I assume that a lot of players like to keep the best weapons they buy or find for themselves and give their boffs the hand-me-downs as they upgrade, maintaining a weapon superiority over their crew at all times until deep into the endgame.
If this is the case then surely I am not alone in wondering why the HELL the stupid AI that controls the boffs allows them to walk in front of my toon EVERY TIME I start firing at a target.
This has to be the most inane behaviour possible. To remove the most powerful weapon from the battle at the outset and continue to get in the way from that point onwards is absurd.
- But Mike, you can set waypoints for your stupid boffs, that will stop them from freely wandering around
Oh THANK YOU. That's so convenient, isn't it? Please let me get close enough to fire, then don't spot me for a minute while I micromanage these idiots who somehow made it out of the Academy without being shot in the back enough times to learn a bit of battlefield etiquette.
I guess this is too tough to fix and low priority, but I needed to vent.
This games entire AI anywhere and everywhere needs a complete overhaul, I mean the only way the borg can kill you is with a one shot powerful enough to one shot ITSELF because its so stupid it doesn't know anything about viral matrix or other disrupts/disables or anything about tactics.
This game should be better but the AI lets it down...
If you don't use "shooter" mode and instead use RPG mode, you don't get this problem. Also run the mission again with 4 friends and you don't have a need for Boffs and it'll probably go better especially the space battles.
Don't know about ground, but someone told me, that there was time when AI was made smarter. The result was that mentaly disabled* (also called players) in this game screamed for nerf cause Borg was too hard (impossible) for them to kill.
Yeah, we will never get AI upgrade, cause most people playing this game are too stupid to handle proper AI.
And yes, friendly NPCs are stupid too. But I would rather get enemy AI or general AI upgrade, then just some friendly AI only upgrade.
* - not saying that all players are that stupid but it seems that most is.
General
You can pause the action while you give orders
You can also give your boffs standing orders
Federation specific
Your captain should NOT be the heaviest armed that is the Security officers job
you are the most valuable and should be behind cover while Security (expendible tacticals) do the dying (this is regulation)
Klingon specific
Why are you not CHARGING the enemy with a blade? does your maternal parent not wear the footgear of a soldier?
Romulan specific
Let them handle it you have better things to do
I never have this problem. My boffs are always running around to the side, shooting away while I'm runing around the opposite way, drawing aggro so the boffs can get the flanking bonus. Even the two versions of me when I use my orb shard don't get in my way.

A Romulan Strike Team, Missing Farmers and an ancient base on a Klingon Border world. But what connects them? Find out in my First Foundary mission: 'The Jeroan Farmer Escapade'
I have noted this as well, but just figured, hey, they want to protect there Captain and let them get on with it adapting my play style accordingly.
Also, I started the Romulan mission arc earlier on a new fed alt, and noticed Romulan ships targeting themselves with heavy plasma torps quiet regularly.

let the Klingons do the fighting
the Romulans take the credit
and the federation can sweep up and patch up the wounded
