Did I make a Mistake of putting points into wrong area?

My Main is a FED Engineer Toon. But I put most of my points into Space Tactical area.

Was that a bad mistake? Or does it not really matter.

It depends ENTIRELY on what areas you put your points into.

Most captains will have at least some of every area.

For instance, there are likely very few who will not have some points in Starship Weapons Training, Warp Core Efficiency, Warp Core Potential, Structural Integrity and Shield Systems.

You would need to post more, and you would need to tell us what precisely you want to do with them (if you even have an idea), for an assessment to really be made. So far as "space" goes the areas are VERY generalized in terms of what profession they belong to.

Not a problem at all, I did the same thing. it actually works out great if you want to do more damage rather than tank and heal. It sets you up to possibly be good in an Assault Cruiser, Ferengi D'Kora or Breen Chel'Grett. All maneuverable somewhat escort/cruiser hybrids (especially Chel'Grett) . There are some downsides however. As an engineer, putting skill points into engineering skills allows you to train in certain things such as eject warp plasma III, Engineering Team III, Phaser Turret III, etc. The only thing you really want to avoid putting skillpoints into is science skills. There's only a few that will effect you. These are Shield Emitters, Shield System and possibly Inertial Dampeners. Do not put a single point into any of the others. (Graviton generator and particle generator possibly if you're running a sci ship with Gravity Well)

Regarding science skills - power insulators may also be worthwhile, as it protects against energy drains.

Yes, that could be a usefull skill to put points into primarily if you're into PvP though.

I have found that the only two times that this tends to happen outside of PvP is when facing the Breen and the Borg Tractor beam. The breen space set gives a bonus to this area, as does the MACO set for the borg. So this may be useful until you get those sets. However, once you aquire those sets, the bonuses from those should suffice.
