Cryptic is doing it right!

This thread probably should be in the tribble forum...For the longest time I've been saying that Engineers are not healers. While on tribble checking out the new changes. Where you create a new character, the three professions listed provides a subsection that states their group usefulness in game. Engineers - Tank, Science - Healers.

As an Engineer, I've been consistently frustrated with people saying that we are healers. I am thankful that Cryptic corrected it.

I guess for all those that wrote the PVP Ship builds lists (which are quite helpful by the way), might be a good idea to revamp the pages. I'd love to see tanking builds for Engineers to try out.

Thanks, and thanks to all for letting me ramble.

    Era Skysni disagrees.

Sadly, I just find my Sci more fun and more useful in teamplay. :(

Engineer? Tank? PvP? Does not compute.

Science? Space? Healer? Does not compute.

On the ground, that's reasonably true, in space your class has little to do with your combat role. I could be an engineer in an escort performing a DPS role, just with better survivability than a tactical in the same ship.

That said, I think one of my science officer friends does a better job tanking Armek than I could ever do as an Engineer. On the ground I'd say Engineers are more about utility than anything else.

I beg to differ, never once have I seen Captain Picard ask Geordi for a heal. Never once have I seen Kirk say to Scotty, give me a heal. With regards to your statement about being an engineer in an escort:
    1. Your damage will be cut in half compared to a tac.
    2. Your survivability is not significantly greater than a tac in an escort.

You would survive better in a science ship over an escort and significantly greater in a cruiser.

Tanks don't really work in PvP. In PvE there are aggro mechanics to make enemies shoot you. At least there are in good PvE, STO PvP is just a DPS race. In PvP people can just ignore you. What engineers really need to be viable in PvP is some kind of "control mitigation factor."

When did I say the Engineers were healers? I said they might work decently as tanks and were more suited to utility positions (i.e. buff/debuff and secondary damage). It's my opinion that Engineers make terrible healers on the ground, because they only have 1 option for it (Recharge Shields, the generators aren't very useful in a true healing role). Besides, I don't recall Captain Janeway bringing along the Doctor on an away mission and asking for a heal during a firefight either...

Regarding your assertion that my "damage will be cut in half and my survivability is not significantly greater than a tac in an escort," I may not have as much damage as a tactical in a min/maxed Fleet Defiant, but my damage output is still fairly respectable and I survive a fair few more hits in my Chimera than my fleet mates in their escorts (although this has more to do with specific ship choice and ability selection). You must have some sort of uber tactical who has 100% uptime on a double-damage Attack Pattern Alpha to have double my damage... and this still has nothing to do with your combat role in space having anything to do with your character class. As you pointed out, my survivability would increase greatly in a cruiser (and I agree with this statement), but that's not the combat role I'm trying to fill.

Between this thread and some of the stuff in the Ker'rat thread... I'm wondering if there's the start of a concerted effort to troll the PvP community.

There needs to be some form of Capture the Flag. Tanks do really well as the flag carrier in most other MMOs I've seen.

You can sit there in your Eng/Cruiser with RSF, RSP, and EPtS 3 and tank 5 Tac/Escort's Alphas*.

You know what everyone else will do? Just go on ignoring you. And while you tickle everyone else with your Beams (because lol Eng Beams), the rest of your team will get eaten alive since you won't have the heals to protect them because you used your high level Eng abilities to tank.

And sure, while Sci can heal, I'd hardly say that's it's main focus. While Sci heals are quite potent (TSS shield resist and massive SciTeam burst heals/cleanses), it's important to remember that a lot of Sci heal numbers are padded due to the fact that shield heals are multiplied by 4 for the scoreboards, for healing applied to each facing.

*Actually probably not. But for the sake of the argument, pretend.

No engineers in tanks are not healers...they are useless.A sci can heal or debuff.A engineer in cruiers...well ,good to have one around for laughs .Im sure a invincible brick with almost zero damage will win the batle for who has the most badass blader in arena

yea right ,Im sure you will get that soon lol
No maps in 3 years remember.Kirk's ship is fun for those who can't pilot a escort (moves to fast reason) or spam magic from a sci ship ,but at the moment useless.

well, talking Only about captain skills, yes, eng's can tank more than sci's, miracle worker and rotate shield frequency are specially good doing that, but still, engs have very weak skills like eng team which is very weak compared to the others, and nadion inversion, which makes a sci to do a much more complete job in a premade, dampening field is a lot more usefull than a miracle worker since it is for the whole team, sci team is the best of them all in my opinion, and subnuke/photonic fleet if well used can give a strategic superiority to the team which for example eps power transfer or nadion inversion/eng team can't

the rest is all about the ship type you in
