Considering you only need a handful of abilities to tank anything in PvE, none of which are captain abilities. Anybody who complains about a tac in anything, are probably not worth listening to.
It's true you can tank with none captain abilities and be fairly good at it but it's the captain abilities that make you excel at a role, which is critical to not dying on the higher difficulties and keeping your team consistently safe.
A Tac character can do good Dps and do it with beams in a cruiser, With aceton beam 3 you can stop 75% of incoming energy damage for 30 seconds
You can run 2 copys of aux to bartteries and maintain hig power levels
If you pick a fleet excelsior you have 4 tactical consoles
and you can have a lot of fun watching noobs in escorts blow up in the pugs
Overall your main mission is to have fun you can MORE than pull your weight in any team as a tac in a cruiser with a good build and a little skill and common sense

Im all done my PvE grinding on both toons now, but when I was farming ESTFs and Rom marks, it just really frustrated me when people dont have the firepower to get objectives or optionals done. The argument that they need warp plasma for emergencies if theres noobs in the team is moot because if the noobs were educated and built proper ships, you wouldnt need EWP. Fine, even if you did feel you need it, use a en escort that has a lt com engineer. Theres a few out there now. Why not a gravity well? Grav well works beautifully by pulling everything together, so that when you kill one thing, the warpcore explosions cascade and kill eachother. The MVAM and Breen ship can do this.
I dont worry about dying because I build ships like hereticknight does. The only thing that kills me is if Im looking the other way and a critical torpedo hits.
I love science ships and they were all I would use when I first started. I thought I was bringing something useful to the table. Nonsense, I can bring an escort and kill the probes/weavers in a single volley. Why would I waste time using DoT abilities or using beams that would take twice as long. I think cryptic has learned from this and thats why the Hive is so much different than the others. Its an actual boss battle.
Really... Tac Captains can use cruisers just fine. Probably better for PvP in some instances. But what they lose is a minor shield heal and Miracle Worker.
So you sacrifice some self heals for damage resist debuffs. But you also, less importantly, lose a quick power transfer power and Nadion Inversion which helps for BO. Not a big loss.
Fly it your way.
A Science captain would be just as good in a Cruiser too. I just prefer to keep my heals maxed so I go Engineer, but its my preference.
Nothing is wrong with a tac in a cruiser (as long as they've optimised their DPS and not doing PvP) and as far as STFs go it's preferable to an engineer in a cruiser.
Of course at the end of the day they'd do much better in an escort, but then so would everyone.
If they're doing PvP and optimised for DPS, they'll die a quick death.
I got fed up flying escorts, I have 3 other toons that do this. The escorts are like sports cars screaming around shouting 'look at me, look at me, look at meeee' I like the laid-back nature of the cruiser, no worries i'll get there later then you but I'll do my job when i get there... chillll.
It is optimized for tactical STF. so the Lt commander uni slots are used for Tac boff. I still have enough room for reverse shield polarity, tac team, hazard emitters etc. Fleet anti proton beams and wide quantums top the whole thing off.
Monkey see, Monkey do. Monkey flings Feathered Monkey poo...
Tac captain in a fed cruiser can do decent dps, but it takes lots of experience and expensive gear and doffs to pull it off. The builds to do it are a little more complicated then average cruiser builds, as it needs an aux2bat build to do it.
Even a new tac captain with cheap gear like blue/white mk xi can still do decent dps though so is better most of the time.

Agreed. My consoles are mainly XI purples. I'm still perfecting boff layouts. I can take on a borg cube solo doing KASE quite easily, in fact I've actually had escort captains say to me they are surprised how much damage i could do.
I think a lot of these threads OMG nerf tacs! Come from cruiser captains that don't know their own ships. I'd love to get their game handles and run it through Gateway to see if I'm right.

I think one problem is most players choose the Sovvy as their free level 40 ship. I did as a new tac too because I wanted the Enterprise like most people did. It wasn't long before I figured I needed an escort, especially until I got better gear. So I ended up having to buy a z-store defiant to make Elite STF easier.
Fortunately there are mirror escorts now so easy for most new tacs to correct their mistake.
You don't need to be a tac to take things out quickly. You just need to know what your ship can and cannot do.
My Eng in his Tac Oddy can level a cube in about 30-45 seconds (depending on how many crits I get), and in my Imperial, can do it in 35 seconds max. Just gotta know which buffs to use when, and where to attack the bugger from. Also helps that you can make it's own torps hit it (that one is just for fun though).
But my tac in it's Imperial is a nasty PvE beast. My fleet defiant can slaughter things like a madman (current record on a cube with sub-par gear is 32 seconds, with better gear was closer to 18), but tbh it's just far more entertaining out-dpsing tacscorts with my Imperial.
But I still say, it's more efficient to use the escort.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
Attack Pattern Alpha gives a turn rate buff along with the damage stuff. Very good for cruisers.
Tactical Initiative sets your tactical boff powers to global cooldown (15 seconds). More useful for cruisers since they have less tactical boffs.
Just two things to think on among all the other information in this thread.
I use a Regent and love it. The wide angle quantum torpedo is amazing since I don't have to turn much to get off a Torpedo Spread. It is fast enough to not be frustrating and most importantly to me it doesn't twitch around like a squirrel on drugs that escorts are.

It is through repetition that we learn our weakness.
A master with a stone is better than a novice with a sword.
Has damage got out of control?
This is the last thing I will post.
