U.S.S. Challenger: A tribute to the Shuttle Challenger

Hi all,

I'm new to these forums so bear with me, but I'd like to submit an idea for you to mull over. I was looking for pictures of the enterprise on Google when I came across a pic from when STO was designing the new Enterprise. The name on this ship was the USS Challenger NCC-30099, but what really caught my eye was the chevron section. It looked like it could vector into eight pie shaped sections while the drive section still had the main bridge attached. "light bulb" what if each section of this ship was to be named after one member of the shuttle Challenger crew. A perfect tribute to a crew that didn't escape tragedy. the chevron would have to be either 7 or 6 sections to account for each person, and with six, the drive could be named for the captain of this crew. So, what do you think? I wish I could put that picture I saw in this forum so you can see it for your self. I would also want very nice specs on it (if cryptic makes this ship) such as:

Shield Modifier: 1.9

So, what do you think? Am I crazy or would this be an awesome thing for PWE to do in memory and honor of the shuttle Challenger???

(the specs might be a little, A LITTLE, exaggerated)

I would like to thank who ever drew the picture that I saw, and (if cryptic makes this ship) I would ask that this person gets a free one ;)

    If memory serves, Voyager's Timeless interpreted Geordi LaForge in command of the Galaxy-class, USS Challenger. This was an alternate timeline. But still something to build from.

    Otherwise, STO player's name their own starships in homage to many things. Sometimes, I name my small fleet of shuttlecraft in honor of the space program.

    Ignoring how crass the idea would be... You know, you can make something ridiculously OP without crazy numbers. For example:

    Atrox's hull
    1.1 shield modifier
    turn rate 9
    4/4 weapons, can equip cannons
    4 devices
    second LTC without losing the ensign
    3/3/5 consoles


    That ship would be farther out of balance than any of the 3 packs with their set bonuses, but it has no single advantage that's unprecedented, only combining every advantage it can find while skipping the associated disadvantages.

    Why not just make a "I win button" that appears on your screen when you fly the ship? Better yet make it a console. Oh dont forget, if thats too easy, why not make it so when a ship aggro's you, it has a 99% chance of using self destruct?

    Ship idea, Decent. Stats, Nonononononono. There is no need for anyone to have such an overpowered ship. SIX commander stations? What?

    The stats should be more like a Fed destroyer. Too bad the Chel Grett stole the boff layout.

    I believe I know the ship your talking about.

    If its this one: USS Phoenix

    The artist wanted to submit it to the Enterprise contest but couldn't because he lives in the UK.

    Personally I think it would make a great destroyer hull. Make it about the same size as the Chimera and use the slices as the customization points for variants.

    The STO lore missions show he got that assignment in this timeline too.:)

    In all seriousness, I would love to see some ships in the game named after the Shuttles Challenger and Columbia.

    As I posted above, there is already a Challenger-class and was seen in TNG as one of the ships of Wolf 359.

    Though there is room for a Columbia-class.

    I am sorry, let me clearify. I am not talking about player ship class name. I mean NPC ship name. Also the comment about the Columbia was a joke about the Destiny books.

    you guy didn't get why I'm doing this. All I want is something in game to honor the Challenger crew. I could care less about the stats, so long as PWE makes it a really nice ship to catch everyone's eye and not be a laugh off. this ship is to honor the lives of the crew, nothing more.

    I could do a Columbia class and name the vectors after that crew, as long as this multi-vector ship is named for one of the shuttles

    but I want the pie shapes to vector off and be independent "fighters" like the Prometheus (which is an escort)

    I just found out who drew up the picture I saw. his name is Mark Kingsnorth, and you can visit his web site at www.markkingsnorth.com to see the ship that I saw. I just wanted to say thank you, Mark, for drawing this picture and allowing people like me to have a chance to see it. I really would be honored, if PWE took Mark's picture and my idea and made it reality in STO; and, Mark, if your on STO I hope you get the first of this amazing line for free ( if PWE decides to build it). btw, Mark named the ship class the Insignia. look for it in his gallery and tell him what you think, please.

    Each of the NASA "disasters" have already been memorialized within Star Trek canon, even if they don't catch attention at first glance.

    Apollo 1

    USS Grissom (Star Trek III)
    Shuttlecraft Chaffee (DS9: The Sound of Her Voice)
    Ed White's mission patch (along with a patch for all other Apollo missions) appears in the 602 Club in the ENT episode "First Flight".

    Apollo 13

    The motto for Starfleet Academy is a minor variation of the latin phrase which adorned the mission patch for Apollo 13.

    USS Odyssey (DS9: The Jem'Hadar) is named for the Command Service Module for Apollo 13, which suffered a catastrophic explosion during a routine oxygen cycling.

    STS-51L Challenger

    USS Challenger (VOY: Timeless, Endgame) was given the name in honor of the Space Shuttle Challenger's catastrophic failure 28 January 1986

    STS-107 Columbia

    Earth Starship Columbia NX-02 is named for the Space Shuttle Columbia and it's final mission which saw it destroyed over Texas, 1 February 2003. The Columbia NX-02 Mission Patch features 7 stars in the background, in honor of the Space Shuttle Columbia's mission patch, which also featured 7 stars, 1 star for each member of the flight crew.

    Columbia is OV-102 and the Challenger is OV-099. You listed the missions of their.......final flights.

    Yes, because I was talking about the specific "disaster" missions, not the spacecraft themselves. The reason for their memorium within canon is not specifically tied to the spacecraft itself, but rather to the tragedy which occured. It's memorium to event, rather than equipment.

    In the path to 2409 it states that Geordi LaForge took command of a Galaxy class USS Challenger. Trying to commemorate the crew of the Challenger is admirable, but this just seems like a rediculous and way over powered design.

    You should. Because those stats make this look like nothing but a crass use of tragedy for gain. I'd drop the request to get one free for yourself, too, because even if it's unique and not OP, that still makes it look as bad.

    like I said before, I wanted to do something in memory of these space pioneers. the only reasons way I want good stats is so it won't be laughed off the game stage.

    I'm also considering using a couple other of Mark Kingsnorth's ships for a three pack bundle to appease Eng. & Sci. officers as well. look for Mark's Ascension class (cruiser) and his Eaves class (science ship) in addition to the Insignia class (Columbia escort) at www.markkingsnorth.com

    I never asked for a free one for myself. I asked PWE to give Mark a free one if he's on STO, that's all. never once did I say anything about me. this is all for the memory of the shuttle crews (which ever one is used)
