I know that the free version is lacking but those that crunch numbers: Is it worthy for PVP or is it something that should be passed on?
There are a lot of new ships coming out soon but man, a lot of them are just for show. I am contemplating on waiting until the ship that has more than a total of 8 weapons on it comes out per DStahl in the February Ask Cryptic.
As a sci cruiser, the base Amby is actually alright in pvp, although it's not up to the level of fleet ships (that's why there's a fleet version). It presents a number of options you wouldn't have outside of a recluse, but is far more nimble than the recluse. It's what the fleet exploration retrofit *should* have been, but wasn't, and I have high hopes for the fleet version rounding out its rough edges and giving a solid performance.
Now, while this is a cruiser with sci powers, you really need to resist the urge to play it like a sci ship. It isn't. Don't run those offensive engineering powers and be a wizard, it won't work very well. Instead take advantage of the LTC sci slot to buff your defenses or healing- hazard emitters is useful for healing as always, but you can also invest in higher grades of transfer shield strength, or doff enhanced options like charged particle burst and the placate.
Even though it's fairly nimble for a cruiser, it's no battlecruiser, and keeping targets in your fore arc for even a little while is going to be very problematic without the right setup - and the right setup is a waste of the ship's talents, IMO.
With that in mind, any sort of forward arc powers you should stay away from, and instead focus on broadsiding and heals and the like.
I think it's very nice ship. I would love to fly it....if it was Galaxy. That lt.cmd offers the ship unique healing/tanking possibilities.
"Cryptic Studio’s Jack Emmert (2010): Microtransactions are the biggest bunch of nonsense. I like paying one fee and not worrying about it – like my cellphone. The world’s biggest MMO isn’t item based, even though the black market item GDP is bigger than Russia … microtransactions make me want to die.”

Have you played around with an Ambassador using SCs/Turrets/Chrons while using a TB, AtD, EPtE, mixed in with EM? Or an AtB build dropping the AtD/EPtE while spamming MAS'd EWP with the TB?
I think people are taking the "Support" aspect too literally with this ship. They're thinking of it as a "Healing Support" ship and overlooking the potential for "Fire Support"... it's no Regent nor Excelsior, but unlike those - swap BOFFs/gear and you could be that "Healing Support" or "Fire Support"... it's a pretty nifty multirole cruiser in one package.
You can do a lot of things with it, but a foreward cannons/torp, rear turrets aux2bat imitation battlecruiser is going to be a waste of the ship, especially with the sci LTC.
You can do a more tactically focused cruiser if you slot in the appropriate skills- feedback pulse, tractor beam repulsors- stuff that does not require you to line an enemy up dead center in your forward arc to do. For pve, sure, slap on whatever, but as a cruiser with a somewhat laborious turn arc, you're going to want powers that you can fire off at any angle, rather than one specific narrow angle.
Although I suppose you could try and pretend to be a dreadnought with MES1 and a bunch of rommie cloak boffs.
But that's one of those 'specific' builds I was referring to.
Hell, you can even stick Photonic Shockwave on it if you care to, which can be amusing enough, if not really having enough range IMO to be useful.
I thought the free version wasn't bad. I will be back in game in a few hours. Can't wait to pick up the fleet version to help me with my papal campaign.

I respectfully disagree. I had the T5 free version in a few Elite STF's when I first got it as an all cannon build and not only did I hold my own but guarded the time gate alone in one particular Elite STF and destroyed both probes and spheres happily by myself. It's so close to my fleet Excel in terms of performance that honestly, despite whatever difference exists on paper the two ships both perform similarly imo. The Fleet Bassy should narrow this gap even further, particularly in lieu of the tac friendly slots!
Food for thought.
Edit: Forgot that this was a PVP thread... in saying that, I have also seen these ships in PVP doing very well! Its all about build and skill...

You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." - Rocky Balboa (2006)

It won't be more than 8 you crazy guy he said more than 4 fore
To implement more than 8 they would have to dramatically change the game mechanics and power limitations ship wise
