The Vesta comes with cannons powered by Auxiliary power level. It's meant to allow the ship to have useful firepower while performing science at the same time. Diverting full power to auxiliary to use science and the aux cannons will leave your weapon power badly depleted, making turrets offer very little damage. You don't lose much by replacing a rear mounted turret with a rear mounted beam array to swing around and sting enemies with subtarget attacks when they become available. Also the drain factor of subtargeting attacks is not dictated by your weapon power level, meaning subtargeting performance is not impacted by having full power to auxiliary.

There is no conflict of design here.

I am well aware of what an auxiliary cannon does. I am well aware that weapons power settings do not affect increased drain. I don't even know why you brought that up. Drain is due to flow stats, the Ensign level captain attribute if memory serves.

The lack of aux powered rear turrets or beams has already been argued and basically I agree they aren't needed. The Vesta doesn't need to be another pew pew escort. Throw mines on it. Rear torps. Turrets or beams. Or better, use my suggestion to have all beams on cruisers or science vessels fire from phaser emitter strip segment per Star Trek TNG canon so cruisers and science ships can fire all their beams 360. Sure would solve a problem.

But there is a conflict of design. If someone builds a ship all the integral features should work together in a cohesive manner. If the aux cannons are designed to work with the Vesta and it is equipped with the standard science ship subsystem targeting then they should work together as well. It isn't hard or unreasonable to understand this basic logic.

I think alot of ship abilities shouldn't be tied into BoFF abilities. It just doesn't make sense that unless my Tactical officer has targeting abilities or attack patterns assigned, he all of a sudden can't do any of them. They should take a few lessons from previous games like Starfleet Command & Bridge Commander.

I think I should be able to fire constant volleys of torpedoes but maybe at the sacrifice of weapon power and execute attack patterns without having to have it as a set ability. Also a very simple ship function like being able to target different systems on an enemy ship should be available to all ships without having to take up a BoFF ability.

This game needs some major revamps IMO.

They do work together in a cohesive fashion. The default ship build is Aux Cannon, Beam, Torp, therefore you can get the best of all the powers straight out of the box. If you change it from the design, you miss out. Granted you miss out on DPS but that's the trade off you make with subsystem targeting anyway.

As someone else said, beams are precision instruments cannons are made for damage.
