So Cryptic, how long until we get a mobile game for Doffs and Fleet missions?

Typical behavior for Cryptic World, though - they have a long track record of proficiency in figuring out what feature the community wants most and then deliberately omitting that feature. Ambassador class, anyone?

As I mentioned, this is going to be the initial release/ beta phase, and will have just the first set of features -- it really can only grow from here. We'd love for players to get their hands on what we've developed thus far so we can collect feedback and input. We want the DOFF system available and our working on it -- it's a massive undertaking for Cryptic's Core team and everyone is just as excited for the possibilities as you are :)

    Cheers,

Is that really THE feature that the community wants most, or just something that a portion of the forum users here would like if you asked them if they wanted it?

Can you shed some light on what those features are going to be, exactly, if not duty officer system? I recall a website feature from some time ago that allowed to view one's characters and captain's log, but I can't really say it was that interesting, and I can't think of many _useful_ features such "app" could have aside from doffs, in-game chat, and perhaps starbase holdings.

Also, is it just a mobile app, or something browser based is planned as well? Personally I work alot on a laptop that cannot run STO, but I would love to do some basic stuff (such as the doffs or sb projects) without having to change machines. And I'm not really a big fan of mobile apps and such - I'm one of those few ppl who use their phone only for *shock gasp* making calls and texting. ;>

Still, I must say I'm intrigued. Curious to see how it'll turn out.

PR spin aside, the fact remains that a Doff app has been the number 1 feature requested for a mobile app, yet it apparently wont be the first thing developed for a mobile app. Really weird priorities.

It would be cool if we had something web based/app for ppl with phones where you could manage multiple characters at once doing doffing activities :) Is just a thought since managing 12 kdf takes up so much time I haven't really had the time to even play the federation side of it yet with about half as many kdf characters.

Does Blackberry still exist now? And if so, why? :P

Like MACs, Blackberries still exist so that the people, who are so inclined to do so, can continue to request awkward compatibility attention from developers.

    This! So much this!!

I already have my Galaxy Note skinned like a PADD and applied with LCARS theme. Adding the STO Gateway would complete the set which no self-respecting captain should be without, even when a 3-piece set bonus!

Asides from not having a working phaser or tricorder. :P

Also, I love the Galaxy series. Them being called Galaxy is win enough. :D And then Samsung spent 1billion dollars proving that the series is exactly the same as an i-type, at half the price and 3 times the variety.

    Geekout over.

It's no PR spin. In order to implement a DOFF system out of the game, these features had to be developed and implemented first. The priorities are spot on for future features to fall in place.

More info will be in our blog this week.

I would imagine the hardest part would be "Well, What ship do you have and how fast does it travel? What are you going to do while time passes for your ship to get to the next sector block?"

Not to mention the STO programming server side would have to be modified to accept 2 different client programs.

I swear I feel like one of you has bugged my desk at work lol

We'll have information on the STO Gateway (working title) in an upcoming Season 7 Dev Blog. I will say that, in its initial Beta release, it won't have access to the DOFF system, but it is a goal of ours with it. The initial features are pretty cool, though, and it can only grow from here. I squeed when I first saw it.

    Cheers,

Has the team thought about what to do for those players who don't have smartphones or have no access to such (budget restrictions)? Obviously if they don't have a smartphone, they can't download this app when it goes into beta somewhere during Season 7 methinks.

I'm pretty sure it'll be an optional thing, a QoL app for serial doffers. It shouldn't replace anything in game.

This is a very valid point.

As some of you may know I work in App development in my free time, and have a non-too unrelated app available for the iOS App Store, and sometimes you just have to build the foundations before you can build the shiny bits. It's a case of get the basics out, check systems work and that the easy functions are functioning correctly, then start on the shiny objects.

Does this always coincide with demand? No, absoloutely not, but it's just part of the development process unfortunately.

Yes; for those players, they produce a Windows program you can use to access the doff system. I believe the filename is GameClient.exe. ;)

Cute joke, by the way ;)

But, seriously, this is why I'd rather see a mobile site than an app. Smartphones, feature phones, tablets running different hardware/OSs, laptops, desktops, etc. - why make an app for each? Someone is always going to get left out that way. A mobile site will maximize who can use it, there's no dealing with anyone's submission guidelines, HTML is a standard, etc.

Making an app would bring up things like "Where's my Linux version?" "Why aren't you releasing a non-App store version for my older Mac?" "Hey, I'm not running Jellybean on my Android tablet!" and all that...

Not everyone can just play STO if they aren't at their normal PC. For example, conventions may have an "internet room" and those computers might be built specifically for reading forums, checking mail, or using an IM service. How would they doff if they can't get at the game? If they don't have a "fancy" smartphone?

The answer right now is: "they can't". Players that lack a smartphone can't doff unless they find a computer that meets the minimum requirements and has STO installed. My concern is a web-page kind of thing they can visit while abroad with which they can access from their less "fancy" phone or a library/convention PC to check on their doffs. ;)

Great news, I longed for the possibility to doff in little spare time in mobility.

This is a major addition to STO experience, good work!

I have but one personal question: Will it work with a Windows Phone? :P
I still dream from time to time about using the Gateway to doff off-game in spare minutes as we were told
