there are night time settings. also the qo'nos under siege backdrop is pretty grim. not sure you can make it that dark though unless you throw in a map wide effect like smoke.
these are accessed by clicking on a free section on a map and down the bottom changing the background.
cant do a whole heap with interior maps though other than selecting a map wide effect.
There is no way to affect the lighting inside as such though certain backdrops also include map wide effects. The "Barge of the Dead" map (not the proper name, can't recall that but shows in the description--the one with the boat) has a kind of eerie fog.
Wasn't there a way to build outside a of a space station map? In the dark section.
Yes, BUT, it uses the same lighting style as if you were inside.
I managed to make my underground map in Darkness between the Stars that way by adding dark particle effects, but my trick for making the walls dark was to choose a backdrop with lighting that clashed with the color of the walls. IE, I used a backdrop that had primarily green lighting(TRD..something) in a map that didn't reflect that color. The TRD backdrop isn't particularly dark, it's about mid-range, but the way it interacted with the purple cave walls made the walls look almost black. I tossed in some black-ish particle effects to add a bit more gloom.
I was hoping to use DS9 as a backdrop for this story. Building a set from scratch using the outdoor lighting is not a problem, but I have significant issues with cardassian set pieces. Federation pieces are a lot easier to work with. A change is all that is needed.
By "backdrop" do you mean the set? You can use a different Cardassian interior and simply say it's a different deck than the main promenade. IIRC, there's one named "Trivas Empok Nor". Empok Nor was a space station of the same design as DS9(aka Terok Nor) that the Cardassians built in the Trivas system. There's probably a few Cardassian interiors.
There are two generic Cardassian interiors. One with props and one with no props. There's also a Cardassian Ministry of something, but I think thats more meant to be a ground installation.
Of course, what maps are "meant" to be and what we can turn them into with some well-placed objects are two very different things...
I'll have to play around with everyone's ideas. It just can't be a truly psychological thriller with smiles and sunshine.
One thing that I've found recently. I'm working on building a custom interior in the space above the Starbase 39 interior at a height of about 50, and the lighting is very dark. I think I have it set to the DS9 interior backdrop.

Inside - no idea.
I'm starting my Halloween mission.
I built the set on an exterior ground map, up in the sky, with a night backdrop.

Might be an option for you.
