Follow option

Hello.

Since I fly a heal boat I normally want to stay close to the cruiser/tank and ensure that they and the other teammates stay alive to do damage.

The FOLLOW feature could help with this if it worked a little better.

From what I can tell the command does work fine so long as I don't touch any controls. For example, at the start of a fleet mark run mission where everyone warps in, if I choose a teammate, my ship will start matching his course and speed. But, if I make any manual changes to flight direction or speed the ability to match speed stops working for the rest of the mission. I can still follow someone but I'm unable to match their speed.

Ideally, it'd be great if matching course and speed worked throughout the entire mission. It'd be even better if I could position my ship near someone and then I would stay in that position. For example, if I were to put my ship and little high and to the right of another ship at a distance of 2km, I would stay in that position and that distance; formation flying for lack of a better term. As it is now, the follow command only allows me to stay directly behind them.

Thanks...

That sounds a little advanced, but I don't see why it can't be done.

How exactly do you "follow" somebody, by the way? What command do you use?

In sector space, you can right click on someone and select "follow" as an option. Not sure if they have to be on your team, though.

As far as I'm concerned, there is absolutely no valid reason not to offer the "follow target" and "match target speed" commands in sector space, system space, in or out of combat. I'm not even hearing any excuses about it.

It can be done in combat, too. Right click the person's icon and select FOLLOW. I think /follow <name> works from the text chat lines too.

Can you "follow" NPCs as well?

    I don't think I've ever tried that.

This also reminds though that in an STF with Klingon/Fed mix, it'd be nice to be able to follow the ships of the other type. For example, my Fed boat can't currently follow a Klingon boat.

I've tried it before and was unable to do so. Seemed especially annoying in one mission because the mission objective was to follow the NPC. But I've tried to follow enemies in order to keep them targeted, too, and it never worked.

Too bad, I was hoping it would help during battles when my lag gets really bad and I'm rubberbanding all over. (Similar to using the map to auto-navigate in order to eventually get where I'm trying to go during the tour - when the rubberbanding stops, at least I'm not somewhere in a different sector or stuck in the side of a planet or whatever)
