I'm looking for info about weapons. So far all I've found is descriptions about what they are made of, and what they look like. What good is that? What is the difference between a phaser and an antiproton beam? What does each do? If they don't do anything different, what's the use in having different weapons. What weapons work best on the Borg, the Romulans, the Klingons? Maybe everyone here knows where to find this information, but I sure don't. I see people using weapons that take out targets in 3 to 5 shots, when I'm getting blisters on my fingers trying to kill a single warbird! How many times have I watched as someone takes out a Borg cube by themselves, and it would take me all day and 500 lives to do that. Where are you getting these weapons? When I've asked this question before all I get is, "Well, you just...". Which is about as helpful as digging out my eye with a spoon. Where do I go to get an explanation of the weapons, and how to get the most powerful weapons there are?

One should add that it is not all simply about the damage type - actually, the type of energy weapon is far less important than one might think though sticking to one particular damage type is important.
It is more a question of the skill distribution, the Bridge Officer abilities, the ship being used and its' equipment and the energy distribution. As getting into details would require a lot of work I propose searching for 'build' in addition to the name of Your preferred ship class or profession. You should be able to find a lot of information in these forums and keep in mind that not everything does require very rare MK XII equipment, Zen-store purchases or years of practice.
The Skill Planner and the according search via ship class and character allegiance or profession might be worth a look, too - at the very least You can try to put Your current skill distribution and ship there, save the build and create a link to post here - so other players can have a look and comment here.
I appreciate the replies, but they are not helpful. The wiki just tells you what the weapons look like and who uses them. Are you crafting these weapons? Is there a place where you craft more powerful weapons? Not only weapons but shields too. Where are you getting shields that shrug off hits that take me out? I understand that consoles and officers are a part of your power distribution, but they can't be that much. I've installed purple officers, and they have increased my power ratings a little. But I'm nowhere near the power ratings of a lot of these ships I see taking on Borg cubes by themselves and destroying them in a matter of seconds. I have ships with Mk XII cannons and beams, and I can't begin to do the damage these ships do. The biggest problem with the wiki is that it's written by people who know the game inside and out, so they assume too often "Well, everyone knows that." Well, guess what? Not everyone knows what you're talking about sometimes, and they don't know the steps you know that you left out of the explanation.
To give you good advice, we need to know more about your ship and play style: for example do you fly an escort with cannons, a cruiser or a science vessel? Here are some general points:
Basic points to boost your damage:
1. Run with as much weapon power as you can. 100 Weapon power is -the- best way to boost your dps if you're not running it already and you're not a torpedo boat.
2. Make sure all of your energy weapons are the same damage type (not necessarily the same weapon type, but damage type, look for the line that says ### ________ damage, where the blank could be: phaser, disruptor, antiproton, etc) and fill your tactical console slots with consoles that boost that damage type.
3. Make sure you have skills in weapon training, energy/projectile weapons training and specialization if you can manage the points. Skills in targetting systems is absolutely necessary, and weapons performance is nice too.
4. Do the reputation system. I am blown away by how many people tell me "Oh I don't do those". The passive abilities from both Omega and New Romulus Reputation will help your DPS greatly (For example, your base critical chance with no skills or equipment is 2.5%, a T2 Romulan reputation power more than doubles that (+3%) with no downsides) Two excellent items from the reputation systems are the Assimilated Console (+weapon power, +crit chance and crit severity: obtained from Omega T1) and the Kinetic Cutting Beam ( 360 degree arc like a turret (so put it in your rear weapons) that fires a beam with kinetic damage, does good damage but really shines due to the 2 piece omega set bonus: this will give you bonus weapon power and make your energy weapons much more effective)
The different weapon types do not affect raw damage, but give an additional effect of some kind, usually at the bottom of the description (For example: Phasers have a 2.5% chance to shutdown an enemy's subsystems, Disruptors have a 2.5% chance to put a hull resistance debuff on the target, Antiproton get 20% bonus crit severity instead of a 2.5% proc)

I can't help but notice that page has incorrect information. Antiproton weapons do not have +2.5% critical chance, they have +20% crit severity.
I tend to trust wiki info more than in-game tooltips.
