't play like I used to where I had hours to burn for the game. So I play for enjoyment leisure at my pace. Which I'm really liking it. Even with the Romulan Rep grind wasn't too bad. Where before on the other MMO I hated it.

    Is STO a Job? YES!

I discussed this with Branflakes with me one day and asked why I wasn't having fun, and I told him point-blank that STO is like a job.

Prior to F2P, I could just play one character and enjoy myself flying around and doing the things I wanted to do. If I wanted to switch a character, I could. But when F2P came, I had no choice but having to devote my time in doing DOFFing, STF grinding, and working on Dilithium to "make a living".

Then Starbases came then I had to devote MORE time to working on my Starbase, then the Embassy came then that took more of my Dilithium, which made me having to work hard on my 6 mains. And then I realized, I no longer had any real personal time.

Now with LoR, I now have to devote even MORE time to the three new Romulan characters that I wanted to create. And I learned that the more characters you got in STO, the more work you have to do to maintain them.

That is why people have left, because people got tired of maintaining their characters instead of actually having fun. All the channels that were alive and now dead, because people just had it with "the job". It's not about fun anymore, its all about earning Fleet Marks or Dilithium.

    Wish Cryptic realized it.

    Emphasis added.

This is a CHOICE. This is SOMETHING THAT YOU VOLUNTARILY DO.

You are not forced to have 9 characters, nor are you forced to maintain them all. You can have one character in this game, and be perfectly happy grinding it to the top at your own pace, and not forcing yourself to keep up with the starbase next door.

I have one character. My main character that I play. It is not a chore to keep up with him. I play my character whenever I want to. I stop when I don't. I have kept up with my projects, my gear is pretty high end, and my boffs have some amazing stories to tell. That is all that matters. Even as a fleet leader, I don't see this as a job. I do this for FUN! I love playing video games. I love Star Trek. And I love leading something great.

If this is starting to feel like a job, then STOP! Go outside, watch a movie, read a book. and then come back.

It becomes a job if you make it one, if anything this game is pretty casual (Too casual to some of the more hardcore mmo players at times). Although that's just how things are, luckily this game has a decent balance for both categories in most cases.

Grinding the same missions for the same Marks or dilithium day after day can certainly seem more like a job than a game at times. But when it does start to feel like a job, it's time to do/play something else. And who knows, MAYBE, if enough people get tired of the grind, grind, grinds for this mark or that mark and play other games the developers just might get over their reputation/mark obsession.

im not in a fleet, ive had enough of fleets in this game and wont join another, but that has only simplified matters though, it frees up time. both swtor and sto are like a regular chore.
