Changes to the Federation Tutorial

mattgrantmattgrant Member Posts: 57 Arc User
The last time I played the Federation tutorial was about a year ago and while going through it I couldn't help but feel that it had been altered since I first went through it in late 2010/early 2011. The primary difference I noted was that I was unable to pick any one of three npc's to be my first BOFF, instead i was assigned a preset tactical officer. Am I imagining things or was this a change included in the Season Five update? If so, has it been altered since?

On a similar note, I remember Cryptic once stating that they would like to redo the tutorial so that it began at Starfleet Academy. Have they said anything about this recently such as whether it w ill be included in the May update?

It has been altered. You quickly gain the other boffs through early story missions now.

Technically, if you skip the tutorial, you have an academy tutorial. Very short.

They should have it where we fight this evil guy from an unknown place, who wants revenge on Humans, and we beat him, and because we were so awesome they make us instant VA for players with 6 and up alts.

If you skip the tutorial when asked, you are beamed to SFA and are quickly given the tasks to get your ground kit and boff and ship. It basically takes all the useless story bits out of the tutorial.

Is the BOFF still an Andorian (or was it Bolian) Tactical officer? I'm a space racist. I want a human or Vulcan in the very least, maybe a custom alien if I am feeling particularly charitable that day. :D

Yes. I also hate andorian, and always remove them quickly. New boffs are cheap in exchange, or NPC. Also, you'll have a lot of them as you lvlup.
Simply swap her for someone else later, and always remember she never existed in the first place.

It's still an Andorian female. A lot of players end up getting extremely attached to her, which is why you'll see a lot of posts on the forums from players with an Andorian female first officer.

Alrighty then, that's all well and good. But does anyone know about a new Federation tutorial at the Academy? Or is that just a pipe dream?

What's wrong with Anthi? Everbody loves Anthi.

My Anthi went through a midlife crisis and got extremley rotund, but she still kicks people because that's the neat thing to do.

In short: Yes. The first officer is still an Andorian Female named Anthi, like the Klingons and Talash.

I kept my Anthi, although she no longer accompanies me on away missions.

She still sits in my Commander Tac station, though.

    Nothing is confirmed.

But both dstahl and Captain Gecko have recently talked at length about how important a good tutorial is for the continuing growth of the game, so you can bet your soul that there'll be a new one soon. Might as well include it in the May update, so I'm thinking yes.

Inb4 forum rage at dev ressources "wasted" on tutorials when the game is still full of 3 year old bugs.

I agree with the devs, a good tut is no waste at all. Though I'm sure their data will then show a good deal of players will quit the game after 7 or 8 missions when the bulk of the launch storyline missions come which consist of nothing but kill x in orbit, kill y on the ground and then kill z in orbit.

I agree completely with the effect of a good tutorial and it's great that there might be one on the horizon, that's definitely something to get excited for. Until then...KDF.

I've still got the Andorian female First Officer. I may replace her with an identical Purple version though If I can bear to dismiss her.

I've still got my Andorian tactical officer with both of my fed characters, but mine were both named Takeera. If they ever introduce playble captains, or something where I can give my bridge officers a command of their own, I'm so giving her command of my Prometheus MVAE.

Cryptic said a lot off things passed years but even the game evolved some, much work is half done, like the new thollian mission everyone has voices but if you look back on the game before that its still text why they don't inplement it directly with every speaking char on the whole scene it's not that much work is it.

Couple years ago they would inplement somthing on starfleet acedemy so it would feel realy as a acedemy that you would learn something but it's not done.
Same as the patrol missions there still there but unatended.

The new missions they would redo and done also feel there half work so I realy hope they will take care of it someday cause to be short it's a bit off a mess, cryptic clean up the room please :D

Well as new player to STO I have run the tutorial a few times and each time I was completely baffled by the part where you ARE TOLD to talk to the engineering, tactical, and science bridge officer candidates and then find out its a waste of time because the only one you can get is the tactical one....why tell me to talk to all three if only one can be had?

Sloppy conversation is the one thing I hate in MMO's, and I see a lot of that in STO in mission descriptions where I constantly need to ALT TAB to my desktop to find out where a mission is located because the description does not have the information.

It's usually on the mission description, in green, or on the right side of your screen, under the minimap, where the quest tracker is located.
