How Important Is Fun?

edited November 2012 in PvP Gameplay
Someone asked this recently in OPvP. I am surprised it didn't make it to the forums so I'm going to steal it. Simply put, how important is fun?

What is your idea of fun?

How important is it to you that other people have fun, including your friends but also your opponents?

Try to think honestly about it please.

    hale,

fun is the most important aspect of killing bad guys. its why we got into gaming. its why we love trek. they are 2 of the most fun things i can think of.

edit: fun to me, is a joint adventure for adversaries that ends in enjoyment of gameplay regardless of the outcome.

you can have fun, it can be a challenge. you can have fun, it could be relaxing.

fun is what keeps most of us here. no fun is why i think a lot of us are playing other games.

    have fun, kill bad guys

Fun is pretty much the main reason I PvP. I enjoy the challenge, especially when compared to the mind numbingly easy PvE.

I enjoy fights that are gimmickless (no P2W consoles, no trics, no SNB doffs etc, no power siphons), just using skill and intelligence (with regards to builds) and are either pug vs pug or premade vs premade. Basically I enjoy a fair fight, whether or not that leads to me being blown up.

Personally I find I get more enjoyment out of pug matches, since there's more self reliance and hinges more upon individual skill.

On the other hand getting focus fired while getting numerous hold/slow/stun disable isn't remotely enjoyable, since it takes control away from me. This is infact one of the reasons I primarily run an escort instead of a cruiser, as APO means I can break most holds and slows.

Also to be honest I find cross healing to be an added bore. Watching someone who has zero skill being kept on lifesupport by his team is annoying. Don't get me wrong, as long as it's available in the game I'll cross heal, I just find it makes a match less enjoyable.

Fun for some douchebags, is queuing up as a premade with FOTM to grief people.

And then disappearing from queues when the FOTM gets fixed, only to reappear in the queues when another FOTM appears.

I like a fairly clean match with minimal science TRIBBLE. More importantly, I want my teammates to actually help each other instead of behaving like selfish douchebags out there.

First, Snoge00f, what is FOTM? I can't quite figure out what you mean.

Second, I REALLY wanna make a joke here.

Third, I find the most fun to be an exhilarating match, using skill and effort to try and defeat the opponent, not just cheap tactics. It's really very exciting when another player and I, in an arena or something start to duke it out, doing an unexpected 1 v 1. Sometimes I kill that player, sometimes that player kills me. Either way, it''s almost always extremely enjoyable.

When it starts getting into paid-for consoles and ships, with every bit of cheapness under the sun to win, then it loses it fun. When the enemies are weak, without any to no skill or just AFKing, then it also can lose it's fun.

To me, PvP is fun, and as long as it stays fun and enjoyable, I'll do it. When it loses it's fun, I stop doing it.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

I'm all about having fun and up for a good challenge.

It's when I am faced with the usual suspects that throw everything considered broken at me, including the kitchen sink that I loose my cool.

    I don't mind losing.

    I do mind...

... when it's as a result of someone that is intentionally running a known power that's only effect is causing graphic issues, DC and lag.

... when it's someone that corkscrews their way to the ceiling, thinking "Ooooy look at how cool I am..."

... when I am in a match where the opposing team relies on every broken power to justify their inflated sense of superiority.

    Earlier today...

    Match #1
Guy on our PUG flies out there fast, notes that it's a premade, and says there's no hope. They're very light on the cheese though - so he's calling targets, and although we lose - it's not that bad. There was still some fun to be had - it was the basic if we'd been a team, worked better together, etc, etc, etc - could have been a great match. It was an acceptable loss - a logical loss.

    Match #2
Teamed with that guy again. He starts calling targets, but it's not long before he drops. The rest of us keep fighting, but I choose not to queue after that. I'm not sure what cheese this group didn't use. It was like an aggregate of complaints from the forums - would have made a great video for the devs to watch - hey guys, this is what folks are complaining about. There was no fun in the least - it was just one of those why am I bothering with this game moments.

It's possible to lose and still have fun - to want to keep playing.
It's possible to lose and want to uninstall the game - to bad mouth the devs to all your friends and random strangers while waiting in line at the grocery store.

    Fun's very important...

edit: BTW, that was FvF Arena. Earlier on a KDF toon, in a KvF match - our PUG beat their PUG in a 4v4 C&H. All the same though, it wasn't fun. Say what? Two of the Feds were AFKers from the start. It was a meaningless victory - where the AFKers sucked the fun out of it for both their team and our team.

It's possible to win and still not have fun.

Fun's very important, in case you missed that earlier...

Fun to me is an exhilarating fight with little to no cheese.

Fun to me is being assaulted from all sides, with no hope for survival, yet through judicious use of heals, regens, and all sorts of buffs, I take all of their firepower and still come out alive. And for added hilarity, a bit of taunting.

    Fun is...

    - Being able to use my skill to my advantage
    - Being forced to pull on all my resources and abilities as a starship commander
    - Being able to improve my gameplay or my preparations (build)
    - Killing enemies because of my skill
    - Being killed because of my lack of skill

    Not fun is...
    - Not having time to activate my abilities before i'm zappd
    - Steamrolling pugs
    - Not being able to improve because one IWIN ability>everything else
    - Killing enemies that are more skilled than me
    - Being killed despite having superior skill

FOTM, means flavor of the month. It basically refers to the latest power or combination of powers that are irresistible. Kinda like TBR was.

Fun is the most important aspect of any game-- it's why we all play. I had been using plasmonic leech console in pvp's, but some feddies were complaining about it and how their power levels kept dipping to where they couldn't do anything. I know plasmonic leech by itself will not cause this, but Husanak made a a good point in that I can't control what other people on the team are using, so plasmonic leech combined with other power drain abilities could be a bit much. I have since removed the plasmonic leech console because I realize being immobilized is not fun and I'd rather win on skill than a combination of P2W consoles and power drain abilities.

I think PvPing Skurf would be fun. They seem like they are about the challenge and not just the win. I can appreciate that.

    Fun for me would be:

    Space:

A reduction in the "Grief Causing" consoles, or at least a way to balance them amongst the Bridge officer powers avaliable.

Proper Counter play between Boff Powers, Console Powers, Ship powers, and Ship Weapons.

Proper levels of Skill resistances and a more diverse Skill tree amongst the resists.

More Diverse Maps to play in. Arena and Capture and hold are fun and all, but I'd love to see something else.

A use for every weapon type. Currently it's either: Torps, Tricobalt Mines, DHC's and Turrets or single Beam arrays.

    True 360 Degree space combat.

More Open PVP zones, or More to do in the current ones (with bug fixes applied)

    Ground:
    More Diverse use of Kits.

Better "shooter" Functionality (Such as targetable locations on Dummies if in FPS mode causing different damage effects to encourage more FPS usage)

Less reliance on Tac = God, Every thing else runs and hides/defends against Tac.

Better resistances vs Lobi Store Weaponry/New Unresisted energy types.

More Diverse Maps to play in. Arena and Shanty Town are fun and all, but I'd love to see something else. (Perhaps more bug fixes in Shanty Town)

What I find fun, is having a match where there is plenty of chemistry between both teams. This means there's no Kirking about, teams, play as a team.

I don't like getting swamped with P2W consoles, spam, tractor spam, siphon spam and all that jazz.

But it is important to me that other people enjoy the match as well, which is why I will try to stay away from using broken consoles or abilities. Can't have much fun if you drive away everyone that you can PvP against. If that makes me a scrub, so be it, at least its way better than being a prick.

Other mines are definitely viable thanks to the mine revamp, which is something that Cryptic has actually done to improve PvP and I applaud them for it. They even fixed the buggy transphasic cluster torp, which is also now viable in PvP. I've heard single cannons are not horrible with DEM and some RCS's on a cruiser, although I haven't tried myself as I don't fly cruisers. TBR's are a fairly effective weapon and spam deterrent. Dual Beam Banks are amazing for beam overloads. So yeah, there's a lot more than just what you mentioned.
