I don't really remember anymore. I know a developer commented on it months ago though. I forget if it was a technical problem or a marketing problem (i.e. do people who own both the Galaxy-X and Galaxy-R get the updated ship for free or a discount). I'm sure someone around here remembers the details.
There were problems with the mechanics of the lance, and then they had animation issues with how the saucer would align when rejoining - it clipped through the 3rd nacelle. That is the last I remember hearing about it.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

How does this differ from the insame amount of clipping issues with just about every costume in the game, amoung many others?

That would be a question for the art department.

In a related vein, I also know they were working on being able to saucer separate and MVAE separate while in motion. I wonder what happened to that also?
Every so often we get another sound byte that indicates they are closer to having it all ready. While it really has been going on for some time, this recent bug with the separation ships gives me hope they are actually really doing something with it, and some less-than-ready portion of it slipped on to live...
I can dream, can't I?
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!
If clipping is such a problem (from the looks of it, not that much), why not just have the saucer re-dock with the stardrive section in reverse from the front?
It might look a bit silly, but hell at this point, that doesn't really matter these days.

HOLY TRIBBLE! You're on to something! You should work for them. If you did, we'd have our saucer sep by now! lol! Great idea though! I agree as well.
Most players would probably be quite happy to have even crappy Saucer Separation, but then there would be that small percentage of forum posters who just love pointing out every mistake Cryptic makes and would use it as ammunition against Cryptic for the next few years. So better for Cryptic to just get it done whenever they get it done. It's a side project, anyway. It's not really something that was promised to us.

I'm guessing it's done and they're just waiting for a way to sell it the players for some ridiculous pricing schedule.
I recall reading on STO Wiki that the Dreadnought Cruiser Saucer Sep was going to be released before Season 8 (or late 2013). But I also recall reading that it was slated for release last spring, then in the summer, then by Christmas, and yeah...you can see where I'm going with this.
I just think its hilarious that if you destroy a ship that separates (Galaxy, Prometheus) it reforms while exploding which is completely ridiculous Surely it would be better if all parts just exploded independently
That's why most of us aren't programmers or animators.
And, again, Saucer Sep on the ship is a side project - something they do in their spare time rather then something promised to us.

Don't forget the response by the equally if not more so rabid Cryptic Defenders.
It would be nice to get any saucer separation and just ignore the naysayers.
Another question: was there ever any talk about releasing an "updated" Dreadnought Cruiser? Perhaps one with a universal BOFF station or an increased tactical BOFF station? Something to make better use of it's cannons (seeing as they can be used with this cruiser)?

What I'm afraid of is the nerfs we'll be taking in order to separate the saucer.
