enviromental dangers in space?

Is there any plan for adding more environmental dangers to space?

I have always been a big fan of using my environment to assist in any fight. Knowing how to use your environment to your advantage is as important as having the better guns in many senarios.

This has also been of critical use with in numerous Star Trek shows and movies. In most cases itdue to facing an enemy of much greater fire power. II hope to see this added to the game in both more pve and pvp maps.

A list of a few ideas

Blackholes - Great for playing cat and mouse type games or use of tractors to push appounents into black holes.

Stars or suns _ A point of Sucide or playing chicken into the sun. A great way for tanks
to break off aways from smaller and more heavy hitting escorts.

Flying into the damaging effects of a sun or star. The smaller ships would
have to either pull out early or risk taking the extra damage from the close
distance to the star surface and the weapons of the tank.
It would give the tanks a little extra dps to help finishe off the escort
more quickly.

Nebula's - There are countless nebula in star trek. I would like to see some in pvp that effect your ship in differents ways. such as hard to target, and lack for shields. I would say it should reduce your targeting distance down to 1km so you have to be on top of eachother like in wrath of con .

Actually.... there IS one map that does this. the Briar patch. It has these pockets of gas that explode when shot.

This isn't a sim, too many gamers would cry if their shiny new ship hit an asteroid and exploded.
    :D
I so miss the old dynaverse days of tractoring an enemy and pushing him into an asteroid.

Black holes and pulsars would be really fun to see in game. Also star coronas that cause damage when approached. Having a rescue mission in a corona would be interesting.

I'm 100% all for these ideas, I just don't know how realistic they would be to implement.

On the matter of Stars and Black Holes.
I don''t think the game could handle them in any way that would do them justice. They are just to big. A star alone would be many many times the size of the biggest map in game. While black holes are in general much smaller, they are still of considerable size and have the matching gravity of a star of more in case of the larger ones. Given the tech in Trek ships, you are dead and gone when entering the map with a black hole.

Ion Storms, Plasma Storms, Gravitational Anomalies, Quantum Filaments, Quantum Fissures, Black Holes, Tykens Rifts, the list goes on and on. Not to mention all the crazy TRIBBLE that could happen on the ground. And honestly, this game needs more "simulation" type things or else it's going to get really old really fast, and is going to be just like every other theme park MMO out there.

Sure, things like Sirius Sector and other high traffic areas should be fine and dandy, but all the other corners of the galaxy should not be 100% safe.

Something I'd like to see is new PvP maps with environmental dangers on 'em, to give players some real strategic options. A map could have a dense swarm of meteoroids and other debris, forcing ships to lower their speed and turning ability. Or there could be a large cloud of some exotic matter that causes havoc with ship systems or something. Another type of cloud could provide a boost to stealth, making it possible to hide in these clouds until the opportune moment.

These things would make PvP even more dynamic and interesting, imo.

P.S.: About the closest we get on most maps, PvP and otherwise, are floating asteroids/structures that a skilled player could temporarily put in between themselves and the opponent, giving them some breathing room. It's nice, but not enough.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.

Like I said before... we COULD have pvp maps with metreon pockets. They are in the game.

Given the tech in Trek ships, you are dead and gone when entering the map with a black hole.

Actually, there is fundamentally not a lot of difference between a black hole and a star, except that the black hole is typically emitting a lot less light. While you could get pushed closer to a star and get damaged by additional radiation, it would be very difficult to "push" someone into a black hole.

In actuality, things orbit very, very close to very, very massive black holes so it is pretty unlikely that you could damage another ship by pushing it closer to a black hole and you could get a lot closer to the center of a black hole than the center of a similar mass star without being destroyed.

EDIT: I should add that black holes, in theory, are not of any physical size although quantum mechanics probably prevents them from being infinitesimally small. Black Holes are usually measured by their Schwarzschild Radius. For a large black hole, the Schwarzschild Radius might be about the size of a small astroid. The accretion disk might be very large.

We even have a PvP map CALLED Briar Patch. But guess what? No Metreon Pockets. :(

If I get pushed into a black hole wouldn't I end up in JJ Abrams trek?

And I really want to do a search-and-rescue mission on the surface of Galorndon Core.

On a side note - five links in one post and not of them to a silly picture or video? Who are you and what'd you do with centersolace?

More random elements like this would be awesome. Apply Season 7's Enterprise-F random encounter tech to as many other bits of content as possible; combat, non-combat, spacial anomalies, easter eggs, wandering merchants, ships named after devs who spit out quotes for no reason and then warp away - whatever. This would be especially great out on the fringes of known space where things are supposed to be unpredictable and just straight-up weird.

I don't know if anyone here played the old Escape Velocity games, but they were filled with randomness like that. Fallout is another example. STO should be doing that too, if only to trigger that Star Trek sense of discovery and Fallout-style watercooler conversation. The tech to make it happen is already there, from what I gather anyway. It just needs more content in it.

Doing this on the sector space level via the Red Alert stuff would be nice too, but those are still really glitchy, so...
    Relax.

I totally agree that the game should have environmental hazards I find the concept of flying directly into a planet and not exploding ridiculous and the same can be said for Asteroids so flying into these should destroy you.

Planet atmospheres could also be expanded so you could use them to detect cloaked attackers

Starfleet Command Games specifically Starfleet Command III had environmental hazards such as stars and black holes and they executed them quite well. The stars were very small but they represented a star and your imagination did the rest if you approached them they would do damage to your shields until they failed and then your crew would start dying and your hull would deteriorate. If this was introduced into STO they could even go down the avenue of Metaphasic Shielding. I would like to see stars introduced as an environmental hazard.

IN SFCIII the black holes were also not very spectacular looking but again they represented the hazard and your imagination did the rest. They had a very strong gravitational pull and once in it only full engines would allow you to escape. In SFCIII Tractor and repulsor mechanics were very different you held your opponent at a certain distance and could drag or push them wherever you wanted which would usually be straight into a black hole and it resulted in insta-death. However tactics that could be applied to STO are disabling the engines of someone in the gravitational pull of a black hole and laugh with evil delight as they are dragged in helpless. Or those facing black holes already hit them with the Gravitic anchor knowing that their reverse engines will never be enough to save them, again insert evil laugh.

Nebulas have been widely used in SFCIII and they kept it simple they had 5 different nebulas and they were easily identifiable each being a different colour. They ranged from depleting shields through sensor blocks to killing crew.

I think all three of these could easily be incorporated into STO
