Fantastic thread name OP! And its so true, not only does this "promotion" involve players in STO's gambling system, therefore making them more likely to buy lockbox keys, it also floods the doff market! Yay Cryptic!!
Meh, they're not worth it for the 10 Lobi even with almost being guaranteed only 4 Lobi from a box. That's given my luck with boxes - like I said, I think I've made a "profit" on one box I've opened since they came out. I get the 200 Lobi for a Tachyokinetic on a toon and I don't open anything more on them...
Got enough DoFFs stuffed into my ship, i'd rather have the EC value instead.

Heh, I got gorj the widowmaker (or something like that) purple flight deck officer. He's not much use on a raptor but he sure looks cool in his purpleness. Anyone wanna trade for a subnuc doff ?
Looked at the special. Thought, I'd like a couple of those DOffs, ten lobi per box offsets some of the cost, will try 2 - about $5 - just to see what happens.
Jem Bug in box 2. Woooohooooo!!! Off to the casinos while my luck holds.

1) If I really want a ship, I do better buying keys and selling them on the exchange, using the EC to buy the ship I want from the exchange. That way I know exactly what it will cost me, and whether or not I'm willing to ante up. The downside is that others have to ignore this so that I can sell my keys, and so that the ships will be available on the exchange.
2) I only play lock boxes if the minimum guaranteed items are worth the cost to me.
3) I might get lucky, but I probably won't, and I'm sure not going to count on it.

But, let me point out that this is not a pvp topic.
