Watch about about 2:00 in, as numerous Jem'Hadar Attack Ships fire what is clearly cannons over and over at the Odyssey and the Runabouts. Yes, the Captain of the Odyssey calls them "Phased Polaron beams", but they are clearly cannon SFX.
Cannons are canon.
argument validated. Thread is now considered (imo) to be rhetorical and general whining. Sending whambulance, ETA 3 mins.
That may be true (or not, I don't know), but if they weren't endgame ships, they wouldn't be anywhere near as desirable. The purpose of lock box ships is to sell master keys; no point putting in a ship hardly anyone is going to want.
The JHAS should NEVER been made the best escort in-game. In practice they were Zergling-ish and what the above poster stated about them being comparable to a Lt.Cmndr B'Rel is accurate.
Why a ship that is decades old is suddenly the best "Escort" in game is silly. ANd don't give me this "b..b..but Excelsior!" nonsense
Wow, nice find, syberghost. I agree, it ends the discussion right there.
On a related note, I wish Ramming Speed would do that kind of damage. If a JHAS can take out a Galaxy, larger ships should be able to do more than scratch the paint on a target using RS. Would add an interesting dynamic to PvP.

Weren't those supposed to be torpedoes? Granted, they were firing pretty fast. And I imagine torpedoes would've just blown up a runabout on a single hit. :P
They don't match the torpedoes used by them later... though they don't match the energy weapons either, so that doesn't mean much, they probably just didn't get a full design pass for that episode. They do fire from the same place the beam does in later episodes (among other spots), but that's not always consistent either, there's several examples of weapons firing the wrong thing in the shows.
On the other hand, the shows have also said "beam" referring to bolt weapons plenty of times, so the dialog mismatch also doesn't mean much.
Yep, Ds9 episode weapon graphics for JHAS varied quite a bit. While I agree that the JHAS were never officially portrayed to exceed the mobility and firepower of the USS Defiant, Cryptic needed a cross-faction "money ship" to generate income once the F2P model was adopted. Since the Dominion isn't going to be a playable faction any time soon, the JHAS was selected to be the lock box chase prize.
"If you can't beat them, join them..." -- so I finally got one myself
oh for Christ sake, its not a matter of lore its a matter of "they never said it couldn't be done"
how can it compromise the lore when the lore it self never even said that certain ships couldn't use cannons, really if that's your argument for this then in the early 90s "reality" was compromised when auto-motive experts started designing the first "green energy" car. my god where is the freaking logic in this thread.

It is widely documented that the Jem'hadar attack ship only used polaron/phased polaron BEAM weapons.
At no point was it shown them using any type of cannon style weapon.
What is the reason for this rather blatant mistake?
The documentation you reference is over 30 years old and does not reflect the current state of Federation, or Dominion, military technology... if you're looking for a canon friendly answer that is it.

Almost all escorts do this, the only escort that had cannons back then was the Defiant. SO why are you not complaining why escorts use cannons?
