What Causes This Effect?

Recently I've noticed (especially with plasma torpedo) some weird things:

1. Sometimes when an enemy fires at me, the torpedo will travel a short distance then reverse it's course and hit the ship that fired it.

2. Other times a group of enemies, same type, will fire at me... torpedo travels short distance... then it alters course and slams into one of his allies.

I was like WTH? LOL

Does anyone know what causes this? Or is it a bug?

Heavy torpedoes are susceptible to things like scramble sensors or antimatter spread that can make them retarget friendlies or the ship that fired them. Can actually be a viable strategy if you get lucky against a Warbird or Unimatrix.

The science captain ability scattering field also has a chance to deflect heavy torpedoes back into the enemy you are currently targeting, if the enemy is within 5Km.
