A lot of people will suggest DHCs and turrets for the Dreadnought. But without things like the subspace jumper and tachyokinetic converter you will find it very hard to keep targets in your arc (esp. in PvP). Beams are the traditional cruiser weapon, but a beam boat Galaxy-X just makes you an underwhelming Regent. Try single cannons, with a fore DBB and aft turrets?
Gear combo varies enormously based on your weapon loadout and whether you prefer PvE or PvP. A standard and solid choice is the Borg Engine and Deflector, with the MACO shield.
Fastest engine, advanged fleet hyper impulse [spd]x3 [turn]
best turning engine, advanced fleet hyper impulse [turn]x3 [spd]
for example. Which of those are best for you depends on your ship, your class and what you want from it.
Whats the best in shields, deflectors, engines, and weapons for the Federation Dreanought Cruiser?
I like to the Aegis Set. It looks nice in my opinion and so long as you are moving even a teensy bit, you get a nice Defense boost to go along with its adaptive shields.
As for weapons, I have said it before and I shall probably say it again: I enjoy running a Galaxy-X with ten turrets (two of which are Console turrets). It is fun to zip around machine gunning in 360 degrees. When you have no real firing arc on display people tend to forget that that you still have that phaser lance up front. They'll fly passed your fore and you give them a nasty reminder.
Granted, it is not the most powerful weapon set-up, but I find it fun to play with just the same. If you happen to be playing PvE, then it does not matter at all what equipment you have. Only in PvP does equipment matter. Even then, ten turrets will do all right. Just don't expect to out-damage an Escort.
