The LTS, is it "worth it" now?

darkstarkiriandarkstarkirian Member Posts: 1 Arc User
In the past, post Season 5, there were threads discussing weather or not the LTS was worth the money in a F2P game.
With the recent change to the LTS, is it worth it now?

probably depends on your (generally speaking, not you specifically) starting point and what you want to do with the game.

if you have paid no money whatsoever then 1000 days of rewards, the stipend, 8 foundry slots, extra boff slots, characters slots, higher EC caps, rank ship tokens etc might seem like a pretty good deal for a reduced price.

if little or none of that interests the person, or they have already subbed and spent some money on upgrades then no not really.

It's worth it if you consider the all vet rewards being available immediately worth the price you pay. Keep in mind that most of these are fluff that can't be obtained easily in any other way (like the Android BOff and Borg Captain).

Before the 1000-day turnover I would have warned the [other thread's] OP away from an LTS simply because there was no real benefit from it. Vet Rewards over time if you were patient, a Lib Borg and a fancy forum title. Yippee? Really, the only way I would have suggested going for it was if you were a strong Trek fan and/or really enjoying the game beforehand.

Now, though? I'd say there's enough there in terms of value added by the mass unlock of Vet Rewards that, if you have $300 or whatever they're selling it for during the sale lying around and you won't miss that money somewhere else? Go for it. Just keep in mind, this game is nearly three years old and has been on shaky ground for a long time now. If you spend the money, do so knowing it could blow up in your face just as easily as you could be enjoying the game three years from now in your shiny Chimera/Peghqu'.

tl;dr Yes, but only if you've got the spare cash lying around. If you're scraping and saving to afford one, you might be better off using that money elsewhere to start with.

Well, honestly, if you think you'll be a long-time player (20 months regular price, 14 months on sale), and want the Gold perks, then yes. My friends and I have all recouped the costs of our lifetimes versus subscribing.

Also, when considering Free vs Gold/Lifetime?
    • Free has a 10 million EC cap, and it costs 500z to raise it to 1 billion like G/L.
    • Free gets fewer BOFF slots, and gets them less frequently than G/L. 250z per 2 slots per character.
    • Free gets less free inventory slots than G/L - those are 400z per 12 per character (max 3 upgrades per character).
    • Free doesn't get any account storage unless they buy it (1,000z per 10 slots, max 40). G/L get 20 to start, and can get up to 60.
    • Free has to pay for respec tokens at 500z per. G/L get those every rank.

How many of those matter or not to you is always an important question. For me, though, my LTS saved me from buying quite a bit of stuff because it was included in the Gold status. Plus, there's also the stipend to consider - that's easily my "profit" each month at this point. That's stuff in the shop, Dilithium, whatever I need/want to buy. Then there's the VRs on top of that.

I bought my LTS at $300, and felt it was worth it. At $200 with the current sale, plus the recent change? That's icing and sprinkles on the cake if you buy now. I do realize, of course, its a pretty substantial chunk of money for a game, so its really up to you. And, if you've got the time to earn Dilithium and sell for Zen, you can buy a lot of things that way.

Your call - you know what's important to you, what your budget is, etc.

Considering a lts accounts starts off with 4 character slots and a fresh toon with 1000 day vet reward once it hits va has 10 respec tokens for a total of 40 respec across all toons each worth $5. that alone is a $200 value.

    Simply put:

Never bought Gold or unlocked anything available from Gold? LTS is worth it.

If not, it gets less and less the more you've unlocked.

I for one am still hamstrung to 10million EC, been saving for LTS for a year now. :s

Look at it this way, you can spend $200 and two* ships and all of the current and future Subscriber Perks, or you can spend $200 on lockboxes and get nothing but Doffs. :P

Look at it this way: the value of the vet rewards is somewhere around $120 if individually bought from the CStore (more or less depending on how much value you place on the cosmetic items). With the sale on right now, that leaves $80 to pay off at $5 per month in Zen credit, so 16 months to break even if that is all you are counting, or 6 months if you are counting the full $15 per month gold sub. If the items in there are things you want, and that sounds like a reasonable thing, go for it.

I am thinking of a lifetime subscription but find that even on sale the price is too high. I can only afford NZD$100 or less.

I started playing this game in February, after it went FTP, and since then I've logged nearly 500 hours of gameplay. I've bought several ships and items in the CStore, and every now and then the Lifetime Subscription does look rather tempting. My problem is, there is no way I can afford to blow $300, or even $200, in one go on a game. I think my wife would have my guts for garters. XD

    There is no right answer.

Most would say they would not spend $200 on a game but if you are committed to Star Trek and the STO community and have -major- fleet influence then $200 is really small change for what's to come in STO.

But common sense - do not spend $200 just for the new ship, obviously. Look at the big picture before committing. As posted by others, are you going to play STO with your group of friends / fleets for the next 2-3 years?

It's quite easy to decide whether to invest in the game or not that way.

Agreed, there really is no right answer in regards to this. There is only opinion.

As it currently stands, the game has been out for almost 3 years... there are some benefits... but now that it's F2P, I wouldn't honestly spend $200-300 to get an LTS. Granted, I already have one, and that's the opinion of a Lifer.

I don't know if buying the LTS was worth it or not.

As I expected the game to have some longevity to it, I thought the time release of the goodies was a nice idea, as well as the free points each month. I thought it would keep me going into the future, even if I hit upon hard times and could not afford to buy anything new with real money for a while there would still be new goodies to look forward to.

It was weird to log in today and see all of the rewards flashing up on the screen in front of me, all in one go. I felt it de-valued the rewards, and I felt a little let down by the decision that PWE made in doing that. :(

Just set aside $10 dollars a week from your paycheck, informing her of the specific purpose of its usage. If "SHE" is a loving and understanding wife, I am sure she'll agree to it. All you're doing is saving $10bucks a week, heck you can even go $5 bucks a week.

That way you have it aside, so when you do have the sufficient amount, you do not have to feel guilty about it.

It worked for me, and me and my Honey are happy. Though I did have to buy her a high end gift afterwards, lol.

    Doh !!!!!!

If you are an actual Gold subscriber ( 15$ a month ) like i were then the decision is very easy no matter how many months you have been paying.

The important thing to know is "Were you planning to stay subscribed for the next 12 months?".

If yes then 12 x 15$ = 180$ you will pay just in subscription cost.

Now if you do like i did and pay up front for the Lifetime sub, not only will your Gold sub pays itself in about 1 year but you also get immediate access to all the shinies that were maybe 100, 300 or 700 days away in the old Vet Reward system.

So, unless you are very very close to hit the 1000 days reward on Gold and unless you do not plan to maintain a Gold sub in the coming months, paying up front 200$ seem like an ok deal to me.

Now if STO gets shut down within the next 10 months then yes, i will take my lost and suck it up. But i am used to gambling and i am fine with that. LFT seemed like a good gamble to me and i bought it hoping to come out ahead after 13 months.

I started playing on a silver account and I'm really enjoying the game, if I bought the LTS would all the benefits be applied retrospectively on the characters I levelled while playing with silver status?

The main attraction for me would be the increased inventory/bank/boff slots and free respec tokens etc - I don't expect to get respec tokens for characters I already levelled, but the bank/inventory/boff slots would be the key selling point for me, and I don't really want to start over with characters that have spent a lot of time completing doff chains etc

yes, all your characters will benefit. But only the ones you level while subscribed or with a LTS will get the extra respec tokens while leveling.
You will get 2 or 3 regardless since some respec tokens are vet rewards.

We bought LTS in Feb 2011. My so got found a new hobby with DCS flight simulators while at the sametime I decided to give this game a try, and I am here since then.

Sure, there were a few moments of annoyances but then real life errands kept me busy.
So yeah, it is worth it for a long run.

I have been playing since April I believe, and have logged in over 600hrs if steam is correct. I have been a gold member for 3 months, purchased the sale price 3mo for $30, of which I have a month left.

I love the game, although it still needs work. I am especially focused on playing KDF.

At any rate I am a toy collector, so may sell a few things to buy an LTS, as I will most likely be playing this game for years to come. I just have to allocate the funds.

Going F2P wasn't an option as I have close to 20 characters, and F2P would make that very expensive indeed.I live in Europe, and we get slapped with all kinds of added taxes that would make the LTS (again) really expensive.
