better to craft a weapon or to buy it for dil directly?

darshie101darshie101 Member Posts: 70 Arc User
I am not sure which one is more convenient (dil wise of course).

I have enough dil to buy a nice new weapon for my carrier; but I also have a ton of crafting samples, so I was not sure if is worth to craft something or just buy it and sell the samples on the exchange.

Crafting purple weapons require non replicable material that cost dil; so no matter what; you still need dil....but in the end is worth to spend dil and craft the weapon when you can get the same one at ESD for 20K dil or so?

I would like to hear some feedback; I haven't crafted a lot, just when I have a full stack of samples, so I am not sure if is even worth to spend time crafting, to get better weapons.

the game has many nice sets for the ships, but can't understand why don't they make also sets of weapons...at least you know that you gotta grind to get the super final weapon that is available in game (like you do with the sets), and avoid to waste time buying them :)

Thanks

Just do a few quick sums (i used excel spreadsheet to make it look pretty ^^)

Find a recipe for the weapon you are after,
    uncommon materials = X1000 dilithium
    Common materials = X10 Dilithium
(thats from memory and might be wrong)

When i was looking for the Science console that boosts overall shield capacity it worked out cheaper to craft the thing rather than buy with dilithium.

The crafted variant was about 8-9k dilithium while the d-store was 11k ish
[Combat (Self)] Your Bite deals 2378 (1475) Physical Damage(Critical) to Spawnmother.

I also have little experience with crafting but here goes:

If you are going to craft a purple quality weapon you first have to raise your crafting skill buy making generic junk at the crafting site (to raise your reserch skill??).

So this takes time and resources of data samples, particles, technical schematics...so i kinda gave up and just started purchasing weapons as its quicker to do.

What weapons are you buying as i never spent Dilithium on guns, i always bought them for EC on the exchange as I always felt Dilithium was more important to stock up on and trade for Zen.

    Thanks for the hint Elandarsky

Indeed looking at the numbers it seems that crafting saves you that day or 2 worth of grinding dil :)

So far the specs of the ship weapons seems the same, so I guess that crafting is the way to go (unless there is another place were to get good end game weapons)

you can get End game weapons as follows:
Look on the exchange at ESD (next to the bank) for mk xi purples, or do space elite missions like Cure/Infected/Khit and look out for random drops of prototype borg salvage.
This can be turned in at DS9 vendor for MK XII anti borg weapons.

All my ships run MK XII borg

proto salvage can be rare to drop, i think I went a month without seeing any and 4 months down the line I have 27 spare now!

Indeed I have reach the amount of skill points to craft purple items; that's why I was considering either crafting or buying...it didn't take that long at all for me....was fun to make purple stuff for lower tiers to sell on the exchange, but then I realized that if I just sell for credits it is just a waste of time in the end (especially because all the ships can be purchased only with dil or zen), so I considered the idea of getting some useful weapons for my ship :)

I just wish that we had 1 single currency and the special sets would come with special drop from STF....anyway the horse has been beaten for years, so better just avoid to beat it more :)

are you playing STF ***Elite*** missions as the proto salvage drops give you mk xii anti borg weapons that are better than whats on the dilithium store...

I basically went from weapons purchased for EC on the exchange, directly to mk xii by grinding STF Elites

richardandrews: That's a good advice....I have a lot of borg chips and salvage from the STF that I run; I didn't realized that these weapons are even better than the ones that you purchase or craft :)

At this point I will just sell the crafting stuff that I have and do STF...it is fun and quick!

Hippiejon: Agree.....selling crafting material will give me enough credits to buy what I need at outrageous prices on the exchange :)

STF Elites drop Proto Salvage that you turn into vendors for mk xii weapons/consoles.

If you get rare salvage then you can still turn that in for mk xi weapons

Encrypted data chips get you mk xi as well

    Much better than spending Dilithium....
Also once you get all the sets you want of weapons/consoles/tech you can turn in those edc/proto/rare borg drops for dilithium (or recycle into Energy creds)

Got it....But to get the proto salvage you gotta run the STF at Elite level; which is quite hard.

I shall start to get set up to start to play them at elite level :)

If your having difficulty with STF Elites then use up your EDC and rare drops collected on normal STFs to buy mk xi weapons/consoles/engine/shield/deflector gear at the DS9 Vendor (room next to the ship selector).
Also its worth picking up a borg engine with that EDC as it boosts your engine power levels.

I would also suggest looking for a friendly fleet who can help you setup your ship and assist you with the stfs. Once you know the best attack plans stf elites get crazy easy.

BTW you havnt said what ship your running or what level you are.

Nice, I will do that then; of course the gear would not cover for a group that lack skills :)

Sorry; I run a vulcan sci (VA) on a Caitian Carrier

True public players normally suck, thats the time you want to get into a fleet so everyone knows how to play.

Or via the in game chat join a channel called ""EliteSTF" as they are a group setup to create STF Elite teams who know how to play.

But yeah the crux of it is save your DI for fighter pets/zen/doff promotions.
Spend your EDC and rare drops on mk xi items, get in a fleet or into the EliteSTF group and keep running those STFs till you have enough proto salvage to equip your ship with end game items

Just to clarify: You can use Proto Salvage for Weapons,Shields,Engines and Deflectors but not consoles. As far as I'm aware you can get consoles only as drops, crafting, dil store and some of the older Fleet Actions (Very Rare MK XI consoles) and doff missions (for MK XII consoles).

if its consoles your going for, the duty officers required to craft mk xii purples are hard to find in doff missions or silly expensive on the exchange.
And there is a random chance that the console you create from these expensive doffs comes out as a ****ty green.

Im currently saving my energy creds to buy all purple mk xii consoles from the exchange.
Until then im running mostly mk xi rare consoles.

    I don't 100% agree.
The requirements for a MKXII conosle are:
    Resolve Doff
    Puprle console traits:
    Cunning,Stubborn (don't remember the other 2)
    Blue Console traits:
    Engineering

If you're aiming for the MKXII console you can get off easy cuz all you need is a random blue/purple doff with resolve and one or 2 purple traits.
(I got quite a few thanks to the GQ Doff pack + 10 Loby/Bughship promotion)

This will only increase your Purple chance so that you will have something like 50% fail chance, 26-27% blue chance and 23-24 purple chance.
So about 1/4 consoles will be purple. Plus every once in a while you will hit a Polaron/Antiproton/Phaser console which is worth a fortune in the exchange.

i have 4 blue offs with resolve and 1 trait (but none are engy) and no purples with resolve+efficient or stubbord or cunning.
on the exchange a purple doff with resolve + 1 of the traits needed is 28,000,000 ec.

So I am kinda priced out at the moment..i may wait and gather ec for a few more months before i consider trying the crafting mk xii purple route

The Aegis set costs around 12 uncommon and 15 common per part. (I think because I'm not logged in) so each part would cost you around 12,150 in dilithium.

Of course this set can't be purchased form the vendors*

my advice is to buy weapons from the exchange...some are actually cheap if you are not going for mk XII (which aren't craftable or buyable from NPC's anyway)
or do STFs...or join a fleet that has access to advanced fleet weapons both ground and space (space are not the best weapons actually but before you buy or craft mk XI for dilithium they would be the far better choice)

some mk XI rare consoles are cheaper if you craft them.

use your crafting mats for doff missions which can be found on your ship on the engineering deck. 500 dilithium and more for each assignment.
    Go pro or go home

Guess it depends on a definition of outrageous. EC is so easy to make in this game, it's silly. Might as well spend it on cool stuff. That's my feeling anyway.

You can also buy the full Aegis Set on the exchange for about a million (give or take) per piece. But the Aegis isn't really an Endgame set. It does look cool though.
