Isn't the Romulan Star Empire gone since the destruction of Romulas? New name for a new Planet kinda thing? You can still be backstabbing and as mischievous as you want.
The Romulans broke into two factions. A bunch of goody-little-two-shoes broke off and started their own state that is looking for peaceful cohabitation with the Federation and many want eventual union with Vulcan. They "desire to live peacefully, leaving behind the secrecy and deception forced upon them by the Star Empire."
In other words, they're not really Romulans any more...
My hope is that you can choose how you want to play as a Romulan. I can definitely see people wanting to play a badass backstabbing, cunning, and ruthless romulan, but at the same time there are those people that may want to play as a noble and honest romulan (as ironic and non-canon as that sounds).
I wouldn't have said it was that non-canon - that's exactly the way I'd have described the bloke that Captain Kirk ran into in Balance of Terror, and being the first Romulan ever to appear in the series I think he has bragging rights. OK, so a noble and honest Romulan who wanted to blow them all to bits with plasma torpedoes, but what else are enemies good for?
Basically, the Romans-in-space thing is in play. You want to be the hero of the Republic ready to die for his cause, you can do that... you want to be the assassin who makes sure he does, you can do that too. Well, you can if Cryptic get around to arranging multiple mission options. Come on, Cryptic, this really is important - it's the story that does it...
karl2025 - hmmm... if any of the breakaway group were actually stuck in a turbolift with a Vulcan I suspect we'd find out just how Romulan they were...
You know what the hardest thing will be? Starting fleets for the Romulans and having to build up to get cool fleet gear.
Gentleman. Prepare your grinding!!
It seems like you might be interested in this. I got together a list of all the materials you need to get a new starbase to Engineering T2 for fleet weapons.
A lot of it is gatherable now.
10,140 Fleet Marks (cant gather these unless they become account bound)
If the rumours of the KDF receiving more content are true, then I wonder if that means a big chunk of the Romulan campaign will be against the KDF? This would make it a lot more likely that the KDF can get much the same missions but in reverse, giving both sides some much needed content for their campaign.
I'm mostly looking forward to the new playable ships and any universal content such as the Tholian reputation system.
I assume the Romulan campaign will end much like the KDF and Federation with a kind of grudging peace, so they can coexist on the Dominion/Borg/New Romulus etc. stuff as everyone else currently does, since I expect the aim of future episodes will be toward unification against the Undine/Iconians.

I really hope that is the tack Cryptic takes. It would fit well with their road 2409 materials and boost the KDF's much needed mission count.
My two concerns for the Romulan faction are pretty much the same as my concerns for the KDF.
1) Are there enough missions to allow leveling to cap without ridiculous grinding?
2) Will there complete TOS uniforms?

10,140 Fleet Marks (cant gather these unless they become account bound)
500,400 Dilithium (can gather this)
135 Engineering Duty Officers
135 Operations Duty Officers
147 Engineering/Operations Duty Officers (cant gather these)
510,000 Expertise (cant not gather this on a new romulan lol)
15,500 Provisions
1,200 Data Samples
2,875 Industrial Replictors
4,725 Industrial Energy Cells
625 Self Sealing Stem Bolts
2,375 Water Purification Systems (can gather all these but might as well just stick 2 million EC in your account bank to cover it all)
Hope that is helpful. Alternatively look up my handle @korhil in May and we will get you an invite to my current fleet's Romulan counterpart.
