Getting a dark/bright skin color when making an alien

How do I do this? I want to make my character skin a very bright or very dark color, but it doesn't look like these are available. But, I have seen toons with them. So, I'm wondering- how do they get that skin color.
For example. I want to create an alien with jet black skin, but how? The closest things to it kind of looks like colors P1 and P24. It seems like each color has it's own palette of shades of that color, but I'm sure how to access each palette. For example, when I click the black icon above the 16x24 grid it doesn't show all shades of dark. I can get it semi dark, but not as dark as I'd lile.
