Its a complete surprise to beginners like me to discover that your points are locked at lvl 50. Even on second ship, it was very hard to project the points distribution, being careful and thinking ahead. Kind of irritating that I have to buy credits to correct this. One freebie at lvl 50 would be nice--you are locked but we will let you shuffle around a little, you'll have to buy if you want to do it again so get it right.
No, sheesh I don't know why ppl keep wanting things for free and don't want to work for it. Free healthcare, free money from unemployment benefits. Gosh.. go work for it, lazy bum!
500 zen is not tough to get. Play 8 stfs everyday and wait for 5 days and get that respec token.
Otherwise, buy some zen using your money and help contribute keeping the game alive.
Lot of assumptions being made in here, maybe I gave them money already, you people dont know anything about what I do or dont do. Simple fact is you hit the cap because of arbitrary design decision and there is nothing you can do to correct. No backing out of skills or anything. If they are going to lock you down, they should provide a chance for you to correct it, pretty simple.
F2P as an acronym needs to be properly represented better, perhaps? Sets up some people for failure, it seems.
"But it's free... to play?"
"Only up to a point."
"But it says free to play and it's f2p!"
"F2P is just to get you to come into the game and see if you like it enough to spend money on it."
"But it's free... to play."

I have never paid a single cent to play this game. I only pay when I want the extras.
Some of you should really stop bashing PWE, if not because of them, STO and Cryptic would have sank with Atari.
Also, stop asking for free stuff.. only beggars do that.
Well, I personally don't mind doing the grind to get the zen for a respec. However, I do wish Cryptic had made it a little clearer from the start that we couldn't go ahead and fill up skilltrees, and that any change would require a zen token.
The first fact is that skill lock is arbitrary. We know this because they have tokens that let you change it without any trouble. Second fact is they dont care if you change skills often--gold members get respec tokens every 10 levels, and they sell more tokens online, please change the skills often so you buy the tokens often. Okay? It is easy to change and they dont care about the change.
The lock only exists as a gating mechanism, a funnel.
And I dont even care about that. I would just like to have a chance to review the skills before it is locked. One respec at lvl 50 seems reasonable. If I want to tweak every week, I'll buy more. I dont like finding out my skills are locked in a weird pattern, and nothing I can do except pay blackmail.

You missed the point here...why does a respec token have to cost $5? Why not $3?
Why does Subway have a 5$ foot-long?
Oh, wait... it's now 6$!
Guess they just want to get paid.:(

Yea I'm an LTS, thats because i felt that this game would be worth my time and i earn enough dough to splurge. I liked this game during beta, so I got myself the LTS.
But that doesn't hide or distort the fact that the entire game is completely free. You even get access to all the new missions (e.g. starbases, new romulus, stfs, foundry, FEs, PVP) FREE. Heck, you even get some new ships for free.
You only need to ever pay for new ships, some lobi items, costumes, extra inventory slots (FYI the standard free inventory slots are plenty!). Notice that even lockbox items can be bought through the exchange.
I think this community shouldn't keep branding PWE chinese money grubbing, etc. They're pretty decent in their "greed".
Look at the greed of our American counterpart: EA, Activision-Blizzard, Turbine?
Torchlight 2 = $20 bucks vs Diablo 3 = $80 bucks!
STO = Pay for extras vs SWTOR = Pay for everything vs LOTRO = Pay for content
I think this community shouldn't keep branding PWE chinese money grubbing, etc. They're pretty decent in their "greed".
Yeah, agree with what you are saying.
STO is very generous in it's offering of a F2P experience and I for one am not complaining.
Good points raised btw.

It's not that it is $5... it is that things are changed so often (buffed/nerfed) that it is not $5.
Were it $5 if somebody felt like doing it, it would not be as bad. With it being $5 because Cryptic did something, that is another story.
Also, there's more behind it than that...
Besides, the $5 is obviously not an actual cost - it's a convenience/emotional surcharge. You can buy two toon slots for $6.25. You can sub for $15 on a new account, and with the three characters you could rack up 23 retrain tokens - a $115 value? That's not including the other upgrades that you can get and keep from a single month of Gold when starting out an account. Of course, you can't do this for your 50s by going Gold - it's not retroactive.
So obviously, the cost of running that stored procedure is nowhere near $5. But even so, the $5 would not be that bad if it were a case of the player deciding they wanted to do something different...it's entirely different when Cryptic makes that decision and then charges them $5 for it.
Lots of folks would just reroll rather than pay the $5. Cryptic's taken steps to curb that. Single character ship and gear unlocks - but that wasn't enough - so they added reputation grinds.
So again, if it were just a $5 charge - if none of the rest existed nor was taking place, then it wouldn't really be that bad. But all the rest does exist and is taking place...it's slimy, it's extortion...
...and now it's time to go farm more Dil to convert to Zen somebody paid cash for (yes, in farming Dil we're working at way below minimum wage to generate a product Cryptic can sell) so that I can pay for my respec tokens because I can no longer put it off because of the accumulated changes since Nov for a couple of toons.
Besides, the $5 is obviously not an actual cost - it's a convenience/emotional surcharge.
True, they simply charge that much because they can. Just look at WoW. The respecs are free and they have dual specs (which STO desperately needs IMO), but look at what Blizzard charges for additional services? They already make you pay a monthly fee and you have to buy the expansions. Changing a name costs 10 bucks. Want to transfer to another realm because the one you're on is dying? 25 bucks, per character. And there's no way to earn that ingame.
There are things I don't like about STO and free-to-play in general, but if you're clever you can get most of the goodies in STO without paying a dime and with very little grinding. If that means I have to pay 500 Zen for the occasional respec, that's okay.
When was Diablo 3 ever 80 bucks? Blizzard sold the digital download for $60 at launch, and many retailers offered it for less. Also, Diablo 3 probably cost at least three times as much to develop as Torchlight 2. That doesn't make D3 the better game, but still...
STO is very generous in it's offering of a F2P experience and I for one am not complaining.
STO gives you more for free then any other F2P MMO out there that I've tried.
If you sub for 1 month it's even a better deal because that unlocks all the inventory slots, boff slots, ect...
There is really nothing you need to pay for in this game, all the content, ships ect... everything you need is free. The only stuff that costs money is fluff items or ships that you really don't need even for Elite STF's.
I'm not sure if they do this here, because I've not see any real change in the skill trees, but if they do make major changes I think a free respec would be appropriate, they do this already in CO.

All of this.
I have a pile of respecs on all three of my toons, but I have a paid account. Funny that.
When the game stopped requiring paid accounts and went free to play, they had to decide what people would have to pay for. Content hidden behind pay walls? The ability to earn XP at a reasonable rate? Competitive endgame gear? Nope, none of those things most F2P MMOs charge for that TRIBBLE over the free players. Instead, it's mostly prestige items and services. $5 for a respec is not that big a deal, and you could've avoided most of the need by following a high rated build on STO Academy even if you had no idea what you're doing.
Also to answer the previous question, when the skill tree was revamped for Season 5, everybody was given a free respec. There's really no choice at that point, some of the skills no longer existed/got consolidated/radically changed function. Simple nerfs and buffs during game balance passes would not be enough to warrant a free respec for everybody though.
Why not $1? Why not $10? Everything has to cost something. Somebody won't like any price.
The $5 for a respec token is so....arbitrary.We can understand why we have to pay $20 for a ship, there are development costs attached to it.....but a respec token? What justifies the $5 price tag on that?
And to all that keep rambling on about Dilithium for Zen.....yes it is an option,we have all heard the arguments before, you don't have to keep repeating yourself like a broken record.
The PWE/Cryptic sweatshop...not where the game is made, but where the game is played!
Take back your home, end the grind!

But you'd never know, because it would take 20 years to write, and they wouldn't be able to afford forums. Or a licensed IP.
