The player housing feature was an often wished addition instead of
personal instances, at the beginning of Guild Wars 2, too. And I think
it'd be a viable option in Star Trek Online with further ship customisation.
As well as other unique reasons to visit a starship's interior. Like say:
Transaction records, achievement walls with trophies, a holodeck
training room, a wardrobe (change just your clothes), interactive
minigames, ship interior based episodes, daily ship events (like say
evening gambling, a holodeck competition, ship brawls, a drinking
contest, prisoner interrogations, medical outbreaks, shipmate review,
training exercises, civil disputes, casualty funerals, scientific anomaly)
and so much more! Definitely making it worth the venture for Cryptic.
Let's be honest, Doffs get all the interesting stuff to do on your ship, all you get to do is shoot at things, it would take a lot of work but it would be so much more interesting if some of those doff missions were things that the captain could participate in.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
You purchased a plot of land somewhere in the world, price and size depends on the area you purchase in. You use an xyz coordinate system to pick, place and build dozens of structures. It was amazing, it was yours, custom, how you liked it, and everyone that did it was proud of what they did, they hung out there, it was their home, because they built it. It wasn't all vanity either, a lot of items offered storage or usability.
The only issue was the system was grindy as anything, but the game had dozens of crafting vocations, and to get proficient at being self reliant required a ton of work.
So if we all started with a blank canvas, and have dozens of items to choose from to place, wouldn't that make people proud? Easily monetized by selling enhanced or larger rooms, premium items from the dil or c store.
Its an item that needs a good deal of art time, even if you re-use many assets they need to be ported over for that system, set dimensions, boundaries, etc. Someone would need to create the UI for it, plus the actual systems to calculate where and how you can place the items given. Could possibly be a great addition to the crafting overhaul.
Because RPers spend money hand over fist on fluff items like this, and money allows the company to pay people to make the game better.
RP's spend less money in the game than other, usually PvP'ers. Now get back to your bridge scum. We need the devs to fix actual game issues first before adding more un-wanted and broken content.
Long ago I made a thread suggesting just that. Like a Boarding Party set where one side starts in the shuttle bay and the other team are the defenders using the ship to help you out.
Kirks apartment was after he was promote out of being a starship captain. DS9 had apartments for the stations staff, including pilots charged with ensuring the stations security.
Starfleet is lot like the US Navy, where crewmembers have quarters on their ships but also have homes on the mainland (on or off the base). On DS9, the Defiant's base was DS9. For other Federation starships, their homes was on the homeworlds.
So many possibilities for locales in STO:
Earth
The Moon
Mars
Andoria
Vulcan
Betazed (when added)
Risa
K-7
SB-39
DS9
Qo'nos
Forcas
Boreth

Heck, I spent 20 bucks to buy the tac escort retro, not because I wanted the ship stats, but because I wanted to RP my character in the big chair of a Defiant class. Plus all the clothing I've purchased (hell, my article about Legacy of Romulus was *actually* about the tailor!)

Maybe today, but when I was deployed all my belongings were boxed up and put into storage as the barracks were re-assigned. I guess if I lived off base with family they would've maintained the home.
I didn't have that luxury, when the ship was on deployment my home was 3X3X8 foot box, a locker, and the squadron readyroom.
Customiseable quarters on ship I could get behind, choosing trophys, art, trinkets, weapon displays and furniture would help make the ship feel more lived in

None of those were on shipboard assignment though
DS9's quarters are equivilent to ships quarters
Kirk & Barclay's had apartments because they were assigned planetside
Would still be nice to have things like customizable furniture and such. Change up the wall hangings in our quarters. Yes, it's a military vessel, but let us recall the quarters in shows like TNG. They were pretty eclectic.
I'd still prefer keeping player housing aboard starships (by reworking the existing interior maps), rather than creating a new private instance on various homeworlds/starbases.
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.

I thought I heard swg had this feature. If Cryptic can make money off of it why not? We can all get our condo on Risa.
Parallels: my second mission for Fed aligned Romulans.

Completed Starbase, Embassy, Mine, Spire and No Win Scenario
Nothing to do anymore.

Don't forget about Picard and his home at the vineyard and in Generations how "people find a time to start a family".

I'd pay SO MUCH for this idea.
