Should there be a way within the forum rules to remove a perma-ban for a user?

sophlogimosophlogimo Member Posts: 6,507 Arc User
This has come up own on the PvP subforum, but I think it deserves a broader discussion.

So there are perma-bans on the forums, if only in very severe cases. To some people, that can be a very big deal, some even seem to risk creating a new account (which is a violation of the forum rules in itself, if I understand them correctly). What is your opinion: Should people who got perma-banned have the chance to get the posting rights back, for example, by opening a support ticket after a set amount of time with a declaration that they are willing to an going to follow the rules from now on?

If so, why do you think so, and what should be required for it?

If not, what are your reasons for being against it?
Remember, STO is nothing but a cosmetics game, where only the rule of cool matters. The game mechanics are intentionally out of balance, don't try to "optimize" anything, as it would just frustrate you.

My feeling are that some people get very passionate about their views on trek, and this game.
Sometimes to the point of breaking forum policies.I can see a suspension, on variable infractions. But,having a lift after a time period.
AS far as lifetime bans, I think that should be reserved for people who have shown themselves as consistent trolls, and only post to anger the community at large.
(Yeah, fixed..realized I was breaking forum policy doing that.Sorry, past the ol' bedtime.)

Depends on the reasons for the ban. If someone breaks heavily the rules repeatidly, sure it is justfied. If someone is just vocal in critique against some dev decisions or mechanics, that's just lame and reminds me of communist cenzorship in my country a few decades back.

Perma bans are pointless anyway, as you can create new account in few minutes after. It servers no purpose, except to alienate part of the playerbase.

is it a ban from the game or just forums ?

if its just forums then nothing wrong with perm ban. if its from the game then they should be forced to play back the player what spent on the game since it amounts to theft.

    Hence my question.

In my own opinion, giving people the option to get back the posting rights after some longer period of time (such as half a year) might help discouraging people from creating dummy accounts just to post on the forums. I was wondering how others view this.

You would wait half year and not create a new account ? Seriously...

Generally, bans here are only for the forum, not the game, as far as I know.

If someone is "deserving" of a ban, it should be BOTH for the forums as well as the game!

Here's a thought: if you get permabanned, it's because you've been causing enough trouble to deserve it. Stop causing trouble and you won't get permabanned.

My thoughts exactly. While I wouldn't regard Cryptic's forum policies to be the most just and sensible ones out there, if I can get through three years of being far from Cryptic's staunchest advocate and best friend without a single infraction, I just can't imagine what you'd have to do to get twenty. Alright, so I'm pretty sure I've edited plenty of stuff out of my posts (you'd be hard pressed to find many posts of mine on this forum that don't have the "Last Edited by:" bit at the bottom) that might've gotten me an infraction, but that's just it; Think before you post. Or very quickly after.

Now I'm pretty sure people who do get permabanned, have gotten suspensions prior to that. And I have a hard time believing anyone who is capable of racking up twenty infractions, is capable of learning from the experience. The learning curve starts at one infraction. And it just wouldn't be a perma-ban anymore, if it were temporary.

I don't think "But there's a way around it!" is a good reason to overturn a permaban. Fine, they can't stop people from creating new accounts. It is an F2P game, afterall. That's kind of F2P's whole thing. But they can at least, as a matter of principle, maintain the posting restriction on people's main accounts. Otherwise, it would look like tacit approval of extreme behavior.

I don't think there should be any permabanning, at most maybe a few month bans to allow a poster to think about his naughtyness but only under extreme circumstances should a user be permanently banned.

There is no need for speculation about how infractions and suspensions work.

    It's all right here: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/announcement.php?f=120&a=51

I'm highly tempted to close the thread just to avoid the possibility of anyone getting into trouble with this, but I'll leave it open for now. Just remember that you aren't allowed to post about any administrative decisions here, and that the forum rules are not open for argument on the website.
