I've seen all sorts of folks complain about the lock boxes...
"I don't like it, I hate it, I want them gone" etc., etc.
I too am somewhat annoyed by how many drop and I've become accustomed to ignoring them and only nabbing items that aren't food or boxes and so I have this proposal:
Please give us the option to turn off boxes, ie: make it a general option under Game Options to "Turn Off Box Drop" so that you'll never have to see them again!
Please o' please enable this feature devs. I for one would LOVE to see something like this.
And while I'm at it, I would also love to see another option under the Chat Options that allow us to disable those "so and so just picked up TRIBBLE ship for completing this or that". I honestly don't care what others accomplish and truthfully feel that the global spam is not only unnecessary but blatantly irritating.
This saves Cryptic a lot of time they can use to actually improve the game instead of adding some cosmetic nonsense because people accidently loot lockboxes.
Even if you accidently looted boxes: you can discard them for free.

Will never happen, not as long as they can make money selling keys.
You can turn off flying announcements in you game options and from your chat window in chat options.
As for Lock Boxes that will never happen, lock boxes are a huge money maker for PWE, they will never allow users to simply ignore them as a temptation. Think of them as ads on a free website, the game is free to play because people do actually spend money on things like keys.
I would rather have lock box drops than have critical game functions made inaccessible until I bought an unlock. It's not that big of a deal, it's not like you can't just delete the things. If I were to ask for anything in that regard it would be to have lock boxes stack to a 1000 rather than 20, that's how it works with Champions Online which uses the same engine so there's no reason why we couldn't have that here.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.

Understood, but there are players who like to participate in the lock box roulette and then there are players who like me will never spend money on lock box keys under any circumstances. Why not let me turn off lock boxes because STO is never going to make a dime from me on lock boxes anyway.

Maybe, maybe not. But as long as people see them in their inventory there's a chance someone will decide to take a chance. For that reason they'll never let anyone turn them off, because if they do then you'll see fewer people buying keys for them.
Even if they sell 5 less keys a month, that's still lost money in return for adding code into the game, which also costs money.
So what possible reason does Cryptic have for spending money for the sake of making less money?
