I very rarely find my way over to this side of the forums. But I need advice on a ship build for PvP.
I'm a long time fan of PvP in most to all other games I play, however I really only dabbled in PvP in this game since launch.
I'm getting the PvP itch again, but rather than going back to another game to PvP I wanted to try and make a viable build in this game to have fun and be able to compete.
No one in my fleet really is interested in PvP, it is mostly a RP/PvE fleet, so I have to go in as a lone wolf pretty much.
So a little about myself...
My main is a Human Tac. Lifetime subscriber since pre-launch.
He has every ship in the game more or less. Every regular RA-VA ship, every c-store (zen, whatever) ship, every Lockbox and Lobi ship, a Fleet Escort retrofit, a Fleet Starcruiser, A Fleet DSSV, and a Fleet Nova.
I'm a bit of a ship collector lol. I think around 24 ships or so in total. Therein lies the problem however, because on my main, I really cannot decide on which ship I want to use. And I switch quite frequently. For PvP I would imagine I need to focus on one ship to build up and become efficient at it.
I have 13 other alts, between KDF and Fed, all at end game. I'm not against using a different toon (class) for PvP if necessary but I would prefer my main just because I have the resources and space there (plus all mark 12 gear on space and ground, purple doffs, etc. and I'd prefer not having to grind up another toon if I didn't have to).
I originally made a tac captain in the beginning with the silly notion that Tacs can(or were) the tanking class. In other MMOs, I usually play either a tank or some other form of support (second as crowd control, third as healer, hardly ever dps). I enjoy being the biggest threat on the battlefield. I also feel way more confident on ground than in space as far as knowing what my toon can do.
Ok, with that out of the way, I guess I have a few questions...
Because PvE is pretty much a joke, it allows me to fit any role in any ship I choose at any given moment. I know PvP is a different story all together and given the variety of ships that I have, I was wondering what you guys thought would be the best fit as far as ship and build?
Can a Tac captain fill a support role in PvP (like a tank or heal boat or crowd control)?
Thanks in advance, if I think of any other questions I will ask.
if you have been around that long and never pvp'ed, i don't know how the game held your interest honestly. theres a very high likelihood that all that pve game play has taught you how to play incorrectly, you will likely have to unlearn a lot of it, pvp will challenge you in ways pve never could.
goog pvp characters have at least the accurate and elusive trait, they arent required but they are helpful. theres 2 threads to look at here for getting started with good general info and build advice, i would start there, build up some characters in some ships, and then ask more specific questions
I would also avoid FvK. Unless you like being drained to death with siphon drones. Some may suggest CnH, but you really should practice in arena. Like Damian said, join OPvP for more help. If your current tac has ground traits might be a good idea to build a new one for space pvp.
Sadly, I am reducing my play time towards the end of OCT. There are a few good vets left that will help you! You will be blown up. It will sting, but the more stings you get the more you build up a tolerance to it (unless you get killed by cheese. At this point it has caused me to be lactose intolerant).
Sorry for the bitter overtones. PvPing since beta and I have not seen any real content or commitment on cryptic part to support PvP has had its toll. Enough of me, have fun meet some new and great people.
The only space trait my tac has is techie and the innate human one (either leadership or teamwork, I forget).
Maybe it is better to just start fresh with PvP in mind.
Would you guys suggest going Fed or KDF if I roll a new toon?
@dontdrunkimshoot, I'm the fleet leader so I didn't really have a choice but to stay interested and find ways to stay there lol. But you are right, I get a rush from PvP that PvE could never provide.
Maybe I will go through my alts and see if any are built better for PvP trait wise.
I will join the PvP channel and try to come up with more specific questions.

Joining Opvp is always good, if you post in there i m sure you ll get an invite quickly.
"Sad Panda Cubs" is another good resource in game.
As for tac healer's ...don't. There are viable builds, but I wouldn't start out with them. Sci BOPs are incredible fun, although the weak BOP stats won't keep them very viable in proper pre-made settings. HOwever, serious pvp is almost dead anyway so don't let that discourage you.
tons to say, it will be hard to get info with that broad of communication.
short answer: yes, tacs CAN do healing and CC, they just are not as good at it as scis and engies
other than that, pick space traits when rolling a pvp toon.

this is the main difference between FED and KDF sides. On the FED side they use doctors and nurses, on the KDF side, they use vets!
Thanks for the advice guys. I joined OPvP and chatted a bit there and with the Sad Panda Cubs. Then I started to to work. I got stomped of course, but I PvPed for hours.
The biggest obstacle I'm still having is finding the right ship. I stuck with a particular ship for a few matches at a time, but I still switched a lot. One important thing is I realized I'm not as good as an escort pilot as I thought. Even in my bug, I've only survived long enough to do laughable damage. As far as escorts, I tried my jemmie, my HEC, and my mobius destroyer. I noticed my biggest problem is moving fast and keeping targets in my arc. Once I slow down to try and focus my fire, I'm dead.
I tried criusers, my Fleet star cruiser, and my assualt cruiser refit, and the moral of that story was I was the first to be targeted and the first to go down. I did manage to heal some with extend shields and Aux to structural 3, but again didn't last too long to make a difference.
I think I had the best luck with my wells and crowd control. I was able to shield tank longer than I could tank with a cruiser, and I probably survived longer in this ship. I was wondering if it was worth building a Tac/sci vessel cc build, maybe in a recon or something?
Or as a tac, should I just stick with escorts and practice getting better with them?
