There is a reason why consoles exist to boost all beam types, it's so that people can run proc-boats rather than maxing one energy types DPS and there is nothing wrong with that just remember if one of those procs on you you'll regret bashing them.
Cryptic are very fond of saying they're all for customisation and therefore they won't make any negative changes to this.
Common problem, simple solution. Change chat channels for a better "quality" of player. Public PUGS can be fun, and occasionally completed even at the elite level with all options.

Find a Better Game by Changing the Chat Channel
STO has a robust chat channel system available to all players. For the purposes of this example, I'll be talking about two channels - one public (anyone can join) and one private (you have to ask to be invited).
Public: PublicEliteSTF
Members: 3500+ (over 300 online at any time)
Purpose: For players looking to run Elite STFS with optionals.
Rules: (1.) Standard Invite Code Rules (see below) (2.) You should know what the Optionals are before you join. This is a chat channel for stf's only, and they actively discourage open conversations outside of stf's. It's partially moderated, meaning if you break the rules on invites, you can get kicked (rarely).
My Impression: Friendly, easy going group. You will miss optionals occasionally, as the players are often new. Missions are pre-planned with roles assigned.
PRIVATE: PublicEliteSTF
Members: 1200+ (30+ on at any time)
Purpose: Elite Player Only. To become a member you must read the rules.
Rules: (1.) Standard Invite Code Rules (see below) (2.) You must know what the Optionals. THIS CHANNEL IS ACTIVELY MODERATED, AND HAS A HIGH KICK RATE.
My Impression: A great group dedicated to professional STF runs; they discuss the games tactics, define roles before the start of the mission, and generally will not tolerate inexpereinced players. This channel is NOT for first time players.
Standard Invite Code Rules
To assemble games, we use a short-hand series of statements to invite players. One player will Create Private to set up the game (password isn't necessary), and then post a statement in the appropriate chat channel.
Example: LF3M CSE, sharpe for invite
Response to join: sharpe
LF3M - looking for 3 more players, etc.
CGE - Cure Ground Elite
CGN - Cure Ground Normal (all mission are basically abbreviations of the mission name and type)
CSE - Cure Space Elite, etc...
Sometimes they will be more specific: LF2M, CSE, Escorts Only to call out a specific need. The player who created the game will right click on your name, and Invite to Challenge Match
After the players have been selected, the person who created will usually post a closing line like this: sharpe full, thx all (this is a nice way of letting people know its closed).
So far this seems like common sense, and not so much as rules exactly. Here are the general rules shared by both channels:
Read the channels posting guidelines. If you ignore this and make mistakes, you will be banned.
Post only missions using the above code examples
Don't set up a new mission while 1 or more are already being offered.
Don't SPAM your offer every 2 seconds. Wait at least 20 seconds between postings.
Join codes must NOT be 3-letters of the same type, e.g. TRIBBLE, 777, ***
Join codes must not be profanity or anti-moderator, e.g. THRAX SUCKS (note: Thrax is a moderator, and likely very grumpy)
Note: PublicEliteSTF has very rigid rules that are enforced. In addition to being one of the best places to pick up games with GOOD players, it also has it's own BANNED thread on the STO forum with a second series of rules on how to get unbanned. Be nice, read the rules, and be sure you know your Optionals before you ask to join!

Yes, rainbow boats get a bad rep. One problem with that argument - sci ships don't do much in terms of concentrated dps - so weapon grouping and choice of type are irrelevant. Thier best use are as shields shredders, repair, rifts, subsystem attacks etc. My scitoon focuses just on shields as an example, and can strip a tac cube in under 20 seconds. The time it takes for the team to down it substantially drops. DPS aside, I'd rather have at least 1 sci toon healing and stripping shields for me.

keep in mind 1 thing as well. the new chroniton temporal double Beam in the lobi store fires multicolors in one beam.... i've heard stories of people callin people using this rainbow boats. Esspecially if they use Fire at will with it. Though you can only have 1...
so just make sure things are your calling the right people rainbow boats.

No, they aren't going to disallow "rainbows". And I use generic consoles myself occasionally, but understanding that they are less effective than the more specific consoles.
Plus there are diminishing returns on multi-procs. Procs aren't guaranteed, and the more weapon types you use, the less likely any one proc is to fire.
Personally, I think I'd mix two energy weapon types at most, depending on what effects I'm going for. I'm less picky about projectiles and mines, as those are weapons of opportunity anyhow. Please note that's my attitude toward science vessels and possibly certain cruiser builds... I'm rather more in agreement with the majority about escort builds.

yeah but the reason (still think 99% of rainbow players lack reasoning) is flawed. Gimping the little dmg they have even further.
if the beam consoles would buff the same % as type specific consoles, then it would be ok...but they do not.
and since the gate or all transformers will not care about the amount of shield you will drain, or what subsystem you will disable...atleast 2 weapon type procs are already a waste.

If you want multi procs use hybrid weapons. No reason to ever use rainbow anymore now that these are out and cheap on exchange. Procs aren't all that reliable in STF besides disruptor breach though, best to just use all [Borg] disruptors, you can't ever go wrong there.
Also isn't the private STF channel just called EliteSTF and not PublicEliteSTF? I am a member of the PublicEliteSTF channel that doesn't require invite and the EliteSTF channel that does require one, not sure if there is another channel also called PublicEliteSTF that does require invites to get in.

I'd never fly a rainbow- or skittleboat myself, simply because it looks dumb, but I still think people are making too much of a fuss about it. The amount of damage a well-built skittle/rainbowboat loses when being compared to a single-energy-type ship is almost negligable, especially when mounting it in ships which only have 2 tac console slots. It's what? A mere 4% damage reduction when comparing the equally expensive blue Mk.XI phaser relay vs. a purple Mk.XII manifold? You'll probably lose more damage due to lag...
Things like lag, players being afk, not knowing the encounter, horrible boff setups and choices, using abilities at the wrong time or using wrong abilities in the first place (e.g. boarding parties against a borg node), energy distribution mismanagement, bad weapon setup, pointless deaths, lack of communication, wrong doffs or no doffs at all, bad builds etc... have more influence on the outcome of an STF than using photon consoles instead or warhead yoield chambers...
I'd also bet that if we were to inspect the builds and setups of the people crying about rainbow boats, we'd probably find flaws in 95% of them that would outweigh the use of rainbow beams.
Sometimes, I'll throw a phased tetryon, or a polarized tet beam in with my regular tets.
I was using two standard green disruptors with my spiral wave's, and recently I've mixed it up with a polarized disruptor or two.
Am I getting diminishing returns then on procs?
Am I doing something stupid whilest trying to be clever?
You are basically getting a lower chance of more procs. If anything you get diminishing returns having just one flavor of disruptor since disruptor breach does not stack. Tet is different since the proc is shield damage, so mixing doesn't matter, get the highest proc rate possible unless you are aiming for combined procs.

One way to avoid this situation all together is to join a good fleet. My motto regarding STF?s is simply..

Hi there nice post and guide regarding coming onto an STF channel. I own and run PublicEliteSTF. The public non invite one. You have reversed your information I'm afraid...:D but no worries! PublicEliteSTF is in fact the 1300+ (150-250 online at any time) open public channel. EliteSTF is the PRIVATE 3500+ channel just to clarify and perhaps you could edit the post to reflect this please.
PublicEliteSTF, my one, the open channel has no issue with guys chatting away on channel once games are running. If not or if guys are just hanging out not doing much we prefer if you would run games then chat for an hour. The channel is moderated, abusive behaviour will get you muted, excessive trolling is also heavily frowned upon and you will be dealt with if you continue to do so. That being said, these things will never apply to the vast majority of people thank god!
Also we expect guys to come on channel KNOWING the missions and optionals. The quality of games on channel is high and we intend to keep it that way. As such we ask that you get training in fleet before coming on channel, or at least tell people you may not know missions or optionals before starting games. While we are a friendly bunch, some of the best players in game frequent the channel, once you are straight up and tell people your new and are unsure of the optionals they may even give you the tips and tricks you need. If you try sneaking into games without knowing what you're doing you do face the possibility of getting angry players on your back.... understandably so. This is the same in any STF channel. The simple solution to this is to make sure you have an idea what your doing. There are multiple guides and youtube videos you can check out first, we actually have on linked in our MOTD so there's little excuse and as mention just letting guys know before they run with you can save yourself and everyone alot of unnecessary agro.
We all get enough off the borg we dont need more. Damn you Donatra and your green balls of death!! I joke i joke, she never gets me I dps her upclose from from behind... pew pew!! See tips already!! I'm too nice...
Anyways....! I digress, do take the advice of the quoted post regarding running games, and most off all enjoy the channel and have fun....once you know the optionals....!
Good luck and Good Hunting
@wildchild8 PublicEliteSTF (the 1300+ not private one...)
PS Rainbow "proc" boats suck big time!!! You're gimping yourself and your team in an STF. Procs don't kill people I do... and my single energy type mk xii dhc with making all same energy type consoles.... try saying that 10 times fast...

That being said, why have you guys not banned me yet lol... Jokes jokes, I would prefer not to be banned, I rather like the people in there, and a lot of my best STF runs have come out of there. Even though I have as of yet to get a successful IGE opt run... rather infuriating being that it's the last one I have for that accursed accolade.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
Seeing people with Airheading beam builds in elite STFs often usually means the chances of getting the optional drop well over 50% in my experience, though some have come out OK... I just wish something could be done to the actual stats to make it not so attractive to those who don't understand what procs/what doesnt proc together.
Even just a 1 liner in the tooltip stating:
"2.5%: .... (Note: This effect will not activate if a different weapon effect is active)" or "Note: It is suggested you use 1 energy type to increase your chances of a weapon effect activating)"
would help keep Airheading beam builds and Skittle cannon builds down (I choose calling these builds airhead beams because they look more like a pack of airheads exploding than rainbows shooting out in my opinion) some I think for those who don't read the forums or check mechanics.

This is why I like doing ESTFs on my tac far more than my engineer. If it's a subpar group running rainbows, or starcruisers or whatnot, I can often make the difference in terms of DPS or CC with consoles to get the optional. If it's a completely horrid setup though, I can't overcome that.
For my engineer, it's a lot harder because she just doesn't have the DPS options I do, and her survivability options don't amount to nearly as much.
On the upside, I enjoy PUGing because it's a lot more dynamic than fleet runs. I'm constantly being forced to adapt to often chaotic situations, which keeps me on my toes and has me try out different builds. Fleet runs tend to be snooze-fests in comparison.
For many of us, the only reason we even do STFs anymore is dilithium so a little chaos keeps the tedium at bay, depending on how you look at it. Now days, I find elites far more tolerable than the normals.
Certainly agree there, I tend to run with my Tac in the patrol escort. I got an eng char in a Gal-X with very high tanking DPS standards but I'm nervous about going into a random group with it because if its all Airheading and Skittles then nothings going to get done quickly enough.
Having one airhead or skittle is OK though, doesnt hurt the optional too much.. don't mind that.
Not to mention I can't help but wonder what they must be thinking when they see me make an attack run hitting my AP scatter volley and Quantum torp spread and shreading apart stuff they've barely been able to make a shield dent in
I'll do PUGs fairly often but only elite, since for the most part groups are at least OK there enough to get the job done, and I'm happy about that, and I as well still get the occassional unexpected suprise to keep me on my toes from the cookbook formula for STFs and still at least win.
Best way to avoid the airheading and skittles is to do elite, they seem to be far far less common there than normal, thankfully!

I heard a very thorough rumor about using different energy types draining more from the weapons power then the same items of a matching energy type set.
I basically hear that from every people I meet in game. Would this not be the biggest problem with rainbow build? (Apart from the energy-specific consoles being much better)
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.
I heard a very thorough rumor about using different energy types draining more from the weapons power then the same items of a matching energy type set.
I basically hear that from every people I meet in game. Would this not be the biggest problem with rainbow build? (Apart from the energy-specific consoles being much better)
That's all it is. A rumor. I used to run a rainbow build, and it drained the same power as my current homogenous build. Anyone who tells you that it uses more energy is taking you on a wild goose chase.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
Rainbow Warriors aren't really the root of the issue, they just illustrate the problem in a more colorful way if you don't mind the pun. For all this easy PvE stuff (including Elite STFs) it doesn't really matter if you use 1 energy type or 6 as long as you know some basics about ship builds and combat tactics. Outside of PvP and the NWS the difference is not important at all.
The thing is, people spitting rainbows usually also have builds that make you scratch your head, so you basically know right from the start that you'll have to put some more effort in to get the optional this time. There are as many single color failboats or even more as there are rainbow boats and with them you might see the problem too late to react, like when this Tac/Defiant struggles to take out 3 Raptors in CSE for example.
So point is, rainbows aren't worse than other failboats, we just recognize and remember them thanks to their flashy presence. You really think those colorful "insert cruiser type" (and let's be honest, most of them are cruisers) would be a better addition to your team with a single energy type? They'd still dealing close to zero damage, explode in seconds and spitting boarding parties while doing so.
I heard a very thorough rumor about using different energy types draining more from the weapons power then the same items of a matching energy type set.
I basically hear that from every people I meet in game. Would this not be the biggest problem with rainbow build? (Apart from the energy-specific consoles being much better)
That's one of the most persistent false statements you'll hear in this game. Drain does NOT depend on energy type. Every energy weapon you shoot after the first will drain exactly what it says in its tooltip.
I must admit I prefer my Phased disruptors to the normal ones. Also Having polarized turrets on the back, does give me 3 weapon benefits in 1 weapon type. Just check out my klink...
If you see her Rubma Harda Babycakes... She has a nice weapon layout!
I have on my first toon, in my Tholian Carrier Plasma disruptors, as you cannot get the phased... Which is a shame, because they do have a better DPS.
Unless I am wrong, if you know of an episode on the FED side that gives you phased disruptor heavy cannons please let me know...
One more thing, if you work as a team in STF games you will always get option no matter what dps you have...
If you dont talk to each other or follow the leaders commands you will fail... Its common sense really.

Yeah, those same people are the kind of people I have to keep throwing TacTeam to. They are usually awful and have the worst builds in the game.

That's one of the most persistent false statements you'll hear in this game. Drain does NOT depend on energy type. Every energy weapon you shoot after the first will drain exactly what it says in its tooltip.

They mean different energy types. Like a phaser, disruptor, antiproton, etc. all in same ship.
Chroniton is fine.
Can't tell sarcasm
If you see her Rubma Harda Babycakes... She has a nice weapon layout!
I have on my first toon, in my Tholian Carrier Plasma disruptors, as you cannot get the phased... Which is a shame, because they do have a better DPS.
Unless I am wrong, if you know of an episode on the FED side that gives you phased disruptor heavy cannons please let me know...
One more thing, if you work as a team in STF games you will always get option no matter what dps you have...
If you dont talk to each other or follow the leaders commands you will fail... Its common sense really.
