Wait until they introduce faction reputation, likely with season 8, and you will have the option of being an eternal captain I am sure. Likely rank will be a rep unlock item so you could be tier 5 fed but only rank t3 (captain).

Guys, Admiralty ranks are here and here to stay. Every officer that is the commander of a naval vessel is a captain, no matter their rank. If you don't want to be addressed as an Admiral, keep the title of "Captain" in your options.

That's not true.
I use the title "Commander"...but when I hail the missions...they always refer to me as an Admiral.
Nope there isnt as it is a speculation on my part as to how the game can be messed up next but still please the majority of the player base. It has its merits sure and I am pretty sure they did mention faction reps in the last ask cryptic as an upcoming feature.
Does anyone else believe that you gain this rank too fast/early?
Personally...I wish you never attained the rank of Admiral in the game...as it feels odd for an Admiral to be doing the things you do.
However, at the very least...I think you shouldn't be Admiral rank till level 50.
Welcome to 2009.
A number of us railed against the leveling system affecting rank during beta for this exact reason but they went with their plan anyway.
The thing is, STO, from start to "endgame" is a CAPTAIN game. There is no Flag Officer gameplay offered here. This game is about the players commanding a single ship (at a time) with a single body of crew to man it.
If anything, the tutorial should start you out as a Commander/First Officer and grant you actual Captain rank and position at the end of the tutorial. Until they add actual Flag Officer gameplay, you should stay as a Captain.
Even with all players being Captains, there is still progress to be made within the same rank. Newly promoted Captains don't just immediately get access to the best ships in the line (unless JJ Abrams is in charge of your storyline*), they have to work their way up, even as Captains. Picard's first command (as Captain) wasn't the Enterprise, it was the Stargazer. Levels should represent security clearance or seniority within rank, where you would have level 1 Captains to level 50 Captains (currently).
This method would also mean that they would not have to make up ridiculous rank names every time they wanted to expand the leveling system to allow progress to grow. Instead, they could simply tack on some more numbers without breaking immersion by having an ever-growing number of players becoming Super Grand Martial Fleet Admiral-General, Upper-Left quadrant, while the gameplay still reflects that of a Captain.
*Even if you take the Roddenberry timeline instead of the JJ Abrams timeline, the original Kirk's Enterprise wasn't supposed to be "the best ship in the fleet", it represented the standard. What distinguished it from the rest of the line was that it had "the best crew in the fleet", but even that was from Kirk's point of view, so there could be some bias there. Kirk made the ship a legendary name through his actions in TOS, it wasn't already a legend or even the biggest, baddest, most advanced ship in the line.

That would be perfect.
It's a shame that it will probably never be changed.
As I've always said on these forums, it would be best for everyone if ranks and levels were decoupled. Allow the level cap to increase for each new content / FE / whatever, and have ranks as earnable milestones that the game and NPCs would actually address you as*.

Yup. I think that would be nice if you could choose what rant you stay at, just like Picard, Kirk, Riker, Scotty did. I joined this game to be a Captain. Not sit at a desk and fill out paperwork. :P
I agree, Captain should be the highest rank, maybe with seniority levels.
Totally Agree...it should be Captain Rank 1-whatever, It is ridiculous to have this many Admirals in Starfleet, and to those who say it won't change you don't know that, it was brought up at last years Trek convention and the consensus is it should change.

Yeah, because it's silly we are to pretend we are captains of a ship, yet admirals, then told just ignore we are admirals. :P
Wonder if they would be up to reorganizing STO, where Captain is the definitive rank. Then the Devs, GMs, and special guests be Admirals.
I think that we get Admiral too easily just like we get our own starship too easily. It's called gameplay/story segregation. If we had gameplay closer to the Star Trek storyline, most of us wouldn't even be past the ensign rank.
I'd be in favor, of re-structing the ranking/leveling system. It's been done before (albeit minor), when they changed your initial rank to Ensign 0, rather than Lieutenant 1.
At Captain (10), (20), (30), (40), players would still gain access to new ships (T2, T3, T4 and T5 respectively), and at max level your rank would be listed as Captain (50).
"Admiral" / "General" should be a title that is earned by way of accolades/achievements, or after STO is updated with Flag Officer gameplay. Players who already have the titles for Rear Admiral / Vice Admiral, or Brigadier / Major / Lieutenant General, would naturally be allowed to keep said titles. New players / characters, would however be blocked from said titles until the aforementioned Flag Officer gameplay is added.
Even if you start your career in the game as a Captain, you can still roleplay as a person of a lower rank, just as you can now. At Captain rank/level, you have access to Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander and Commander titles. This would not change under the new paradigm.
It's ridiculous (and always has been), that we have thousands of Admirals flying around space, but very few Captains. Michael Eddington said it best, when he said that most Cadets strive to become Captains, to be able to sit in the Captain's Chair. Cadets have very little interest in becoming Commanders, or Admirals.
What is the reasoning behind the Admiral and General ranks anyway? Please, can someone give me a good pro argument for it?
Well in 2409 humans are living longer and there are some long lived races in the Federation so maybe Starfleet added grades above Admiral to compensate.
My Romulan Liberated Borg character made it to Level 30 and beat the (old) Defense of New Romulus with the skill point bug.
What is this, the 5,000th thread on Admiral ranks?
For those of you that it really irks that people in the game are Admirals, let me give you a little bit of perspective. I've been playing this game since beta, there were Admirals then, there are Admirals now and there will be Admirals in the future. Find something more useful to be irked about, there are plenty of things in the game that will suffice.

You may enjoy being an admiral, and have the right to say so.
Certain other players including myself don't, and we also have the right to say so.
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.
Of course technically no one achieve the rank of admiral only Vice admiral. Am I the only one who thinks Rear admiral lower half just sounds um dirty....

Technically speaking, anyone above "Rear Admiral Lower Half", can still be adressed as "Admiral". Just as a Lieutenant Junior Grade is generally referred to as a Lieutenant, or a Lieutenant Commander is referred to as Commander.
One of my favorite shows (outside of Trek), had a character always referred to as General Hammond. Despite the fact, that his rank was Major General (2-star). A Full General, is a 4-star.

May sound stupid, but was anyone from Cryptic involved when it was brought up and in reaching the following consensus? Did they looked awake? Sober?
It would be awesome if they would beat some sanity into the rank/levelup system.
It doesn't matter if its the 1,000th thread or the 10,000th thread on the matter. Most of the time this topic is raised with constructive suggestions following immediately, unlike many other repeating threads which just complain.
This is a quality of life change in a game where being a Captain and not an Admiral should be a recognized option. Even the simplest suggestions I have seen on this have it as a cosmetic change only for those who want to see it say Captain in their UI, item tooltips and be addressed as Captain by NPCs. Those who wish to be Admirals + don't lose out by choosing not to avail of the non-gamechanging option.
You may enjoy being an admiral, and have the right to say so.

It's not a factor of me liking/disliking being called "Admiral", it's more that this is a minuscule issue when it comes to improving game quality. Isn't there something about the game that is more irksome to you than a title? I didn't say you couldn't say so, all I have been saying is get used to being an Admiral.

It's a relatively MINOR thing to change, hardly the amount of work that would significantly derail a developer from other fixes/changes. As has been said earlier, they already made a change of equal workload, when they made the player start at "Ensign 0" instead of "Ensign 1", thereby reducing the maximum displayed level from "Vice Admiral 51" to "Vice Admiral 50".
It should be an even simpler fix, if you consider the possibility of changing "Ensign 0" to "Commander 0", and "Lieutenant 1" and above, to "Captain 1" and above, maxing out at "Captain 50".
What's more bothersome to me, is that there should be some way to FORCE NPCs to address you by your chosen Title. I for one would love to see NPC dialogs popup, where they address me as "Ambassador Darkthunder" rather than just Admiral. The issue here is, the game has a ton of titles to choose from, most of which wouldn't be appropriate in NPC contact dialog. Only ranks, and specific titles such as "Ambassador" would be appropriate.

My apologies for not using the search function.
Though, as the above poster said...I guess it's something I will have to get use to.
Still waiting to be able to use forum titles
That sounds very interesting.
Is there any place I can read up on that?
That's not true.
