Antiproton weapons - benefit?

partsourcepartsource Member Posts: 0 Arc User
I am curious as to why many people like Antiproton weapons so much? I go shopping on the exchange and see pricing and availability, as well as seeing them used frequently in STO's. I wanted to have a ship for each weapon type in the game.

They have no apparent 2.5% chance of anything, and their overall look is far too dark red to be believable. Their damage is no better than any other beam array (or cannon).

What makes these so desirable?

You missed that what makes them good.
They have an extra always on bonus to critical severity.

Critical severity has a 20% bonus, and most people only want to be kirks and damage dealers in the game. Extremely overpriced, imo.

They are also the only viable space Borg weapon in my opinion, as they are Mk XII and are effectively [Acc][CrtH][CrtD] monsters that have a 7.5% chance of hitting Borg harder. I love them for my playstyle, love the sound they make when they fire, and with the changes to stf drops, weapons of that caliber are almost impossible to find (or fetch a crazy price only rivaled by something with more Acc mods).

Most people just use their brains and don't want to rely on a lottery to get a (for PvE) useless proc once every three fights.

Not to mention the CritD bonus basically makes them scaling. The more crit chance you have, the more you'll get out of that inherent severity bonus. I wouldn't use them on a cruiser or a sci ship, but on a tac escort, they are simply the hardest hitting weapons by a huge margin. Or at least they were when you could still reasonably obtain them. If you still have a STF set from before S7, you are a lucky person. Right now I wouldn't equip a new ship with AP, purely because the only available ones are from the fleet store with TRIBBLE modifiers or crafted MK XI stuff. But once Cryptic makes them available again, say goodbye to all those plasma builds that are so popular right now.

1.) Antiproton is massively expensive on the exchange because it doesn't drop in the game anymore. If you want antiproton weapons, get them from your fleet store.

2.) Antiprotons are popular because they are reliable. Their ability works on both shields and hulls and scales directly with all your min-maxing attempts to get critical hit chance.

That said, I do not endorse antiproton weapons. They only benefit themselves. Disruptor breaches benefit your non-disruptor energy weapons, your torpedoes, your fighter pets, your team mates...

How exactly would you have a disruptor breach while using non-disruptor energy weapons, without having a rainbow loadout?

I use Antiproton cannons with the [Borg] modifier and I get crits on 7/10 shots I make. They really are the best damage dealing weapons in the game, but as someone else mentioned, their proc doesn't help the team at all (besides shredding hulls).

I prefer CrtH over CrtD, and antiproton weapons don't come in CrtHx3. With my crit severity boosted so much from borg and tachyokinetic consoles and Romulan boffs, CrtH is better for me since my base severity is over 75% already. So I use all Disruptor [CrtH]x3 weapons, works much better for me then AP.

I've been looking for decent AP weapons for a while now and can't find them anywhere.
However, I've noticed on the exchange there are a few Mk XI DHC's with [Acc][CrtD][Dmg] for 30M apiece. There are also a couple of Dual Cannons with [Acc]x2[Dmg] for 15M a pop.
This isn't the first time I've spotted this, every couple of weeks there's a half way desirable full Antiproton set comes on the exchange for ludicrous money.

My question is, where do these weapons come from?
Are they (incredibly rare even then) season 6 drops that someone has been sitting on all this time? Seems unlikely unless someone knew that S7 was going to nerf AP as utterly as it has and stockpiled a few complete sets.
Call me paranoid but it looks like either someone knew something the rest of us didn't or someone is being naughty and drip feeding weapons that they still have access to from some secret location...

I didn't think they were that good against borg. But maybe something has changed since I last played. It used to be everybody used disruptors for borg.

Here's a relevant question: Do disruptor breach procs reduce shield resists, or do they only affect hull resists like all other standard resist debuffs (AP-Beta, FoMM, etc...)?

The non-math skinny of it: Above 8 or so % base crit chance CritD modifiers always produce a bigger damage increase.

Most of those AP weapons you see now are legacy of the old STF store weapons with [BORG] mods. Many people still have these and continue to use them.

With regards to the weapons you see on exchange, they are probably drops from kerrat or STFs. Very rare, but they do drop.

As far as I know there are no antiproton weapon drops of any kind now hence why I am at a loss to explain where they are coming from.

People actually buy anti proton weapons off exchange? I just built an anti proton beam bank fleet research ship, and bought the fleet anti proton banks and turrets, total cost was 80,000 fleet credits and 40,000 dillithium. They are advanced mx 12 dmgx3 accx1 weapons and are pretty killer in stfs and other random pve content.

Why spend literally millions of ec's on exchange weapons when fleet weapons are very good and require far less grind to acquire?

We are a couple of weeks away from reaching engineering tier 2 in our fleet dude, there are only a few of us on regularly.
In saying that, if I understand correctly there are now [Acc]x2 fleet antiprotons when we do finally get there.
    This is good :D
