Actually, I think the game has a lot of life left. I just got back on after a six month technical furlow (laptop needed work). However, I maintained my subscription, and was determined to get back on as soon as possible. I am always excited by the prospect of new weapons, ships, equipment, species, missions, and costumes.

Furthermore, the game costs nothing - literally, you can download it for free and play for free. Some services and options require money or a paid subscription, but they are well worth the $15 a month.

Though some may suggest that this game is dying, especially with the recent nerf to TCDs (KHAAAAAN!!!!), I feel that the dev team is really working hard to make this the best MMO of all time.

Oh, and it wouldn't have one Players Choice Best Free-to-Play MMO of 2012 if it was a dying game. That distinction is reserved for WoW.

It may have had more meaning if it was a known site, wasn't spamable and reflected anything of meaning, but it did none of those things.

What is known about the game, is it has lots of bugs, has long periods between content updates, has an Ep with a track record of not being totally honest with its player base and a bad habit of putting in things that get exploited, then ******** at the player base for doing so. (hello IOR I'm looking right at you)

is the game dying? I don't know, I do know its reputation, isn't that good, the Dev team has an established history of communications problems, Systematic QA failures and failure to deliver on things they promised over and over.

    Thats, what I know.

I recently just started free to play because I was in Neverwinter testing and I noticed STO was also a PWE game so being a Trekie and never having tried STO I decided to give it a go.

From what I can tell the game has a very strong and active player base and so far I have enjoyed every minute of my time spent playing STO.

Now if only I could figure out how to get back to my ship from Starfleet Academy!

Anyone giving "making money" or "hyping the next release which is right around the corner" or a strong fanbase need only look to last August and the fall of City of Heroes.

I'm not saying it is dead, it sure doesn't seem like it to me, but I've been badly burned once and now assume every game is as ephemeral as dandelion seeds on the wind. Enjoy it while you can.

    No.

People do not argue this much over something thats dead unless inheritence is involved.

    You think STO is dead?

    HAHAHAHAHAHA.

No, instead, come over to their sister game, Champions Online. Now THAT is dead.

I'll let you start with the patch notes of the two games:

I wouldn't say STO is dead, or even dieing. As with pretty much any MMO it has it's fair share of problems, but, from what I've seen, STO does have a fairly strong and stable player-base.

There are now so many MMO's available that it becomes somewhat difficult for developers to come up with new ideas to attract new players. I believe there's also a large number of players who are constantly shifting from one MMO to another in the hopes of finding some sort of "Holy Grail" of MMO's. New MMO's get way too much hype, people start calling them the latest "WoW-killer" etc, but when the game fails to live up to all the hype a lot of players leave and then start claiming the game is dieing or dead etc.

I tend not to take too much notice of the "doom-sayers", instead I just get on with playing the games I like. ;)
    Playing STO since August 2010
    Playing Neverwinter since July 2014

This game is far from dead or dying but there are a few bad signs appearing that the devs want to take the game a different route to the fans. See the 14th patch which is a complete shambles.
Me I play enjoy and will continue, but yesterday I cancelled my Gold membership and will not buy anymore Zen,.........

I understand from the original post that the poster is worried about STO being all about "endless grinding" to get things that "Don't have a point"

Well surely you could take the same perspective with most games - its all in the mentality you have when you play it. Newcomers to Star Trek lore can explore on their own for a while and learn a little about why the fans love the whole Trek universe. It's not all about blowing things up. You're part of a huge ever expanding universe that has something for everyone.

Like was previously mentioned, the Foundry is chock-full of awesome stories that can take anywhere from an hour to 3 or more, and all are written by people who know what they're doing and understand that not everybody wants a lasery-explosion-fest.

So by all means, give it a try, its free to play anyway, and who knows, you might meet some new mates :)

I do not know much about Neverwinter and so forth, but with this coming out and the sheer dissatisfaction of the gaming audience I must ask, is this game finally dead. I pose this because people may be thinking of spending money on the game and if this is the case they should avoid doing so.
The only new experience material that has come out for ages was a very short side mission with a brief gimmick voice over. Everything seems to be a waste of money in this game, or time if you grind, because theres nothing to actually aim for. I wouldnt mind making my ship great if there was some point, some enemy or so on, but theres nothing save the abyss of grind.
I base this mostly on my own sentiments, but also on the constant dissatisfaction and disappointment voiced by so many in the game.

Sure is dead.Sci Fi star trek fans cant wait to play a fantasy WoW type of game. *facepalm*
