I am wondering what the top winter package prize will be this year? With the odds of getting a ship likely 1:300 (Bug ship was around 250 to 300), I'd like see the top prize be a real awesome prize instead of just another ship. How about a LTS account unlock? That's the best prize of all that I can imagine. Anyone disagree?
Now, if you are already LTS then and only then can you get the new ship as the secondary top prize.
Why do it this way? Easy. So LTS can win a ship and sell it on the Exchange for huge money. So then no complaints from current LTS owners right? Right now the Temporal ships are going for 55-60M which seems like a bad deal for anyone buying master keys to try to unlock them at the rate of 1:200. Having the ship limited to be won by LTS means that the ship prices will be much higher.
Meanwhile non LTS can win an LTS without having to put pure cash into the great STO grinding machine. Instead they can put in Dilithium -> Zen -> Winter Packages. (Then they could go on to win the ship after winning LTS.)
How would this help anything?
Well, this would be a big win for the Zen Exchange and start forcing prices more towards 150 rather than the current trend to 100.
Win-win-win-win. Right?
Even STO/PWE wins because they are selling their $300 USD LTSs for $375 USD, if you consider that a Winter Gold Box in the store would be $1.25.
Probably too late for the team to make last minute changes but highly motivated people can get things done quickly if they put their minds to it.
Personally...I kinda hope its a cool Breen ship. But considering a new ship is generally $25...I doubt they will give away $300 LTS' unless they are extremely rare...we are talking like one or two people might win it rare...I doubt it would happen.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
I'd like to see a top prize of 2500 z-points myself. That way I can get what I want, be it a new T5 ship, or some combination of other things in the store.

Eh, the only ships that cost $25 are those that are sold directly through the Z-Store. Those that are sold only in lock boxes are worth far far more. For example look at the chance table for the Temporal Lock Boxes.
The Temporal Science Vessel Starship is listed at 30,994 Zen or $309.94.
Now if you count all the other stuff then it falls to 2,583 Zen, however, most people do not want the lesser prizes. Mirror Vessels worth 500 Zen? Hardly.
Mind you, last year the winter package was the first "Lock Box" ever. It was what started the now long list of Cardassian, Ferengi, Tholian, and Temporal (making STO fabulously wealthy in the process). If bug ship was 300:1, then it stands to reason that the LTS, valued at $300 USD, could be a prize as well.

Spend 125 Zen to win 2500 Zen? Unless the odds of the prize package is 1:20, who is going to buy it?
Mind you there are two ways to get the winter prize package, either running the race and winning a random color (red, blue, green) or buying directly from the store. Most people who run the race end up getting the lowest tier box (red is like 1 to 3%). So really only way to win the top prize would be to buy through the store.
Do you think STO would pass up a chance to use the event to sell a new lockbox?
Having a BO as the top package prize seens anti-climatic, don't you think?
It depends.
I'm burnt out on starships and on this game being Starships Online.
That's just a matter of some art and which five numbers Geko will tweak this time. And whether I get to keep playing what I like or not. Which, at this point, I will.
I picked up the Steamrunner as a curiosity, mainly in case I roll up more alts and even then because of the other stuff in the pack and the price. But that and the Temporal ships have been the only ones I claimed this year. And the Temporal ships have abilities and its the abilities that interest me, aside from my desire for a post-Voyager Relativity spin-off instead of Enterprise.
I don't want another ship. Another ship won't entice me. The only other ship I'm interested in is the Venture.
I don't care that much about the ships at the end of the day and I really couldn't be persuaded to care about them any more beyond improving the ones I have.
Depends on the BO doesn't it
but frankly the lock box ships are mostly rubbish
A "winter package" (AKA "lock box") built around a BO?
That would have to be one amazing BO. Like efficent captain 10x or something.
Then everyone would cry P2W (pay-2-win) and how Starbase 24 is now screwed up by the new BO and PvP has been completely ruined.
If you make a slightly better than ho hum BO then the amount of participation in the event will be mediocre and the event becomes just a basic give away rather than a big thing.
Depends on what STO devs are trying to achieve.
From what Q says a new BO seems quite possible. Maybe this won't be a big event thing, just a way to spend a little time and to have some laughs.
Photonic Ginger Bread Man Science Officer? (Not my gumdrop button!)
I hope they keep the lock box TRIBBLE out of Christmas this year. Buying your own Christmas gifts sucks. But there's hope, Q doesn't mention a ship.
"Maybe you?ll even end up with some Frosted Boots, a new weapon or something to liven up that dreary uniform! Or perhaps a new friend ? who knows?"
Now I'm wondering if it's "BO"-friend or "pet"-friend.
FKA K-Tar, grumpy Klingon/El-Aurian hybrid. Now assimilated by PWE.

Outside of the Tuffi Freighter, flown for its usefulness and cheaper commodities, I don't have any of the ultra-rare or even the mirror ships.
Like you ships don't do much for me. The free ones get the Dilithium grinding job done, abeit a little more work and a lot less niftiness.
Spending $200 to $300 USD for a single character ship unlock seems outragous to me.
Not to mention you can buy most ultra-rare ships off the exchange for <100M EC, or $85.94 USD if you spend the Zen to buy Fleet Support packs and resell them on the Exchange for EC.
Still $86 for ONE ship seems pretty outrageous to me. That's 4 9-month-old brand new XBox 360 games.
Though for other people $86 to $300 USD per ship is just fine for them. It all depends on personal perception.
I would pay money though for an LTS. But not $200 or $300. I would try my hand at winter packages lotto though and see if I get lucky.
Be interesting what they come up with. Hopefully there is a departure and focus more on the ground side for a change.
If this game had more open terrain, I honestly could see mounts becoming the top prize. Or unique set pieces.
Ground is kinda dead unless they change the rewards system. It makes far more sense to spend your time doing space missions like Infected: Elite or Starbase 24 than do to anything ground related (except if you want the Fleet Marks e.g. Colony).

Exactly the point, its a weak area that Cryptic needs to revisit and make viable.
And if they make ground fun, why not add new things for ground that actually makes it fun?
*thinking* a new cruiser, a new cruiser, a new cruiser.... but NOT the ugly breen-thingy!!!
Why new cruiser?
Why not new "must have" escort that excells so much at Starbase 24 that everyone "has to" buy it to win 1st place. Lots of sales for PWE I would have to assume. Right?

I don't count luck ships, it could cost $1000 dollars to get a temporal science ship or it could cost $10. SO back to ships...the only ones above $25 are the special packs.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
It seems anti climatic if the grand prize was anything but a ship or a 3 piece ship or ground set that would inevitably be further monetized by a MKXII version on the lobi store. But it seems there may be a pet or BO up for grabs as part of the event.
It just seems to me, looking at the past year, they are going to do everything they can to make this one hell of a ching ching ching Christmas for themselves. So I fully expect whatever they have in store, it's going to make everyone want to spend money. Now, if they don't do this and actually give us nice things like normal MMOs do during Christmas rather than try to cash in, I'll fall over and croak from shock.
I don't really count a free ship that's probably crappy, btw, towards the requirements of falling over in shock and croaking.

You can spin it however you wish but the average cost of those ships are 300 bucks. Doesn't matter much if you go 1 for 1 or 1 for 1000. The odds are the odds. Cryptic will not ever lose with this. For someone who spent $1.25 on a LTS there will be someone who spent $600 to get one.
You'd be a fool to open lockboxes for a LTS prize anyway, although technically it comes with a lot of vet rewards but unlike certain lockbox ships lifetime subs can be purchased. Hence the foolishness comes into play. It's not a prize many people will care for. If they want a LTS they'll buy it. People want in game rewards from lockboxes. Period. But I am certain SOME would open such boxes if only to spend a few dollars gambling for a cheap LTS/1k day ship. I just don't think it'd be very popular with the players who generally open lockboxes such as myself.

If everyone would follow that logic what would Cryptic entice us with then the next time? We would all fly the same ship no matter what. And every new ship would just be blackmail with a new skin.

So only 299 more posts to go to get the LTS as the top winter prize?

I'd dig one of Q's Vicious Animal Things or a (mostly) de-powered Q.

give us money or become a loser.
Please not those Red Gift Boxes from Hell? And let it NOT be a ship in a box ala Jemy.
On a positive note:
Bring back the Nanopulse Melee weaponry - or at least have them craftable like the scarfs etc...
Of course not ,because those were free to open without keys. This time you will get a lockbox with keys from c store and no free s***
@f4tamy | Sad Pandas
Well at least it may be in a Lockbox with a higher probability of getting one.
If its the FREE unlockable Red Gift Boxes from Christmas Past, expect them to be a nghtmare.
