Advice and suggestions for my Lvl 50 Tac Officer...

jamesdaxjamesdax Member Posts: 159 Arc User
Hello, I'm fairly new at this game and have only been playing a few months. Since I'm free to play I only have the one Fed Officer and I'm playing him on 3 different ships. He's a tactical officer so naturally his primary ship is an escort. I also have a cruiser and a science ship. My question then is how best to setup my skills to make him efficient on all three ships. Currently he is setup up for escorts only.

If it helps the 3 ships I'm using now are:

Heavy Escort Carrier - All cannons

Mirror Assault Cruiser - All beams

Recon Science Vessel - 2x torpedo & DB fore/3x turrets aft.

Any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You'll not be great on all three ships at once, because of limitations in skillpoint setups.

It's possible to setup for both an Escort and a Cruiser (except for Tanking: you want Threat Control on a Cruiser, but it's usually counterproductive on an Escort) but Science ships are another story. At a minimum, you'll likely want "Particle Generators" on a Sci to increase Damage from the likes of Gravity Well and PSW - this will be wasted on a Cruiser or Escort.

A build like this one is probably as close as you're going to get to a workable setup for all three ships - but bear in mind that without "Threat Control" you won't be tanking on the Cruiser, so expect a few annoyed teammates at endgame.

If you are wanting to Tank as a Tac Captain in a cruiser.... pick up Torp Spread 2 or 3 and Beam Fire at Will 2 or 3.... fire them at the same time if possible... this usually brings a lot of aggro your way even though your Threat Control is lower due to you normally flying escorts.

I tank Dreadnoughts and Cubes all the time in my Ody as a Tac Captain.

    thx

hey I was wondering on your escort how can you get your cannons to stay in continuous rapid fire if it is even possible if so what types are you using. I saw a bird of prey and his rapid fire was never ending. I currently have duel heavy canons

Considering my experience with it, Beam Fire at Will might be better named Beam Agro at Will.

Take two copies of Cannon Rapid Fire, and run them back-to-back.
Or use DOFFs, or Aux2Bat to reduce the cooldown on a single copy of CRF.

Regarding aggro, it's possible for a Cruiser to hold the attention of foe(s) being fired on by other ships without any investment into Threat Control. But only if the threat level of those other ships is lower than that of the Cruiser.

"Threat level" is calculated by taking the damage you personally inflict and raising it by whatever investment you have into "Threat Control". A competent Escort will virtually always outdamage a competent Cruiser, so Tanking Cruisers need to invest into Threat Control in order to make up the difference in Threat Level between them and teammates with higher-damage-output.

Being able to hold aggro over high-damage teammates is one half of what makes someone a tank - being survivable enough to cope with having the enemy's full attention focussed on them is the other half... :)
