I've seen that on TrekBBS as well, and from his WIP screenshots, it's clear that he's modelling every last water valve and conduit and outfitting every room, using an antiquated version of 3DS Max. Also bear in mind that it's intended more for rendering than real-time gameplay.
So. nice and detailed as it is, how much gameplay value would all of that be? How would Cryptic monetize it?
Hence the proposal centersolace and I have written (see sig for details), which simplifies things by:
- focusing on basic facilities like bridge, ready room, sickbay, engineering, shuttlebay etc (forget about Ensign Ricky's quarters)
- each major class has a fixed canonical deck/room layout
- limited decor options for doors, corridors, walls and LCARS panels (2409 A/B/C/D plus C-store canon variants)
- mini-games, FE remastering, Trek TV episode-like "shipboard encounters" missions, PvP and PvE boarding action arenas
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.
I like the idea of using Foundry custom maps for more than just missions. Creating custom ship interiors would be fun. As would creating custom PvP arenas.
Would be nice if Season 9 came with customizable ship interiors. Would be nice to expand on the interiors of lockbox ships and add appropriate bridges and interiors to alien ships like the D'Kyr and Atrox.

Yes puh-lease! You could make several seasons worth of content out of ship interiors!

I would sooo love that! Give us the ability to curve the layouts in accordance with the selected ship as well. Add in decks for shuttlebays, the captain's yacht (even if you can't use it), and the Aquarius destroyer if you're in an Odyssey (and it's Klink counterpart) too. Heck, throw in a battle bridge for ships with saucer separation capability.

All covered in the proposal

I actually went through and read that whole thread last night... (took about three hours)
(yes, I know, a waste of time..., but it's colder than a witches butt around here and I was bored)
That is absolutely amazing, the amount of work He has put into it...
It was also an interesting read about the ups & downs of His life over the last three years.
Can't wait to see the completed project.

Having a better STAR TREK GAME brings in more STAR TREK FANS,
there is already a huge C-Store, a Subscription System and LockBoxes for them to spend lots of money on.
I see no reason why every single new thing needs to be monetized into oblivion.
The real question is, how does this make STO a better game?
As long as these are empty rooms without interactive elements and without my BOffs and DOffs faces walking around my Ship in the Uniforms i selected for them...
then there is really no more reason to it than there is to the LockBox bridges that have every single interactive thing crammed into one room.
I am sure one day there will be a game like that where i can walk around this ship (or another) from top to bottom with full interactive elements, more like a Starship Simulator than a pew pew Hotkey smasher MMO.
But STO is not it, Cryptic does not have the resources, the Talent or the Engine to pull something like this off.
The Constitution & Belfast bridge packs are the level of quality I would like to see on every Starship interior. It's the way it should have been done, would have been done, if not for camera control issues. The Constitution pack was a trial run, to see if proper scaled interiors could feasibly be done. The success of the pack allowed for the Deep Space Nine pack to be created and sold, and in turn will allow for other series theme packs to be developed down the road.

My sarcasm detector is on the fritz again.
The thread was simply for feedback, whilst the cream of the crop, the gem, the shiny dilithium crystal in the rough is the proposal document itself (20~30 minutes reading).
I've also only played for a little over a year, and I've certainly not been dumping my personal matters on the board, if that's what you're implying.
EDIT: Nevermind, just found out you were referring to the TOS Ent interior thread on 3D Buzz. My bad, Dave :P

The Bridge Commander days, IMHO, are dead - save for niche modding groups.
A MMO that uses an F2P model must derive revenue from vanity items, costumes and services. Somebody still needs to pay to keep the servers running, the lights in the offices, dev salaries, the coffee in the break room...
The argument is that the correct deck/room layouts for each major ship class are FREE, along with some 2409 decor variants - if one wants CANON decor variants like on the TV show, we ought to pay for the priviledge of getting Cryptic to do the extra work.

Sorry Sumghai, but Dave is talking about the thread mentioned in the OP not the Interior Development thread. :P
I've always found it jarring to have a Klingon Style Bridge and interior on an Orion Ship. It just doesn't look right, which is why I avoid the bridge and interior like the plague.
But than again all the Orions, including bridge officers in this game talk and act like Klingons anyways.

I honestly believe that starship interiors should be your own personal mini-adventure zone.
I've raised some questions as a follow-up to the original thread, to gauge interest in the idea.

It can be used on any standard Federation ship.
